It's Jazzy Cool...I've never heard the song b4. A whole song? cool. Something new and kinda nice. I keep listening to it and it sounds better each time.
Curious about more new tunes. Help others get ahead. You will always stand

One can revisit something and not live there. I visit my uncles house. I don't live there. He's visiting that song again...saying hi, throwing in some growth is not living in the past. My main point is that I often hear people saying that he's not making '84-'87 sounding albums anymore. He shouldn't. It ain't 1984. I think that was a large point of the divorve between him and the revolution. Prince changes a lot and changes fast. He's constantly going thru "cabinet changes". Some people don't like that about him. But it's him...it's how he operates. Take the bad with the good or vice wersa, however it is U look at it. If your husband/wife is a baker. They're GONNA come home with flour on themselves. It what they do it's how they operate. If U hate flour on someone...U soulnd't have married a baker. CuZ that's something about them that ain't gonna change unless they change what they do...and at that point, they're not them anymore, but what U've coerced them into being. Now if PRINCE decided he didn't want flour on himself anymore/ din't want change so often/fast, then that's something we're gonna have to respect about him...if we look at him as an individual and not a puppet there for our desires. OK....after listening to it about 10 times, its fine. Nowhere near as bad the Old Friends fiasco.
I can dig this. Very Steely Dan. Although not saying "Welcome to the rat race" is criminal. [Edited 7/15/09 19:23pm] [Edited 7/15/09 19:30pm]

As ?rince gets older: he gets religion, becomes vegan and plays elitist foofy jazz at the Montreaux Jazz Festival. I may not like the man.
I may not like his music after the mid 90s. I respect his current artistry...I just don't like him. No hate.

Ok my take after one listen? It's nice and always great to hear new music from P however it's no original.
The original had passion and a rawness to it that makes it the classic it is. On the plus side there are some nice moments and he does a good job making it fresh sounding...kinda. The ending is anti-climactic by P styles but with this jazz tip this is how he usually plays it so that's cool. I also find it interesting that he picked this song after his recent comment about featuring his vocals more which this song definitely highlights. Overall 6.5 outta 10 [Edited 7/15/09 19:56pm] [Edited 7/15/09 20:36pm] The greatest live performer of our times was is and always will be Prince.

You all were never supposed to hear the original version! This (Montreaux Jazz Version) of "In A Large Room with No Light" should be the original version to your ears! Out of respect of his current band (a smaller version of The Musicology band) and The Revolution, why release the original? YHWH is Elohim and Yahsohua is King! [Edited 7/15/09 21:20pm]

[Edited 7/15/09 21:20pm] it is a great tune...however a good percentage of his fans already know that we know about his unreleased tunes. I think this is a reason why he is letting us hear a classic. And was this song was one of the tunes that were supposed to be released on Crystal Ball 2? He knows we heard it...just like when he released the live version of Rebirth.... okay, there's 2 things i just gotta say that i don't think anyone else has said - to the weirdo-gonna-defend-prince-no-matter-what-chick, i'm not sure you even understand or listen to music in the same way that nupwrsl, dre, myself, and others perhaps do. I don't need to see visual documentation of this, or hardly any of his recording sessions, per se. His ever-changing studio roster has made that quite easy-i know for a fact that if i hear a tune that obviously contains(to use an exmple other than w&l)dez dickerson's guitar and vocals, that it probably ain't an Exodus outtake-capice? I know the sounds of those players, both as individual musicians, and as a collective group of players-one that undoubtably had amazing "chemistry", synergy, whatever one wishes to call it, and a very specific "vibe". To suggest they didn't is either blind rubbish or true ignorance-he kept many of those players, in different configurations, for years; are you inferring Prince would have that poor of taste in musicians/collaborators-??
For example, though it's his own composition, to hear gilberto perform girl from ipanema(to use a commonly known song) without the one-of-a-kind chemistry of getz' brilliant saxophone playing, your ears know something's missing. (by the way, your ears know stan getz when you hear him, he's like no one else in his playing style, likewise is true of eric leeds-and i've never seen nor need to see eric talking about the session for my ears to know he's on that recording) And yes, as jazz recordings go, this is rather uninspired, bland, and unimaginative. It sounds like it's trying so hard to not be the original, one can't help but compare them. The recording itself sounds as if it's been made in comparison to the original, which is what draws the bob belden reference i think. BTW, Prince knew "that one"(if u prefer it not be called the original[but it is!]) before this one too... Anyway, point number two is that, in that transparent effort to not be the original, he butchered a wonderful vocal melody! This new one is fey and intentionally astray frome the (eek!) "original" melody of the vocal line, moreso than the timing or whatever it was that someone pointed out, tho i get that too. It supersux that as a result there is no followable vocal-you can't sing with it!!-and the "previously circulating vintage pirated cassette tape" version was hella fun to sing with!! Okay, one more point, a humorous one-hell yeah he's aware of fansite activity and chatter, and the misheard "woman with a dick in her hand" lyric-is a common enough misinterpretation that it's even listed on www.amirite.com -and considering he's still playing mister purity, he was gonna make damn(oop, sorry prince, dang) sure he pronounced e-v-e-r-y letter of the word drink lol -go listen again!-it's so obvious! Like he knew we'd be listening for that line specifically! Oh, wait! Being prince we're talkin about, it's entirely possible that it was dick and he changed it to drink! lol [Edited 7/15/09 22:04pm] EDIT: OMG folx i'm so sorry, but amirite is gone! It was the best! Huge bank of misheard lyrics, user-sumitted style-maybe if you check the internet archive...Wonder if P had them taken down? hmmm...well anyway trust me, LOTS of people have heard the line as "dick" -in the "previously circulating vintage pirated cassette tape" version that is...
