Prince live....BETTER than EVER 2009

I’ve been listening 2 the Prince 2009 live performances from L.A., Montreux, and Monaco quite a bit the last few weeks. It’s seems as if Prince’s playing, vocals, arrangements and overall musicianship is as GOOD or BETTER than it ever has been. He even channeled Sugarfoot (Ohio players) last week on Joy in Repetition.

Is it even possible that Prince is getting better at the age of 51? Can a musician be a steroids?

If steroids = musical maturity, then yes I'll agree.

I think he needs to play the guitar less. It has become endless solo's. Often several in a song. I love his solo's as much as the next man but its becoming cliche - the big 'bomb drop' plunges and liquid flurry of notes at the end of each track. Hop on the piano, hit the organ or strap on the bass. More guitar doesn't necessarily mean better.

Yeah, just some of that old spontaneity. GC, have you ever witnessed or know of a performance where Prince has done his guitar/piano line at the same time? I know he has done it on record (The Work pt1) and ive seen him do it on that old documentary from the early 90's during rehearsal footage. I've also heard Eric leeds discussing how in rehearsl he had witnessed prince play guitar with one hand and a piano line with the other whilst singing a harmony line eek Do you know of any other performances?

Yeah, I agree Prince gets better and better live. One Night Alone is a good example of his continued progression. On that tour, his voice and playing seemed as if he was recording a live album every night.

I guess it's maturity, experience and depth.

man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

Not that I don’t love him as a guitarist, but I think you have a point.

More recently, well ever since ONA, I think it has become a crutch (not a bad one to have one!) to counter that he can’t perform as dynamically in a physical capacity (e.g. dancing) like he once could. It’s now his ‘star’ moment type thing!

Did someone say he should STOP his solo's? Are you high? They've been killer. He needs to KEEP doing them! His recent performances have reminded me of the One Night Alone shows when it was all about the music and not about the production. People need to hear how brilliant a musician he really is.

Pop life there are some orgers
who would be the happiest if Prince stop
playing and
starts dancing during the whole show and if he does
moonwalk some fans would piss in their pants.
Prince is not about that, check the other guy
for
those kind of stuff

Prince's guitar playing is the highlight to his
shows and in recent times he stopped holding back and really
is cuttin' loose on guitar
which is great.
for two decades he was most famous for his singing
and dancing, let His Royal Badness be a guitar god
there is a lot of us fans who actually enjoy it.

Both songs on the www.Lotusflow3r.com website are incredible. I love the way he changes LRC and the "slow down" part is genius. When I Lay My Hands on you is simply perfect.

he's only been a guitar god for 4 years mainstream, and it was very timely cus there aint no more splits left in him. i would like to see more piano stuff but he never moved me as a live bassist.

Musicology Tour, o2. I saw sooo much dancing.

I don't want him to keep dancing all the way through but, i would like him to begin moving when he does a more uptempo track like that DMSR performance and then maybe jam on the piano midway. Its better then just straddling a guitar for the whole show.
