Prince's influence on Justin Timberlake hey guys!
I just listened to one of Justin Timberlake's new song, and I can't help to notice how much this song sounds like something Prince would've done years ago. It sounds just like Prince's songs during the 80's, you really can see Prince's influence on JT. So I was wondering what do you guys feel? Do you see the resemblance with Prince? and also what do you think of the song in general? Peace Out ! http://www.youtube.com/wa...26dv1Z1fHE

Yeah Prince and MJ are obviously a big influence. John Blackwell played drums for him as well I believe.
if you've gotta pay for things that you've done wrong I've gotta big bill coming at the end of the day- Gil Scott Heron

JT is obviously influenced by a lot of R&B and soul artists, but more MJ than Prince I'd say.
With this track, I can see where you're going, but it quickly becomes generic, so I don't fully agree. With the dirty lyrics, well there's absolutely no flair - so completely unlike Prince. Just sounds like little boys trying to act grown up.

success don't have to come because of your talent
good marketing perhaps

yet, the FACT remains that Justin Timberlake is a successful recording artist. All this hating on him doesn't change that fact. Deal with it. You don't have to listen to him. Regardless, he is succesful, good marketing or not.

Justin was going for a Michael Jackson vibe on his first album with the Neptunes. He was going for a Prince vibe on the second release with Timbaland. Neither time was the effort subtle. I don't mind hearing his stuff at a party or when I'm at the club but it's not my cup of tea. When go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all up in the house but when log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

To me, there's a huge difference between being influenced by someone and blatantly trying to imitate them. No doubt, JT was influenced by Prince, but this song reeks of attempted imitation more than influence.
In Prince's "Kiss" for example, you can obviously hear a James Brown influence, but when I listen to the song, I don't get the impression Prince was in the studio trying to deliberately copy James' sound. In the opening chords of "Dreamer", however, he's obviously imitating Hendrix more than, say, being influenced. For the record, I've got no real beef with JT. He's at least talented in some respects. (I think having watched the piss-poor VMAs this weekend makes that more obvious to me.) I just think it would be great if he could develop his own sound instead of blatantly copying his idols. Prince was able to take elements of James Brown, Hendrix, Santana, etc., and meld them into what would eventually be known as the "Prince sound". It would be cool if JT could pool his MJ and Prince influences and create his own unique sound. At the same time, I must add that I do realize that's no easy feat. John Blackwell as well as Mike Scott were on Justin's FutureSex/LoveShow tour. JT fully admits Prince's influence on him. Even on his FutureSex/LoveSongs album, he chants "Sexy dancer....sexy dancer". There are other MAJOR Prince nods on that album. The song "Sexy Ladies" in the concert is full on The Time including keytars. I still love that album from him. Even a couple of songs I initially didn't like have totally grown on me.

You might not know how "KISS" came about. Blame David Z for any James Brown "impression" of JB. I don't hear any JB in "kiss" anyway.

There's definitely a JB influence in the guitar style (heavy on the "chicken grease"). There's a lot of that playing style in several of Prince's songs. Listen to JB's "Lickin' Stick" and Prince's "Kiss" back to back, and you'll hear what I mean. [Edited 9/17/09 3:56am] "I Was FINE Back in the Day!"

I must admit the absolute white-boy he is, I dig Justin...
Since Futuresex/lovesounds showed its pretty face, I've got quite into JT, I know he's not to everyones taste on here and agreeably an absolute protogee to the 80's greats, but to be honest FUTURESEX, I can listen to happily all the way through... I remember when someone posted UNTIL THE END OF TIME on housequake and really dug the LINN DRUM track on it, then sexyback, my love etc. Then there's the Futuresex/loveshow: hmmm Lovesexy'88 rings to mind.... and the end result is, it is just like watching a mix of Lovesexy '88 and Musicology 2004 rolled into one.. HECK HE'S DERIVATIVE BUT DERIVATIVE OF SOMETHING GOOD

From the opening tack on justin's timberlake futur love sex sounds i hear
a bad immitation of the controversy bass line. U know this is a prince inspired album like timberland/timberlake stated. At least 7 trax are inspired by prince and sings he is bringin sexy back. There's nothin sexy in his vocals. I could mention 100 in prince trax or more. those who say he is more inspired by michael jackson then prince r wrong cuz prince is more talented and 2 achive that for of talent he would never able 2 do if he lived a 1000 years in fact until the end of time. justin is overated like timberland. i get bored with their music after a few listens.

Prince is an influence on everyone that knows music in one way or another. It's the nature of what we grow up hearing. Everything we take into our spirit's...is an influence. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

We should as fans be happy that he's giving an interest in Prince so that new generations get the chance get to know Prince's music, cuz most of the new generations aren't familiar with Prince's music, they only listen to his music when someone like Justin namnes him. It's good that JT introduces Prince's music to younger people.

To be fair does anyone here actually think it still possible to create a NEW SOUND, i feel it has all been done. I'm not saying this coz I'm now getting older I just feel that there is no new way to go in music. I think this is why so many people here despair at Prince coz so many think he was the only one left who could. Of course he has nothing left to prove but people still hope Prince was able to take elements of James Brown, Hendrix, Santana, etc., and meld them into what would eventually be known as the "Prince sound". It would be cool if JT could pool his MJ and Prince influences and create his own unique sound. At the same time, I must add that I do realize that's no easy feat. It sounds like a cut that would be from Prince from way back in the 80's

there r a few tracks on JT cd that have a clear Prince feel. He duz not quite make the cut but got to give the guy credit for trying. This spat that got some attention brings me to a song JT did with Nelly F, and Timberland can't recall the name of the song but it was a huge hit for JT....and I had always thought it was a response to Princes remark. The song said something like "we missed u on the charts...blah blah...if u see us in the club go and walk the other way"..... In anycase I got the impression the two don't really get along... Prince was doing a concert and at the end, he said ''For those saying that they're bringing Sexyback, sexy never left!''. So, at the Golden Globes, Justin is a presenter and Prince wins the award. He doesn't come up, so Justin goes like 'I guess Prince couldn't be here today'' ...akward silence...the crowd sorta giggles, then he kneels down to the microphone and says ''I'll accept this on his behalf''. The crowd laughs! Well, they showed prince later on in the show, HE WAS THERE!
SO in the song 'give it to me' by timbaland, if you listen closely to Justin, he takes a dig at Prince in the song, here's what the lyrics are: Could you speak up and stop the mumbling I don't think you're getting clear. Sitting on the top it's hard to hear you from way up here. I saw you tryin to act cute on tv just let me clear the air. We missed you on the charts last week Damn that's right, you wasn't there. If sexy never left, then why's everybody on my shi it it? Don't hate on me just because you didn't come up with it. So if you see us in the club go on and walk the other way Cuz our run will never be over; not at least until we say

JT mos def look up to Prince. When my mom was playing the FutureSex/LoveSound album, a song named "Until The End of Time" came on I was like, "this sound like a Prince beat". At least he digs the right people & does his thang. U can cut off all my fins - But 2 your ways I will not bend
