I know your COPY CAT ass isn't talking to me because that wouldn't make any sense now would it? Aaaaah come now player,....I WANT you to still be here so you can keep singing the words that I have written. With you around, my royalty rate is sky high. So thank you. Just a bit of advice, next time you sing the lyrics to my song, (whispers) try NOT to sing so off key. I understand that you're tone deaf and shit so your pitch is bad. I like you making me money by singing my words but damn dawg, at least try to sing it in key. Thanks. [Edited 8/7/09 13:23pm] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. But once "U.T.C.M" hit the theaters and got horrible reviews, it killed the "Parade" LP. I think by then Rick had "The Flag" LP (yawn). I don't even think there were any hits on that LP. If he had released his "Alice In Ghettoland" or "Slice Of Life" flicks in late 85/early 86, he probably would have eclipsed "U.T.C.M". R&B and hip hop flicks were doing pretty well back then. Rick could have cashed in. I think if Rick was able to had Alice In Ghettoland released when he had planned, (before PR) then that definately would have changed the impact that PR had. And that's IF Warners still would have wanted to back it seeing Rick's movie was out. P himself might not would have wanted to release PR if Alice In Ghettoland was out first. BUT Rick, for whatever reason, the film didn't get made or released, P's did and it blew the doors off. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Rick had himself = Prince. The Stone City Band = The Time. Teena = Appolonia. No doubt it was different scenerios that all the bands existed and Rick probably didn't have the mother/father discord that P had in his story. One of the elements that I felt made P's film as good as it was. Knowing P though, I could see him still wanting it out exactly like he did. He may have wanted to go head up with Rick. It all would have depended on just how well Rick's "Alice" would have done in the box office as well. To me, it's interesting that Rick and P had a few parallels between them during a certain time period. [Edited 8/7/09 14:16pm] SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. LOL!! Yeah P did style the black spandex pants with blouse type shirt in 79..but I saw Leif rock that first in 78.
. I think P also visually took from Marc Bolan (from T-Rex) too. The scarves, unisex shirts, boots, and pants that P wore in 79, Marc was wearing in 72. P also borrowed ideas from my boy Todd Rundgren. Todd also played a "symbol" like guitar in 73. I think those 2 cats (with Jagger and Bowie) inspired P's rock image.

I myself have stated many times about the influence of Marc Bolan on P. It's there musically as well. And not just P's song "Cream" which is a straight copy of T-Rex's "Bang A Gong". But yeah, it all filters down. Marc Bolan and Johnny Thunders from the New York Dolls heavily influenced Paul Stanley. Stanley and Johnny Thunders influenced Prince, along with Bowie and Jagger. No doubt. And P wasn't trying to hide that shit either. SynthiaRose said "I'm in love with blackguitaristz. Especially when he talks about Hendrix."

Giovanni777 said: In 1980, Prince opened for James on the Fire It Up tour. James complained that Prince stole his stage moves and according to Marie, Rick paid Prince back by stealing his gear. “Back then people weren’t really programming their own synthesizers,” says Teena. “Prince - you know – he’s a genius... he was one of the only one’s who could really do that – probably him and Stevie [Wonder] were the only one’s really doing it…[Prince] was programming all his synthesizers and setting the presets with his own sound and …at the end of the tour [Rick] took [Prince’s] synthesizers.” Teena cannot help but chuckle as she recounts the story. “He took them to Sausalito and he actually used them on the Street Songs album and then he sent them back to [Prince] with a thank you card. He was a piece of work…and a brilliant genius, too!”
Teena later found herself wedged between the two future legends when she went on the road with Prince. “We were on the Dirty Mind tour together… [Prince and I] never had a problem. We would kick it…neither one of us drank so after the concerts we’d go and sit and have our little orange juice or whatever. He had a lot of respect for me. There were some nights that I would come on stage and I would kick his butt, you know, and [afterwards] he’d walk by me and go “Whew! I have to work hard tonight’ and there were some nights that he would come by and say ‘I whooped you! I whooped you tonight!’ so it was really awesome and he’s always been really wonderful to me.” For James, however, it was a different story. “I don’t think Rick really liked the fact that [Prince and I] were friends but you know….The rivalry to me as I look back on it - it was really Rick. It wasn’t really Prince. It was more Rick than anything. I never really saw Prince feeding into it too much. It really actually saddened me because I think the two of them would have made some amazing music together. It would have been ridiculous…but you know…it was what it was…I’m not really sure why it started. Rick always said it was because Prince snubbed his mother.” Indeed, James claimed that Prince had insulted his mother at the 1982 American Music Awards by refusing to give her an autograph. The mood should have been celebratory - Teena was nominated for Favorite Soul R&B Female Artist and Rick won Best Soul/R&B Album for Street Songs - but Rick was having none of it. Backstage, Prince’s manager at the time (the late Steve Fargnoli) hastily arranged for Prince to apologize but James ignored him. Even today, Teena views the story skeptically. “I really find that hard to believe and if it did happen, I don’t think it was intentional because Prince just isn’t that kind of guy. So it could have just been unintentional where she was around and he didn’t see her, you know what I’m saying? And Rick really knew how to take stuff and run with it…but from everything that I know [Rick] really, really did like [Prince’s] music….” Laughing, Teena adds one more caveat: “Although he would never admit to it. He would never admit to that.” One word: WOW. Thanks for posting this piece Gio. Teena's my girl. It's just nice to read someone be objective and truthful about what happened all those years ago without the overt snarky-ness and cryptic comments. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~

vainandy said: I wish I could find the very first thread I ever made on the org. It was over in the "Music: Non-Prince Section" and it was called "Prince vs. Rick James". In the thread, I started with 1978 and went up to around 1986 breaking it down album per album, year per year for each artist and comparing them against each other as far as their content, style, and success. It was probably the best thread I ever made. Anyway, in that thread, when I made it up to 1982, I said that "Throwin' Down" and "1999" were about neck and neck until white people discovered "Little Red Corvette" and I also said that in 1984, when Prince released "Purple Rain", the album and the movie, the tables totally turned away from Rick then and it was like Prince buried him in a hole where he was rarely heard from again. My favorite part of the thread though, was when I started talking about the very first time both artists started slipping. It was the exact same year, in 1985. Rick released his first bullshit album, "Glow", and Prince released his first bullshit album, "Around The World In A Day". When those fams from the Prince section got wind of that statement, they entered that thread like gangbusters. I said in that thread, and I still believe it's true today, that if Rick really wanted to beat Prince's ass and kick him when he was down, he would have released a strong classic Rick James album with the Stone City Band sound in 1986 after "Glow" wasn't hitting on shit. Prince had already pissed people off with "Around The World In A Day" and then pissed them off even more with "Parade" in 1986. If Rick had not gotten so far out on drugs and had not let them get the best of him, he could have made a kickass album and absolutely ripped Prince to shreds that year. Prince may have been doing good over in Europe, but back here at home, and especially in the black clubs, people were saying Prince had totally lost it and were asking "Where the hell is Rick James, hell, fuck Prince". And this is what I dig the most about you Vain... your taste in music. I was DAMN! pissed about ATWIAD. In fact... that is when I really stopped buying Prince music. I was a teenager and didn't have a lot of money. I usually bought 45's. So for me to go buy AWTIAD without hearing the album... that was a real leap of faith. But hey, Prince was killing it on black radio with PR, 1999 coming out so close and so strong... not to mention the Time, Sheila E., V6/A6 and all those EP and B-sides. I thought buying his album would be a safe bet. WRONG! I never felt so burned before. That was a lot of money for me, and I only liked 1 or 2 songs. Really good link there, I believe it too, I just can not see Prince as the type of person who would disrespect someones mother. Programming synthesisers is what I can picture Prince doing. I think he was probably intimidated by the fact Rick James was quite fast and in to all those drugs and things. So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time
