If you buy ONA Live in the stores, please, buy it at your small neighborhood wrekastow, NOT Best Buy...!

All this talk of "I'm getting it at Best Buy this, Wal Mart that", I mean c'mooon!

The whole Prince/NPGMC spirit surrounding ONA Live is that it's coming from an independant, small company type source. No BIG record companies, no BIG marketing etc.

So why not continue it's karma and buy it from your local small...wrekastow?!

They need the holiday business.

Why give your cash to some bulti-billion soul-less joint where all the sheep go? Why!?

I'm a club member but if I were to buy it retail, it'd be fresh from Rockaway (SilverLake Los Angeles), maybe even Arons on Highland, or what about PennyLane?! Bleeker Bobs (hey are they still around?)!

That's the way I bought Sign "O" The Times! Not at Tower or The Warehouse, screw 'em! Screw Best Buy!!!

Buy from the little people!

Best Buy in NY didn't even have it today! Fortunately, JandR did, and it was 39 bucks!

The thing is, how many independent stores are gonna stock the set?

In England they usually get them, but a while after the major stores that deal in imports (HMV etc)
"London, i've adopted a name that has no pronounciation.... is that cool with you?"

"YEAH!!!"

"Yeah, well then fuck those other fools!"

buy it from whom ever you want.

If it was such an independant project, it should been a 'CLUB MEMBER ONLY' release.

I'll tell you why. Best Buy can buy in quantity, thus, they are able to sell it cheaper than the neighborhood "wrekastow." Why, then, would I pay more than I have to for it? Sounds foolish to me, unless you like wasting money. In that case, orgnote me and I'll give you my address.

Well, I spent my lunch hour here in Omaha looking for it and I didn't find it anywhere. I looked at all of the MPLS based retailers that where close. Best Buy didn't have it, line where really long here, Target didn't have it either but I wasn't suprised, I would have been suprised if they did have it. Tonight I am going to hit a local record store and see how I come out.

It is not foolish. It's the principle...yes I would buy it at a smaller store for a few more bucks and let them know that I appreciate them stocking and ordering it. Heck even maybe via eBay, but I like the small store EXPERIENCE. Much more personal, it assures the little people will be there later to provide me with the next Prince release, or rare records, promos, posters, albums, used CD's, etc. ANd you never know, I might find something extra like some super rare photos I found at Rockaway last time I strolled in!

Why I would pay a little more at a mom-and-pops? Because, personally, it's the experience of going to the store just like I did for Parade, Purple Rain, Graffiti Bridge, Sign"O"The Times, and going to that small little record store...then going home with it in the plain paper bag...you know the one, the flat crunchy record sized one...ahhh. Then popping that in with a cup of tea and my drums set up for when I can't stand the Funk anymore and have to join in!

Well, I'm an employee at Best Buy. Yes it is a multi-billion dollar franchise. But, Best Buy did very well helping Prince with TRC. We had a store meeting dedicated to TRC/Redline Ent. and Prince alone. In the end I think Best Buy did a heck of a good job of keeping TRC stocked advertised; with big posters and the music being played quite often (The Last Demsember). People would come up to me and ask,

"what's this you guys are playin on the radio?"

I'd reply, "it's Prince's new album, The Rainbow Children..."

Guess what, they'd go and buy the album after being impressed with the mellow beauty of The Last December...

I'll agree that you need to support small businesses. But, a lot of people have put out a lot of money this year for Prince and trying to save a few dollars also.

So supply=demand. Best Buy, Target whatever. Get the best band for your buck.

Prince is still gonna get his either way.

Sorry Flying Cloud, but if I buy the retail set, then I'd go with whoever has the lowest price.

IMHO.

Though it's not a bad idea to support a small local shop if you like the diversity of music they have on sale. Not that you should pay $20 more for it just to support them, but it's nice to keep them in business by getting some of your music at a store like that even if it costs the same or a buck or two more.

At least that's the way I see it.

Good point, Blue. I love "Justin's" in the hood...they do stock most Prince music, but I don't think they'll play it. They seem to cater more to the Hip Hop audience. I only hope that they will play it and give Prince props. Much love to "Justin's" in Detroit.

It doesn't really matter, since Best Buy doesn't even have the friggin' thing. All the ones I've been to have said that they won't be stocking it until December 31st. I'll be buying it from the first place I kind find the fucking thing!

To origmnd: No piano CD. Has anybody bought a retail copy that included the piano CD? Seems weird that all the reviewers are mentioning it. Consumers are going to be feeling ripped off when they only find 3 CDs. Oh, and what's Bondy's?

Hey Nettie smile where's Justin's located? I tried Chantiniques (yeah right) and they said they're only ordering a few copies (literally). Puffer Reds in Ypsi (on Eastern Michigan University's campus) said that they planned to do the same. I'll probably just wait and use my discount at Best Buy.

Which Best Buy do you work at, Blue? My bro and I were at the Best Buy at around 13 Mile and Gratiot today.

In any case, I say buy it wherever it is cheapest.

I was at a small independant 'wrekastow' over here in
Holland this morning. I always prefer going to them
instead of buying at one of the big retail-chains.

The people are just much more friendly and for a change
they actually do know the music they sell.

If you buy a Miles release they can tell you everything
about it [even rant sometimes]. If you're interested in
obscure jazz they can tell you what would be the best
place to start etc etc.

For instance, this morning I went in to buy The Beatles
[white album] and the guy knows the album beginning to
end and can tell you all kinds of things about it and
some obscure facts about it etc etc.

Which is quite the breath of fresh air compared to say
FreeRecordStore where some spotty 18 year old is playing
euro trash dance records to impress his 'crew' and just
looks at you with an empty expression but for a vapid
meaningless stare in his eyes that says "Davis Who?"
"Thellellelonianthonyous What Monk What?" Is that like
a new remix project from Ibiza or something dude?

lol

What was I saying? Oh, right, I did see that this local
store had a few copies of the box set on display at the
counter. I didn't ask what it cost tho since I already
have my own copy from npgmc.

Fcuz, I called the big chain once I got home to ask if
they have it, and they didn't. Couldn't even tell me
when they'd get it. Duh.

Same thing with The Rainbow Children. The little store
already had it for days when the FreeRecordStore couldn't
even tell me more than "Yes, there is a new album on the
way. We don't know what it's called tho and we don't
know when we'll get it".

So I'm like "Well, it's called "The Rainbow Children", at
which they hit me with a disdainful look and chirped "No
I don't think so, there's no info about that in the pc".

You'd have better luck calling Mdm Zelda for a prospect
on future releases.

Another major letdown in the retail chains is that they
only stock a few albums out of an artists back catalogue.
For instance, FRC only has about 3 Beatles albums. Two
of them 'greatest hits' packages.

The local independant store has the ENTIRE back catalogue
and an additional host of bootlegs to go with it.

Same thing with the Jazz records, instead of the 2 cm
space for Jazz at most chainstores, the smaller ones over
here have at least 6 meters of jazz from all over the map
and not just the well known stuff, but everything from
the obscure to the biggest sellers.

That's the major difference. In the independant, small
stores there is still a lot of material present for you
to search your way through and to discover new things.

Whilst at most retail chains, history doesn't seem to
reach beyond about 4 or 5 years back.

sigh
