I remember when he played this back in LA (the night of three shows) I was sitting in on the soundcheck and thought it was cool that he was playing it but I was really surprised when he actually did it during the show. Yes, old song 4 many of us and I won't comment on that. What I did want to mention is that I noticed during the actual show he looked at the lyrics (on his MAC) almost the entire time. Prince has always glanced at the lyrics book that he use to use (of course now it's a MAC) but he does seem to be using the lyric "sheet" more and more. Not to spread rumors, he's always used the book but he does seem to look at the "sheet" a little more often nowadays. Just wondering out loud...

I guess with so many songs to choose from and in the case of the 21 nights - almost arbitrarily, even the best of us are gonna need a hand. Can U safely say you remember several hundreds of songs verbatim?

They talk about it because people keep asking them about it.

I guess talking about the Revolution is more interesting than say...the music for Crossing Jordan. I found it disappointing in their video interview how focused they were on $. Please Prince, No Reunion!

well i would dare to say that i know every single prince song, yes. i can
write down, recite the lyrics of anything you'd throw at me.

but i also understand that i may have listened to a certain song 300 times
whilst prince just recorded it in 1985, put it on an album, performed it
live a couple of times and pretty much moved on with his life and music.

so that makes it totally understandable how someone with so many songs is
gonna need a bit of help sometimes. and as long as the performance is cool,
he could sit at his piano and read the lyrics all night long, lol.

um, except Boni isn't on the original and W&L are confuse

I don't think it has anything to do with who's playing on it, except for the fact that the people who played on it originally made it one hell of a kick ass track compared to what this new version is.

ur missing the point totally

no, I got the point. your point was just some further W&L-fan bashing. i was trying to take the pointlessness of your point and do something with it.

ahh...good point. I had never heard old friends for sale untill the release of the vault. I love the vault version. I later heard the original and loved it just as much but lots of folx do not like the vault version because they are attached to the first one they heard (500 times)
Lots of people have probably never heard this song. We really shouldn't put the blame on Prince, we've listened to him sooooo much that we are biased about EVERYTHING. It's ok that we are biased...just sayin' We are the ones who love his music and listen to it to death, let's not hold that against him. (general statement, not aimed at you MrMul) smile

I'm assuming your responding to my post

It doesn't seem you really heard me

The whole post says I love Princes JAZZ fusion with his sound
I mean there are all kinds of genre of music:classical, opera, jazz, blues, rock, house etc etc and there are people who specialize in that. That has nothing to do with elitism or anything like that

I love fusions of genre
But I have noticed that there are artist who are not jazz singers/musicians who's careers are shaky and they turn to try to do a jazz album like it's supposed to be easy to do

Again my post praised Prince jazz fusion music
I'm a fan of Purple Music, I still strongly believe Prince (had/has) his own sound that is unique:just like he expressing in Purple Music, not to often do you find artists especially now who have their own sound, a lot of copycats and clones.

I understood your post and for the most part agreed with it. Sometimes "jazz" is used as a marketing trick for middle-of-the-road hacks. And I noted your openness to P's "jazz." I was responding to several posts that had a knee-jerk reaction to anything that is not Purple Rain 2.

ok

Cause I'm just as big a fan of the 1976-1979 music demos 4 U Prince as I am of Purple Rain music
Around the World in a Day is my favorite:Condition of the Heart my fav on that 1
Old Friends 4 Sale(jazz fusion) is my favorite since I heard it on the radio back in 85/86 as a promo for the movie

I noticed Prince lost his sound more and more after the Batman album, his voice changed some and had a rappish tone to it, and you hear that on the In A Large Room(remix)

Why are people so precious about Jazz? It smacks of elitism or ivory tower hipness. Artists should be able to tool around in any genre, hybrid, classification, whatever. Why get hung up on what is Jazz? It's this type of attitude that closed people's minds to the great music of Madhouse. If it sounds good and has soul, that is my standard.

Just remember, Miles and Prince shared more than a friendship. They shared the same iconoclast, renegade and revolutionary approach to musical convention.

I don't know. The more people experiment with it the more people hear it. Therefore, the more people get into it.

I think that along the lines of what you said, rap had an adverse affect, not just in the post 1988years for Prince but music in general. I remember back then just about every RnB singer had a rapper on their song/album, every release/single had a rapper, and a lot of rap was remixes of classic songs(they were trying to get a hold of Prince music since 86. So a lot of originality is missing in the music, there are/were some good original groups, most came out of the mid80's - eeeeaaarly 90's most East coast too, but there was still a lot of remixing and borrowing going on.

That's rumors, no one knows who the letter is from or why

Since Lisa is a partial composer of the songs, maybe if it is from Prince, it's about that, again, it's all speculation. We don't know that it's from Prince

Maybe it's from the guy who is the biological sperm donor

Yes

Eric did bring a sound to Purple Music that just helped turn it up
Which is why I so digging the Family 2.0 stuff, there is a clip on their site
where Eric is recording his sax part and I just kept playing it over and over

Eddie M(Sheila E sax player)also had a sound that just sounded like it was made for Purple Music:the Ladder & Temptation,

Eric & Eddie had a style that just didn't sound like regular sax play

I got you OF4S. 86 was "one" of my fav periods because of the chemistry of the band at the time. Discussing bands is what we do here. We do this, it's what we do! I'd love to see Eric Leeds come to Montreux, always P's best sax player for me.

And I didn't say I didn't like it (again if you read my post) I did like it I said I liked it for a remix and I liked it for a live performance at the Jazz fest

I know mostly who played on the original: Eric Leeds also talked about it in an interview: Eric Sheila Lisa Wendy, Atlanta Levi Susannah

No your out of it, to be a Prince fan and not realize how much bands and band members matter to Prince music, there are always discussion on it
Your nuts

Yeah he's doing the show, I'm happy, no one is complaining about that or his current band.

This whole discussion is about the remix of a classic song

THAT'S IT, U ARE MAKING IT MORE THAN THAT. SHUT THE HELL UP AND LET PEOPLE DISCUSS WHAT THE HELL THEY WANT

great point jabroni smile one has 2 think of how many songs he has composed in his career and it's a credit that the notes he still remembers how 2 play so a little mess up on the lyrics isn't that bad. hell sometimes i can't remember the lyrics of his songs sometimes big grin

prince didn't lose his sound but he did lose the combined sound that made
the revolution so special. he said it himself in "in this bed i scream":

"how did we ever lose each other's sound?"

anyway, i'm not pining for a revolution reunion or anything. that was then
and this is now. lol.

the lotusflower album (the single disc retail version) is brilliant imo so
i could do without wendy and lisa, whom were on planet earth and look how
that album turned out. not sure what songs they are on but i don't really
like anything on that one as much as the stuff on the lotusflower disc.

my initial complaint about this particular song was just that he shouldn't
remake those cuts but just master the 'original' versions and release them
as they are.

but it's his call at the end of the day. and after the initial shock wore
off i'm digging this version a whole lot.

When I say, lost his sound, I don't mean staying the same(same as what? since his sound was as diverse as 4U - Lovesexy Batman even as well as Madhouse, the Family:Screams of Passion, YES Nothing Compares, Sheila E:Dear Michaelangelo Love on a Blue Train, Shortberry Strawcake, the Time:I Don't Want 2 Leave U, Ice Cream Castles)

Prince had/has a definate sound, and your hear it in a diverse groups of songs just like those I listed above. A lot his music was timeless in my opinion, vvery different and distinct. I'm not saying that none of his music after Batman or Diamonds & Pearls did not have it, I just hear less of it, there are a lot of Prince songs that sound like regular rnb or pop or rock. Space Tangerine (the Rainbow Children album) have that sound. I know a lot of u may like it, but Love Sign sounds like a regular rnb song, then there are a lot of songs from Rave that, I would not be able to point out as Prince, there are also the James Brownish songs that don't have the Purple touch like:Irrisistable Bitch, Love or Money, Housequake had (those are songs that have a James Brownish inspiration but is definately Prince music.

I like Lotusflow3r because it sound like Prince too me, I like Rainbow Children because it sounds like Prince, there are songs here and there that 'sound' like Prince post Diamonds & Pearls, I should have add lost his sound or lost his vision or something.

And I didn't bring up W&L, I think when we talk about Prince's music, we just to quickly to bring them up like someone is comparing what he is doing to what he did when they were in the band,(Lisa probably had a longer effect with collaboration in Prince's music than Wendy anyway)

because when I'm talking about Prince music I'm talking about Leaving 4 NY(promo) Tick Tick Bang Head Soft n Wet, Dirty Mind, Sexuality, Do Me Baby Private Joy, the Walk, Nasty GIrls, All the Critics, Let's Work, Computer Blue, God, Girl Olivers House, Screams of Passion, Hon E Man,Mia Bocca etc etc

Could his return to Minneapolis be associated with a rummage thru the vault to re-record some of the long unreleased tracks? Maybe there'll be another Crystal Ball like affair, but with new versions etc...

lol that's crazy to sum it up to 3 years. W&L while working with Prince was not an individual team, I don't get why people do this??

Like Lisa did nothing with Prince prior to Wendy joining the band?

Lisa immediately was pulled into working night and day with Prince on music from 1979/80 released Prince albums, unreleased music and protege music

and even then we don't know what behind the scenes collaboration Wendy included since she was in Minneapolis right after Lisa joined the band during the Dirty Mind era

not to miss that a lot of music Prince put out after they were gone was still music he created with them and/or various Revolution members

Power Fantastic
Crystal Ball
In A Large Room with No Lights
most of the music from SOTT was from the Dream Factory, even some music from Lovesexy:Eye No/Ball, Graffiti Bridge and onward
not only that but in the last 5 or so years since they have been talking on a regular basis, Prince has sent music to them to add a piece to(we don't have record of those songs, most likely they help out 4 free)

here is the point ..all hypothetical tho, if any of his songs had a different combination of players on them that recorded the song, then years later he took another set of players 2 play the same song, would the response b as adverse as it has been in this thread?

xample ...if the whole parade album was originally done by the new power generation then years later prince did it with the revolution, would u feel differently about it?

cause this is what's been done live by the way but the constant thing is prince ..

doesn't matter how many songs were created in that time frame, bottom line is wendy started poking her head around 1983 and even if songs were used after 1986, the bulk of her playing with prince is only 3 years.

and she's a rhythym guitarist only ..not a lead guitarist like dez or even mico ..how many guitar solo spots did prince give wendy? or hell how many keyboard solo spots did he give lisa? fink runs circles around her and renato does as well.

hence both of them r good at what they do, but he has had better musicians them both of them period.

not to miss that a lot of music Prince put out after they were gone was still music he created with them and/or various Revolution members

Power Fantastic
Crystal Ball
In A Large Room with No Lights
most of the music from SOTT was from the Dream Factory, even some music from Lovesexy:Eye No/Ball, Graffiti Bridge and onward
not only that but in the last 5 or so years since they have been talking on a regular basis, Prince has sent music to them to add a piece to(we don't have record of those songs, most likely they help out 4 free)

doesn't matter how many songs were created in that time frame, bottom line is wendy started poking her head around 1983 and even if songs were used after 1986, the bulk of her playing with prince is only 3 years.

and she's a rhythym guitarist only ..not a lead guitarist like dez or even mico ..how many guitar solo spots did prince give wendy? or hell how many keyboard solo spots did he give lisa? fink runs circles around her and renato does as well.

hence both of them r good at what they do, but he has had better musicians them both of them period.

Well Said... biggrin

lol that's crazy to sum it up to 3 years. W&L while working with Prince was not an individual team, I don't get why people do this??

Like Lisa did nothing with Prince prior to Wendy joining the band?

and even then we don't know what behind the scenes collaboration Wendy included since she was in Minneapolis right after Lisa joined the band during the Dirty Mind era

Your going a bit to deep lol
Fink Lisa & Renato are 3 different styles
Why are you comparing them?
I take nothing from Dr Fink

And where is all the music he created with Renato? that people are booting about?
And again, I don't know why U(people) continue to lump Lisa & Wendy together(the haters & lovers)

Lisa came to the table on her own, and I again say she had a profound affect on what became Prince music + proteges

I'm not looking at Wendy & Lisa a duo prior to 1986/87

since u want to throw in others, I'll throw in Susannah too, because her insiration went even further than just music and songwriting, shit some of the best Prince songs she's the muse

Yeah, I don't understand why people do that, it wasn't just about Wendy or Lisa(:the co-creator of that songs) but also Sheila E and Eric Leeds Atlanta Bliss

A lot of us are fans of these people sound and collaborations too

here is the point ..all hypothetical tho, if any of his songs had a different combination of players on them that recorded the song, then years later he took another set of players 2 play the same song, would the response b as adverse as it has been in this thread?

xample ...if the whole parade album was originally done by the new power generation then years later prince did it with the revolution, would u feel differently about it?

cause this is what's been done live by the way but the constant thing is prince ..

I don't think you would have the same history if they were different people

When I understand how indivual and unique each human is, I have to say yes I probably would have a different thought.
It was the right people: Dez, Matt, Bobby, Cat, Susan Rogers, the guy who directed Purple Rain, Susannah, Sheila

Only Morris could have been the lead for the Time, anyone else it would have been a different dynamic, Alexander O'Neal wouldn't have had what it took to do the Time

The version that Prince 'released' is by far superior to my trained ear than that heap of shite that never saw the light of day. (pun intended)
