Sinead O'Conor's manager was Steve Fargnoli, who was also prince's manager with Cavallo and Ruffalo. So Steve most probs knew about most of the songs that Prince had recorded. This is just speculation on my part now. Due to the bad feeling of the split between Prince and Cavallo, Ruffalo & Fargnoli. Steve thought that Sinead could do better with this song due to Warner Bros and Prince having difficulties over Paisley Park and the funding of. This most probs annoyed Prince and meeting Sinead and to quote He invited me to his house in Los Angeles and started to give out to me for swearing in interviews. When I told him to go f**k himself he got very upset and became quite threatening, physically. I ended up having to escape. He can pack a punch. A few blows were exchanged. All I could do was spit. I spat on him quite a bit." end quote so it looks more like out of frustration more than anything else that Prince blow his top at her. and there you have my 2 pennies worth. Sinead claims that Prince was jealous of the success that she was having with the song.Remember, this incident took place in late 1990,around the time when Prince's 'Graffiti Bridge' movie had flopped. He probably wasn't in the best mood, lol. Was he pissed that someone else was having a hit with one of his old songs, while his own new singles weren't doing very well? His problem is that I did a song of his ("Nothing Compares 2 U") without him being involved. He's jealous. And he did say to me that he wishes that I had never done his song.I think that, frankly, that song saved his fucking ass.He was in serious financial trouble until that song happened.

Here's the 1991 article in which O' Connor made those accusations (click to enlarge) Apparently,Prince invited her to his home, then the two of them got into a nasty argument.

Prince would never hit a woman...who's name doesn't rhyme with ppolonia. And by the way Catholics rule! Damon Dickson: Is it hair, a hat, or a dead cat?

Saying "Nothing Compares..." was the reason for all her problems? What a jackass. I remember when Sinatra said he'd punch her in the face -or something like that- if he ever met her. I hope she got some help.
She was protesting the sexual abuse going on Catholic churches. She ripped the Pope's picture because he wasn't doing or saying anything about it. and i personanlly think her version of Nothing Compares is superior Ripping up the photo of the Pope on live tv doesn't address the issue in any way, including all the good the Catholic Church does too. Did she stand against that also? Of course, not. And I agree, I like Sinead's version of NC2U better...but, when she accepted an award that same year, she regretted ever recording it, saying it was the source of all her problems. No, she was the source of all her problems. Like I said, I hope she got some help. but how could she cover the song without his consent. You only need consent if the song has never been previously released. Once a version has been released, anyone can do a cover of it without obtaining consent, Unless of course they plan to change lyrics, or abuse the writers moral rights. I.e.If someone wanted to use the song in a (for example) toilet paper commercial, this cpuld be considered to be derogatory to the writers moral rights and consent should be sought. So as the Family's version was already released, Sinead was free to do a cover version.

'compulsory license' can get confusing fast. You can cover a "let's go crazy" and put it on your album but getting it on the radio or TV might need permission. And you can not use it for an Advertisement or even a song that is CLOSE to a song. (Remember Bruce Springsteen sued over a sound alike add for a pickup truck). Also I suspect that some record companies have unspoken agreements to limit covers of some artists with out permission. "Keep on shilling for Big Pharm!"

If you spit in my face; I would threaten to slap the S***T out of you too. Normal human reaction not to mention a nasty, shallow, and demeaning thing to do. Prince's Sarah
