Good is not much of a rating though is it? Fantastic, genre defining, inspiring, challenging, anything other than just good.
My word would be "lacking".

Different people, different taste...For me PE is very very bad,I never listen to it,the only times I did I felt embarrassed to be a P fan. "Goodness will guide us if Love is inside us"

It's a very good album with moments of greatness here and there (title track, SHOE, Lion of Judah). To be overall great, it would need a bit more consistency, maybe one or two tracks more and a better last song imo.

I like every song on this CD but I felt it didnt work great as a Album,I know it sounds weird but thats how I feel. I remember loving 3121 so much, then a week b4 Planet Earth came out I heard it and was really dissapointed, but its grown on me. I hardly ever listen to the whole cd,i usually skip to songs. And it was definently the wrong cd to release after the superbowl. I do remember the song PFUNK or whatever its called and that one track is better than anything on the Planet Earth CD.

Lion of Judah? Seriously? It's odd what some people like. I personally find that track not only one of Prince's worst songs but also one of the weakest songs by anyone. How he found any value in it I struggle to comprehend. If there are only two types of music, good and bad, then this track falls into the latter. More harmony and melody in a Spice Girls record.

It's hard to believe he won the Grammy for Future Baby Mama. As someone else said, minus the two weak R&B tracks in the middle, it was a very good album.

FBM is actually not bad, but it just isn't what I would call memorable. His vocals were nice though. Kind of surprising it didn't get more airplay since it seems so safe (and contemporary R&B). Mr. Goodnight should be put in the Vault never to be heard again [Edited 9/20/09 16:53pm] "Old man's gotta be the old man. Fish has got to be the fish."

I purchased this CD while on vacation in Honolulu and rushed back to my hotel to listen to it. I'm sitting on the lanai and staring straight at Diamondhead when "Planet Earth" comes on and that first line "Imagine all of planet earth in the palm of your hand..." I truly felt chills looking and one of the most wondrous sights in nature and hearing those words simultaneously. It is one of his most haunting anthems and then guitar came on and I was totally rocked by it.
When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

Planet Earth was a huge relief for me after both 3121 and Musicology left me cold. I was starting to think "oh well, I have two decades of great music from him" - then this album dropped and I thought "thank God, he still has it."
How can any fan not enjoy this album??? The title track is so wonderfully meladramatic and pompous (in a good way). The guitar at the end is so rousing and emotional - this is epic stuff. You have The One U Wanna C which is quite possibly the all-out catchiest Prince song since Raspberry Beret. All The Midnites is like a cross between Starfish & Coffee and Sweet Baby. Resolution is fun and upbeat... There's more life in these songs than anything on Musicology and 3121. The only tracks I don't enjoy are Future Baby Mama and Mr Goodnite - which sound like Natasha Beddingfield R&B lite. [Edited 9/21/09 2:04am]

One of his best, it really grew on me. I didn't like it much at first, but it just gets better with every listening. The only grumble is all his Musicology onwards music sounds the same, and its time for something new. So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

Indeed, PE is quite a grower! I love it! I play it more than any of his albums this decade nowadays! "Just like the sun, the Rainbow Children rise."

I really like Musicology. Much more than Planet earth.
Somewhere here on earth is a classic track which I'm sure the youth of today will discover in 30 years times and think "hell how come I didn't know this song," ie it'll live on for future generations for sure. Future baby mama, liked this one a lot, didn't know he won an award for, so deservedly, it's a magic number. The one u wanna see is one of those simple catchy tunes that you just can't ignore coz it sounds like too much fun. I like it. I had Mr Goodnight on my ipod at first but took it off after after a few listens. It has a lovely beginning but the rappy part and the lyrics turn me off. "All around the world they call me Prince but you can call me Mr. Goodnight." I just don't like the line or the rap element. For those who love rock guitar, I suppose Planet Earth and Guitar are perfect for them. I was disappointed in the theme track. The beginnings are promising, the lyrics and piano but then it goes all weird and sounds like war to me. The image I conjure up of earth, is gentle, smooth & magical. That image is picked up later on again but I would have preferred the dramatic part to have sounded more emotional. Probably playing it on guitar it is emotional but as a listener I hear angry head banging noise. Earth to me is too perfect & clear cut for a mash of indistinguishable sounds. But then I'm not a rocker There's nothing wrong with All the midnites in the world, it's a pretty track but it doesn't say "put me on your ipod." Chelsea Rodgers I wouldn't mind hearing if I was out somewhere. Interesting musical parts but I wouldn't play it at home. It's a bit too busy for me. Lion of Judah holds no appeal for me unfortunately. I find the rhythm is too predictable. Resolution - Intro is beautiful. But after that, the music to me, doesn't fit the seriousness of lyrics. "The main problem of war is that nobody ever wins...the next generation grows up and learns how to do it all over again." The tune is rather "happy clappy" but the message is strong. I would have preferred it in a more dramatic music setting. The ending is nice though + the cd cover.. I really think this cd is great. I don'tunderstand why people think it's so bad. It may not be his best, but it surely isn't his worst. My favorite song is the title cut. It would have really been nice if he had a video for it.

it goes to proves he won the grammys for future baby mama ... so it has to be a good album.... cant understand why some of u disagree with it.... Winning a Grammy for a vocal performance of a single does not make it a good album. Doesn't even mean the single was in any good, just the vocal. 'Planet Earth' has been crap, each time I've listened to it. There is nothing on there that I WANT to hear. IF a song from the album doesn't turn up on shuffle, I'm never going to go looking for it. I think he gave it away for a reason. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

he coulda merged PE and MPLS together, got rid of a few of the weaker songs and it woulda been a great album....I woulda tossed (or perhaps even better made them 'B-sides')Future Baby Mama, Mr Goodnight, (There'll Never B) Another Like Me and U're Gonna C Me (i prefer the ONA version).... personally I think Prince's R&B style just doesn't do him any favours...generic and boring IMHO
but PE is definitely not all bad...
