sorry. didnt read this thread. Good luck trying to get royalties. I dont get charged by this kind of shit, honestly. And just so you know, this shit is virtual, make believe, U cant actually check someone or score cool points up here. Check my history, i'm sporadic at best, so what does that tell you?. You keep score, and you do get bent out of shape because i cant imagine asking a stranger what they'r smokin and some of the other crap i see up here. I swear on everything dear that if any of my post kinda matched yours it was merely by coincidence because i give this shit that little consideration. when i said truce i meant it, cus i dont keep up with this shit enough to battle the all mighty blackguitarguy serious LOL.Oh yeah, Rick asked for that asswhoopin Prince put on him, thats why it dont mean shit to him.

so it would seem huh?
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

emotion lol. not arguing, and no i swear i dont read so many threads that i have an encyclapedic ability to recall everything. I've relied on my own belief and understanding of the situation, and if we have the same narrative why go any further?. I could go into the shows i've seen and blah blah blah but the point is Rick thought it was a thing and Prince settled it in the only venues that matter-not Right On Magazine or a taudry book. And i like what i see in the mirror ("manpretty"LOL) and i'm sorry; i dont C strangers who get all bent out of shape on the prince.org forum. Truce?
[Edited 8/6/09 3:33am]

What are u talking about man? Nobody was talking about "so many threads". I was talking about ONE thread, the one that you obviously read besides this one. And you certainly don't have to explain what this topic is about to me. You're the one who needed explaining to. Right On magazine and a taudry book? What's THAT got to do with this? Stay on track, dawg. And why do u feel u need to go into the shows that you've seen? Just because I mentioned it? You've bitten off enough of what I 've already posted as it is so hell nah, form your own thoughts. Don't have a clue on who you're talking about getting bent out of shape. Because it certainly isn't me. When I call somebody on something, which in this case it would be you, it's just that. I'm TOO clear cut and TOO specific in the statements and posts that I make so it's not hard for anyone to comprehend where I'm coming from. I know imitation is the highest form of flattery but damn....I see that I'm going to have to set up my royalty rate and fees up in here though. For instance, if I charged 7 cents everytime somebody thought "Damn, didn't bgz just say that?", then you would owe me roughly $100 all by yourself on just THIS thread alone.
[Edited 8/6/09 5:16am]

I wish I could find the very first thread I ever made on the org. It was over in the "Music: Non-Prince Section" and it was called "Prince vs. Rick James". In the thread, I started with 1978 and went up to around 1986 breaking it down album per album, year per year for each artist and comparing them against each other as far as their content, style, and success. It was probably the best thread I ever made.

Anyway, in that thread, when I made it up to 1982, I said that "Throwin' Down" and "1999" were about neck and neck until white people discovered "Little Red Corvette" and I also said that in 1984, when Prince released "Purple Rain", the album and the movie, the tables totally turned away from Rick then and it was like Prince buried him in a hole where he was rarely heard from again.

My favorite part of the thread though, was when I started talking about the very first time both artists started slipping. It was the exact same year, in 1985. Rick released his first bullshit album, "Glow", and Prince released his first bullshit album, "Around The World In A Day". When those fams from the Prince section got wind of that statement, they entered that thread like gangbusters. lol

I said in that thread, and I still believe it's true today, that if Rick really wanted to beat Prince's ass and kick him when he was down, he would have released a strong classic Rick James album with the Stone City Band sound in 1986 after "Glow" wasn't hitting on shit. Prince had already pissed people off with "Around The World In A Day" and then pissed them off even more with "Parade" in 1986. If Rick had not gotten so far out on drugs and had not let them get the best of him, he could have made a kickass album and absolutely ripped Prince to shreds that year. Prince may have been doing good over in Europe, but back here at home, and especially in the black clubs, people were saying Prince had totally lost it and were asking "Where the hell is Rick James, hell, fuck Prince". lol

You sound like a straight up broke record that's stuck on "Well....hmmmmphhh...Rick asked for it....Rick talked about Prince and he got beat up!" No shit, man. You are THAT slow, aren't u? You're HELLA late to the party. I established THAT a long ass time ago. But that's another $3.71 of airplay since you insist on continually singing a song that I wrote. Player, I have MANY witnesses so if you're attempting to not pay my royalties, the beautiful thing about all of this too is that it's all been documented. I always get my shit copyrighted so the plagerism on your part is all here in black and white. You don't need u to cop to it. The proof is in the pudding. Oh and for the record, you're calling the kettle black. Not wise to live in a glass house when you throw stones. Funny how earlier, you tried to knock Rick when the man was down about him being in prison but then you get your panties all knotted up when I ask a phrase like "Are u high?" which was hella suitable because of some of the wandering, lost comments u were making. Hell nah I'm not interested in any kind of a truce with you especially when u can't stop singing my song. You just keep adding to my royalty percentage. But keep singing the lyrics and the melody that I wrote because my publishing company LOVES this.

Yep, that's true. Well, u and I both feel the same way about ATWIAD. On a creative level, to me, it was on the 1999 album that not only P turned the corner completely on Rick but on damn near everybody else. But yeah, of course, with Purple Rain, P trumped all the players.

Nah L40, not from me. I'm the very one that's stating it's NOT a Rick vs P thing. I've been giving props to both cats all along. Now desinord and a few others have attempted to turn this into that but that's going that happen on here like on the other Fire It Up Tour thread. Now THAT'S a thread that was killin'. It had great pics, etc.

I agree with vainandy..The "Parade" singles seemed to go over well on R&B radio back then. "Kiss" was a huge hit and "AnotherLover" started to get a lot of airplay too. Some of my friends thought it was a new Stevie Wonder jam. Oh yes and "Mountains" got a lot of play too.

But once "U.T.C.M" hit the theaters and got horrible reviews, it killed the "Parade" LP. I think by then Rick had "The Flag" LP (yawn). I don't even think there were any hits on that LP.

If he had released his "Alice In Ghettoland" or "Slice Of Life" flicks in late 85/early 86, he probably would have eclipsed "U.T.C.M". R&B and hip hop flicks were doing pretty well back then. Rick could have cashed in.

THAT'S exactly what I've BEEN saying and what I've ALWAYS posted...It shouldn't be a "battle" in the first place. And it certainly has never been one in MY brain regarding Rick and P. I have always celebrated the triumphs of BOTH bruthas who accomplished a hell of a LOT. I have ALWAYS loved them both. I grew up on them, you know.. What it is Timmy? I see you saw what I was talking about. I'm going to clean up on my royalties on this thread alone!

You computer geeks dont know a damn thing. Rick James's bass player and horn section wears ruffles in the "Hard To Get" video in 1982. Purple Rain came out in 1984, Since you Prince guitar-suckers are so smart go on youtube and do the research yourselves. Matter of fact, notice what the KING OF FUNK is wearing in that video. My oh my, is that the King Of Rock attire? You bet.If you look at all the videos from the Throwin Down album this guy is pratically making a mockery of Elvis. Yeah, Rick was a drug user and yeah, Prince ended up being more sucessful in the long run. But if you ask any "brotha" from this thing we call life "who is the funk-god" they will tell you Rick James. PurPle Rain is a stupid movie with amazing performances from Prince as well as Morris Day. There was a reason Rick didnt outshine Prince and that was simply because of Jim Crow programming at MTV. Lets rewind the clock back to 1982 and if MTV plays those videos from THrowin Down Rick James easily quaduples his catolog sales instantly. Pot-smoking niggers always get crucified when they do there own thing. Try invisioning that in you purple minds. Once it sinks in its a pretty awesome thing dont you think? Please, Im a Prince fan who knows his material backwards and forwards from his 1978-1984 work. The "minneapolis sound" is basically watered down Rick James punk-funk with the syntheziers replacing the "punk-funk" horns. Morris Day "zoot suit" in 1984 is Rick James "Coldblooded" attire with Day's own twist added. All his mannerisms in that movie look like Rick James on 1980 Soul Train. Wow, Im good. Youtube got all the proof. I know alot of Prince fans gonna hate me but for all the civil-minded people who need a good research project for the day. Youtube is one click away.Put the puzzle together and you get the greatest music consipiracy ever.Even if it was Rick's own fault. And to the guy who said Rick was just funk/rnb, youre smoking some of that crack Rick used to smoke because he was Mr. Funk-Rock. Good Evening Bitches

Man,... you ain't hardly schooling anybody. Least of all me. I already stated long time ago on several other threads that P bit off of Rick. If you want to try to hang on to the ruffles, and what some band member in Rick's band wore, whatever. You can have that. Truth be told, BOTH Rick and P wouldn't have ever considered wearing ANYTHING with ruffles if it weren't for Hendrix so fuck all of the other shit. I NEVER stated that Rick or P owned the keys to wearing ruffles. Hell, when I was 15, as many on here know by now, I wore ruffles and a headband to the Purple Rain Premier in 84. In my mind, I was of course evoking Hendrix FIRST. BUT to everybody else who saw me there more than likely thought I was either copying Dez or Prince. But the credit for the flashy brutha in music all goes to Little Richard for without him, Jimi may not had felt as "free to wave his freak flag high" so to speak. And Jimi pretty much admitted to this as true. Richard himself stated that he "gave Jimi confidence and recompense of reward. My Lord."! biggrin Richard be rhyming his ass off. But as far as Rick's importance, THAT goes without saying. Rick was The Man in 81/82 and he did all of this WITHOUT racist ass MTV. Who initially was NOT going to even play Michael Jackson. So yeah man, many on here KNOW the history. BUT Rick DID bite off of P's look and vibe on the Wonderful album cover. But don't trip...Rick had no shame in his game. He certainly KNEW what the fuck he was doing. No one put a pistol up side Rick's skull making him do that shit. He WANTED to do it. He probably felt justified in that shit being that P had bit from him in 80-83.
As a kid, the first time I noticed P was "borrowing" from Rick was from Rick's album "Bustin' Out of L7" with the spray painted writting on the walls that P ended up using on Dirty Mind. Now P could have also taken that from the film The Warriors, which he also borrowed from in a few scenes for the film Purple Rain. Hell, Rick even could have gotten that from The Warriors. Like he got the animated artwork vibe for his Bustin Out of L7 album cover from KISS and the album "Destroyer". Even Rick's pose is identical to Gene Simmons pose on "Destroyer". When all of ya'll are bored, go get both albums and put them side to side and tell 'em that your boy bgz told ya so. wink Also with the two girls on each side of Rick on that album, that also echoes KISS's Love Gun album with the women at their feet. Ya'll know that Rick also had a song also titled "Love Gun". This wouldn't be the last time Rick paid homage to Gene and KISS. On Rick's "Throwin Down" album, he has Gene's bass guitar up there with him on the stairs. Just a little side info....It was no secret that Rick LOVED KISS for he has said in different interviews that he wanted his live shows with the fireworks and the smoke to look like a KISS concert. He said he wanted to bring that to the black kids and make it like the 4th of July. cool

And I thought I was the only one to notice the similarities between Rick and Kiss!Prince was also influenced by Kiss live shows as evident in Prince's live concerts.Besides on the song(The Walk)Detroit is called Rock City ala Kiss's Detroit Rock City!

He said he wanted to bring that to the black kids and make it like the 4th of July. cool
[Edited 8/4/09 12:53pm]

And I thought I was the only one to notice the similarities between Rick and Kiss!Prince was also influenced by Kiss live shows as evident in Prince's live concerts.Besides on the song(The Walk)Detroit is called Rock City ala Kiss's Detroit Rock City!

Yep. P was influenced visually by Paul Stanley of KISS. Especially through Controversy and 1999. The poses and the pouty mouth, besides Tim Curry's character in The Rocky Horror Picture Show, P was vamping on Paul Stanley. I don't expect too may people on here to be hip to this but I always saw that P AND Rick both were biting a lil' from Leif Garret! He was a popular teen idol from the mid to late 70's and the way Leif used to act on stage, his mannerisms, I saw in both Rick and Prince. I remember when Rick was on SNL performing Super Freak, Rick had that Leif Garret shit down! I remember when I was a kid, I was like "Damn, Rick reminds me of Leif Garret!" I thought that was so cool that Rick was that free to draw from that. Anybody remember the show CHIPS when Leif was a guest star on there? Man, P used all of that shit in Purple Rain. biggrin The Kid's character was a combination of Leif from Chips, Rembrandt from The Warriors, and Ron O'Neil as Priest from SuperFly. The inner sleeve picture of P from his second album, with the leather jacket, is dead on Leif. The same hair, everything. I still have all of this shit on videotape.

Yeah, so much so that Rick openly blasted P in the media. He told Blues and Soul magazine "Prince is a mentally disturbed young man. He's out to lunch. You can't take his music seriously. He sings about oral sex and incest. Something else, he doesn't want to be black. My job is to keep reality over this little science fiction creep. And if he doesn't like what I'm saying about him, he can kiss my ass. He's so far out of touch with what's really happening, it makes me angry." This was a direct quote from Rick, word for word....That cat was HELLA pissed at Prince. Now like Teena said, and I had always heard this too, that Rick was pissed at P because Rick's mother asked P for his autograph and P didn't give it to her. Teena said P wasn't like that so who knows? I talked a little bit about Rick with Cymone when I did some recording with him but A.C. didn't get into specifics. He just said it was tension towards the end of the tour but at first, it was cool. He didn't tell me anything that matched the anger in Rick's statement up above. And this was rare back then. It wasn't like how it is now with rappers and their beefs. Back then, u hardly saw that type of thing. Not printed anyway. Rick felt some kind of need to go public with his dislike for Prince. On one hand he says that u can't take P's music seriously but then he says that it's his job to keep reality over his head and because P is so out of touch, that it makes him angry?! WHY did it make Rick angry if P was so out of touch? Did it make Rick angry because he thought P didn't want to be black? WHAT made Rick so angry with Prince at that stage? Because P bit some of his stage act? Okay but it seems like it HAD to be something else more than P stealing some shit from Rick's act. Rick bounced back from that obivously when he blew up with SS. But that's a strong statement from Rick though. It showed the cat was NOT fucking around when it came to his feelings for Prince.

I never saw Leif Garret in Rick but I definately saw him in Prince back in 1979. I never saw Leif on "CHIPs" but I did see him on "Wonder Woman" and he performed "I Was Made For Dancing". He had on those skin tight black satin spandex pants that women used to wear during the disco era. The first time I ever saw Prince on "American Bandstand" later that year, I immediately thought of Leif Garret. Prince had the hair and he was slinging it like Leif. Prince also had the satin spandex pants and was prancing like Leif too. lol The only other male I ever remember seeing wearing those pants was Rod Stewart in the "Do Ya Think I'm Sexy" video. In that video, Rod pranced also. lol

Yep exactly. But see I think we're both around the same age so we were both kids back then so we were alive to witness all of this shit. And not just hearsay years later, but we were there when this shit was off and running. As far as Leif and Rick, I only saw flashes of Leif on Rick one time and that was when Rick was on SNL.

My favorite was when he was on "Radioscope" and he was pissed about Prince putting Vanity 6 before he put out The Mary Jane Girls. Rick was mad as hell and they were beeping out the cuss words left and right....

"That little sneak! He was on tour with me once and I've been talking about putting out a girls group for years! Of course, he's sneaky and overheard shit and always stealing my ideas. But I can tell you one damn thing, my bitches can sing! That damn Vanity ain't shit! She gives him pussy and he gives her a record deal!"

Rick was pissed! All I could hear was a "beep" here and a "beep beep" there and even more "beep beep beeps". lol

See..I didn't know that back then when it was going on. I didn't find that out until recent years but it definately would explain why he seemed madder than he ever had been. That and also hearing his actual voice raising hell on the radio rather than reading about it in either "Right On" or "Black Beat".

Exactly. Like this...I remember it was this girl I was dating, her older sister's friend was telling us that she had been to see Rick in concert. but this was out of state. I told her that I had also seen Rick out here in Cali. Anyway, she said that the concert was going on, Rick's on stage doing his thing and then everybody in the audience starts looking around. Away from the stage. And then she said she saw this big white dude who looked like a biker version of Santa Claus carrying somebody up on his shoulders. The closer they got to her, then she was able to see that it was Prince sitting on this dude's shoulders. It was Big Chick carrying Prince. I was like "Hell nah...What? I don't believe that shit!" She swore up and down that this big biker looking dude walked down the aisle and then back up the aisle, all the while carrying P's ass on his shoulders. For awhile, I didn't believe that shit cuz it sounded too way out there. Untill then on 1580 KDAY out here in L.A., the dj's talked about when P and Michael went on stage at a James Brown concert at the Beverly Theatre out here in L.A. One of the dj's went and he said that somebody carried P on their shoulders to the stage. I was like "Damn!!! She was right!" Then of course years later seeing the actual footage on tape of Chick carrying P to the stage and P hopped off like it wasn't shit! She told me back then, BEFORE the James Brown concert had even taken place, about how she was at a Rick concert and P had done the same thing, riding on Chick's shoulders.. She didn't even know about the Brown show out here cuz when she first told me, James Brown's show hadn't even happened yet. Obviously P was trying to upstage Rick and take the attention away from him on stage. To let her tell it, it worked.

That's not the only time he's referred to Prince in the female tense. I remember seeing a show on VH1 back in the late 1990s called "The List". On the show, they would have four celebrities nominate their choice of musical artists for whatever topic they were discussing and then they would vote and eliminate them down to a top 3.

On the episode that Rick was on, the topic was "Top 3 Artists of the 1980s". When it came around to one of Rick's turns to nominate someone, he nominated himself. lol Someone else nominated Madonna, and as the turns kept rolling around, one lady eventually nominated Prince. I was glued to my TV because I was waiting to see Rick's reaction. He said very calmly...."Good choice. That's a very good choice. She's beautiful, she's talented, and she knows how to rock those heels". lol

Anyway, the results of the show was.....

1. Michael Jackson
2. Madonna
3. Rick James

Now you know good and damn well that they voted for him over Prince because he was one of the guests on the show. lol
