but let's face it, Hip Hop is a blight on the black community. I know people like you, and I do too actually, have respect for hip hop as it was when it was born. Creative, constructive messages (although extremely blunt) and was a voice for the disaffected. I'm sure there are still some really great acts out there now but overall it's just been glorified in such horrifying and degrading ways teaching men to embrace the most debased parts of themselves.

1993-1996 was just 
 90's Prince
I'm sorry I can't add much more. It seems like either most of it has been said or that words just can't describe how I feel about that era. I think he was the most honest during those years. Honest with the world, honest with his work, but mainly honest with himself - which affected his whole career (in a very positive way). Not just was his body of work amongst the very best during those years, his whole persona (including image, clothes, make-up, way of talking/expressing himself, ...) was just the way I want my Prince to be. Long live

I'm not talking about the whole duck thing, that can be a clever tongue in cheek. I'm talking about the whole approach to his body of work and this obsession that it was no longer good as it was, that it needed to be changed. The whole idea of the O+> years was to create a new life/vision/career, outside Prince's. He was really doing something concrete then he started talking about re-recording the entire catalogue which at first sounded exicting but that included censorship. Even though, "Emancipation," is later on, there is so much spiritual strength being given to us. Although I agree with some of the lyrics from "Elixer," being indescreet, it doesn't change that GOD has been Prince's partner in his career. You also have to remember that when I say some things, they are biased as a jealous female would be loving Prince as a man. I'm woman enough to admit that first of all and secondly, Prince is having a mid-life crisis.  God has nothing to do with religion, and it's religion he's using as an excuse to hold back. Can't say I'm capable of judging Prince in the 90's as a whole. I liked the beginning of the 90's and the Gold tour. But I really didnt like those shows from 93 and 98 (aftershows were good though). Absolute hightlight of the 90's for me are TGE and the Gold tour. --- Where am I? ---

There was a lot of crap during the 90s such as we hadn't ever seen from Prince. I think it's the period of time when he ceased to be the critics darling.
But it gave us , The Gold Experience, Emancipation, The Truth, and Crystal Ball.
That's more music than many bands release in their careers before splitting up. And that's just the music I liked . If you count the NPGC released material, it's a staggering output for someone who supposedly lost his muse. I also liked the notion that he really thought he was a different person, and that Prince was dead to him. I also loved that he chose a name that was a symbol which no other human being on earth had. I loved the fact the symbol couldn't be pronounced and that it caused so much confusion with interviewers and the media. There's no large scale musical act of his caliber that would dare do something so bold and idiotic--so rock n' roll. Of course he pussyass backfooted 7 years into the name change back to Prince only after threatening lawsuits against over a half dozen websites (I miss some of those sites). But for one hot minute, I was the fan of someone I thought had honestly lost his marbles but maintained his musical genius qualities.
The 90s Prince is unfocused and spontaneous. The current day Prince is calculated and reserved in comparison. [Edited 9/8/09 6:37am] | |

I think the 90's where is most complex years of creating
Prince is growing beautifully, like a lotus flower Sharp edges and colorful displayed I don't mind his religion. it's not mine. I just listen what the man has to tell us. He becomes mature in every way, another step into the future everytime he grows. Sometimes you need to step back to see what it all has become as one whole creation.
