As more and more of the work was being done in house, less tracks got out.
Some songs got out by demos/promos sent to other artists or execs Some songs got out by engineers who would dub tapes or take tests home to study/get opinions on by other engineers. The girlfriend/stripper scenario is one that is somewhat likely, but not enough to fill The Work. A lot was done in trading. If an engineer was working for an artist that Prince sent tracks to, they'd make a copy for themselves and hold it for trading withing their community of traders. Eventually, somebody would decide to sell to the bootleggers. Consider how many songs you see on The Work were songs that were offered to other artists. -=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-

He's who released some to us, wasn't necessarily the original source. There were a lot of middle men when P was with Warner Bros. and on the PP label, so if you're talking about that time period, there were many more sources. [Edited 9/8/09 12:42pm] | |
