He's not fool enough to attempt to do it in its original version. So the best thing to do is do a way different take on it. Just be glad he is realizing the fan favorites and attempting to do something relevant with them. I think out of some mad purple way, he is kind of paying respect by not bastardizing the song by recreating it as it was then, whcih has played a part of the Revolution myth.


Just like how he he re-did Dorothy Parker back in 2001-2002.

I remember when he played this back in LA (the night of three shows) I was sitting in on the soundcheck and thought it was cool that he was playing it but I was really surprised when he actually did it during the show. Yes, old song 4 many of us and I won't comment on that. What I did want to mention is that I noticed during the actual show he looked at the lyrics (on his MAC) almost the entire time. Prince has always glanced at the lyrics book that he use to use (of course now it's a MAC) but he does seem to be using the lyric "sheet" more and more. Not to spread rumors, he's always used the book but he does seem to look at the "sheet" a little more often nowadays. Just wondering out loud...

Instead of comparing it to the original version, I am happy to be able to listen to both. The original version had more energy but the band work is great on the new one, IMO.

and of course Madhouse, but it wasn't jazz but a fusion of it in Prince's music
even A Large Room with No Light(1986) is jazz fusion + purple music

I'll say it one more time, I like this IALRWNoL (remix)as long as I look at it like that, I won't be so critical.

It's cool that Prince reworks the classics and adds a new fresh Spin to them

Why are people so precious about Jazz? It smacks of elitism or ivory tower hipness. Artists should be able to tool around in any genre, hybrid, classification, whatever. Why get hung up on what is Jazz? It's this type of attitude that closed people's minds to the great music of Madhouse. If it sounds good and has soul, that is my standard.

Just remember, Miles and Prince shared more than a friendship. They shared the same iconoclast, renegade and revolutionary approach to musical convention.

I mean there are all kinds of genre of music:classical, opera, jazz, blues, rock, house etc etc and there are people who specialize in that. That has nothing to do with elitism or anything like that

I love fusions of genre
But I have noticed that there are artist who are not jazz singers/musicians who's careers are shaky and they turn to try to do a jazz album like it's supposed to be easy to do

I'm a fan of Purple Music, I still strongly believe Prince (had/has) his own sound that is unique:just like he expressing in Purple Music, not to often do you find artists especially now who have their own sound, a lot of copycats and clones.

this is a funky and sassy version but i must say i like the original version because to me it has more energy and life in it.Prince is so creative that he can change any of his song to fit a format...

Nice new studio version and I especially dig the fact that he partially plays the same tune on guitar where the flute plays. Indeed good that he took this song from the shelf, so to say.
I was amazed that he'd played it recently on the 3 concerts, but this means he may be give the song a new life!

I wonder - was this put up online cos Prince is currently having a spat with Lisa? (he sent her a threatening lawyers letter to shut her up about the revolution days) .hits 2 birds with one stone - he gets a bit of attention via the Montreux site/show and also gets a jab at Lisa and Wendy.... he's all cryptic...some things don't change LOL

so he releases a track from the revolution days, with absolutely no revolution era members present on the new version...a way of saying....'see, you didn't have an influence on me then, and I don't need you now'.....

the original is busy but it also has a SPACE of its own....its own unique vibe....and the interesting thing is that W&L, and even more importantly Eric Leeds (was Atlanta Bliss on this too - or just Eric?), so put their stamp on this track, much like a lot of the Dream Factory tracks.....

I wouldn't go so far as to say the new track is inferior - just not as quirky IMHO..and its the quirky vibe of the original that makes it stand out....

The version that Prince 'released' is by far superior to my trained ear than that heap of shite that never saw the light of day. (pun intended)

I think he could make a great album by reworking some of the unreleased tracks like this and make it sound like The Vault which is a great album, play this song back 2 back with Splash, just wicked.

I got you OF4S. 86 was "one" of my fav periods because of the chemistry of the band at the time. Discussing bands is what we do here. We do this, it's what we do! I'd love to see Eric Leeds come to Montreux, always P's best sax player for me.
