I would've never thought I'd say this, but after yrs of being a fan- I think Prince in the 90's was a tad bit cooler ...

...than 80's Prince. Sure the songs were a lil less.."colorful/whimsical"...but lyrically & stylistically there was this underground cool 2 Prince's "dead" Era. He was just as daring, just in a different way.

I was gonna say the songs were less challenging, but i dont even think thats true.

i know some will agree and some wont
, but this is a complete 180 from when i first became a fan.

now that i've had years to listen to everything from 76 to now...i really think P post- D&P had an intirely different cool that may have even superseded the revolution era.

Actually, I agree with you. I think he was really definining his personhood in that time rather than being a collection of persons by album. He was evolving into a psychic vampire that more or less kept a singular focus. Too bad religion fucked it all up.

Yes, Religion fucked it all to hell. For the first time, Prince actually held back. I'm not talking about the whole duck thing, that can be a clever tongue in cheek. I'm talking about the whole approach to his body of work and this obsession that it was no longer good as it was, that it needed to be changed.

The whole idea of the O+> years was to create a new life/vision/career, outside Prince's. He was really doing something concrete then he started talking about re-recording the entire catalogue which at first sounded exicting but that included censorship. Prince bought into some guilt trip, that is clear. Someone at peace doesn't need to lie about the past. They face it, learn from it and move on from it.

well said. i dunno..i just get the feeling religious affiliation or not. all of that was inevitable with P. look at how he did the black album.

and even now, he isnt as "pure" as he'd like to let on. (i thought his penmanship for bria said alot)

he did kinda turn his back on the "new birth" of prince and all, but to be honest- even as cool as i think the music was, the bios make it seem like he was in a reaaaally bad place

i mean i see what you're saying in the end, i just think his desire for control overall got in the way of his creativity, religious fervor is only one example of it.

before i even read the comments to this thread, i'm gonna say it:

bow bow bow I FREAKIN LOOOOVE 90'S ERA PRINCE!!! bow bow bow

he was pissed off, he was out of his damn mind, he was cranking out so many projects he didn't even know what to do with them all, he had hair and makeup that even on a bad day made rupaul jealous, he had some seriously insane outfits and OH MY GOD, the music he made in the 90s was so challenging that TO THIS DAY people haven't caught up to it.

i'm NOT saying he wasn't guilty of a fair amount of crappy songs in the 90s, but when he was on fire, he was still able to burn down the block.

the man let his freak flag fly high in the 90s and i appreciate the hell out of it.

exclaim

Prince was totally underground as the psychic vampire. It was so thrilling that he kept appearing with his magic even though Warner Brothers was trying to baptize his ass in garlic juice. clapping

How God in a man's life could be anything but wonderful, I don't why people say those things.

Even though, "Emancipation," is later on, there is so much spiritual strength being given to us.

Although I agree with some of the lyrics from "Elixer," being indescreet, it doesn't change that GOD has been Prince's partner in his career. You also have to remember that when I say some things, they are biased as a jealous female would be loving Prince as a man. I'm woman enough to admit that first of all and secondly, Prince is having a mid-life crisis. cool

I'd have to agree with you.

At times in the 80's it seemed like he was trying to be an "act" using his mysterious nature (and sexuality) to his advantage--which I loved, don't get me wrong--but it did seem a little forced, or scripted at times.

In the 90's Prince--and prince --went haywire, in a good way. I felt his "emancipation" and he seemed more REAL and inventive--and strange(!). It was a good time. *sighs*

*the only exception would be his corny hip-hop attempts lol

honestly? i've come to appreciate those as well over the years..and i'm a hip hop enthusiast (and was at one point a traditionalist)

his strong and weak point (as far as hip hop was concerned) was that he was TOO prince for his own good lol

Blame Andrea! lol

but let's face it, Hip Hop is a blight on the black community. I know people like you, and I do too actually, have respect for hip hop as it was when it was born. Creative, constructive messages (although extremely blunt) and was a voice for the disaffected. I'm sure there are still some really great acts out there now but overall it's just been glorified in such horrifying and degrading ways teaching men to embrace the most debased parts of themselves.

disbelief

if we're going to call all of hip-hop "shit-hop" because of a few bad apples, then because of the sterling artistry of pioneering geniuses such as britney spears, lindsay lohan and brooke hogan, i feel strongly that we should refer to all pop music as "slop music".

not to mention, 2000s prince!
always evolving, never, ever boring.
but i don't think i can say i prefer one over another. he gets both softer and sharper as the years progress
