Prince's white Cloud guitar auctioned!?

Bizarre thing happened last night.

I was in Jazz After Dark (well known hang out of Amy Winehouse, etc)
and there was a charity auction going on.

The first item was Prince's white Cloud guitar!!
Supposedly the one used in Purple Rain.
The story was that Prince gave it, at some point, to the bar owner Sam.

There were only about 30 people in the tiny back room, only 2 people bidding, and it sold for £3000.

The bar was too busy to find out the whole story, but next time I'm there I'll ask Sam.

Does anyone know if this can really be Prince's guitar? Was it a replica?

it could have been a replica. there were four original clouds named north, east, west, south, there may have been others. i know a fan has "west" which was blue (presumably the blue angel, but he did respray the guitars). a black one was given away in an mtv competition. i would doubt he would give away the white one from purple rain, but you never know with prince

there were knut koupee copies made for about $5000 in the early 90s, made by the same luthier that made the original, and then there were the cheap crappy copies by schecter for either $1000 or $1500 for the single peice

Yea, at one time there were many replicas selling for that amount or more on ebay. I highly doubt that was the original from Purple Rain.

Q: How many guitars does Prince have?
A: Here's the full list of guitars he's been seen with as compiled by the members of prince.org.

Clouds:
*White Cloud – Purple Rain era – Destroyed at the last Revolution gig. Features ‘spade’ symbol fret markers.
*Black Cloud #1 – Parade era – This guitar was the only one to have a natural finished maple fretboard (not painted). Later became the ‘Batman’ guitar (see below).
*Peach Cloud – Sign O’ The Times era – Given away as a prize and not seen since. This Cloud had small black dot markers.
*Blue Cloud – Lovesexy Era – Commonly known as the ‘Blue Angel’. Also featured small black dot markers.
*Black Cloud #2 – Batman era – All black with bat symbol fret markers.
*Yellow Cloud – Diamond and Pearls era.
Blue Cloud #2 – Rave era – This guitar has gold plated knobs rather than the black plastic ‘mini JB’ knobs found on earlier guitars. It also has a rounded profile to the body.
Love Symbol shaped guitars:

*White
*Black
*Yellow
*Gold
*Orange
*Purple
We've heard the clouds and symbol are often repainted so there may actually be less of them!

My side note: There was a Red Cloud guitar made for Prince to coincide with the Valentines Day release of The Most Beautiful Girl In The World CD. It had a candy paint job with gold prince fret markers. Prince backed out of the transaction and it was auctioned off on eBay by the customizer.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Yep. Just watched Purple Rain to check.
This wasn't THAT guitar.

The one they sold was white with gold knobs and gold symbols on the frets.
It looked quite new too, which made me skeptical.

It still may have come from Prince though...

Didn't Prince sell guitars on the NPGMC website for $1500.00? Depending on how many sold there could be quite a few circulating with false stories attached.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

There was a blue one for the love symbol album in 1992/3. The red cloud guitar would have been nice! That was the time he switched to the symbol guitar. I have a picture of him and the guitar....on his sleeve (he is extending his arm) it say's "beautiful".

He also distroyed the yellow guitar at the end of a performance....dang...what it the name of that concert.....

Those are just "mass" produced Schecters - same that were sold on NPGMC. How many were made is unknown. I have a blue Schecter Cloud. Gold hardware with symbol fret markers. Some later NPGMC Schecters had dot fret markers instead of symbols. All white Clouds produced by Schecter were painted pearlescent. I believe a real Knut Koupee Purple Rain era white Cloud would be gloss white with no pearl.

I've only played it a couple of times, but it's a very decent sounding guitar despite the cost-cutting on the electronics. The action is just right, the hardware is well finished and the feel is similar to a Paul Reed Smith or a Gibson SG with a skinny neck. It's 3/4 scale, so if someone was going to use it as their main guitar, it's small design might take some getting used to if they have large hands. The entire neck and fretboard are painted, so I don't want to chance messing it up.
