The nail has been hit on the head!
In my own case, I don't expect anything from Prince. I don't think he is a god and I don't think some of his fans here can be rational about any critism or opinion that they deem anti-Prince. All I know is that his last few albums don't do anything for me and at this point, I feel I have or are about to outgrow him. I will always be grateful for Prince's earlier music and it is the reason I am here. I do not feel I have to love what he's doing now to remain a member of this fan community. I was starting to feel guilty about feeling that I have outgrown his music. I truly feel that he has gotten lazy over the past few years, and with all the legal threats against fans, he isn't looking too good. I also will always appreciate his earlier music but I'm not a staunch fan as I once was.

Nope am not a "diehard" anything of that kind, I'm just admitting that he has got his motivations that we aren't conscious of. He didn't ask to follow him it was our own choice. I also think that during his gigs, he gives everything and shows that throughout his performances he cares about the audience still present.. Of course sometimes (often) it's not affordable, U see I do not agree always [Edited 7/8/09 17:36pm] We make our own way to heaven everyday

ganesh, it is very true that it is our own choice to follow him or not. However, in the earlier days (prior to the year 2000), it was much easier to follow him. His music actually was on fire, and it meant something. His motivations of which you speak? it is pretty clear that all he cares about nowadays is throwing big Hollywood parties (of the last one he threw was a bust though), trying to stay in the good graces of A-list celebrities and alienating the common folx by charging insane amounts of money for tickets. How's that for starters? Money in the bank. Please. Prince needs to get a grip on reality or he will probably lose the few fans he has left.

I might be a former fan. The website is pathetic and a slap in the face to fans who paid good money for something much, much better. He should be ashamed of himself for that, and I really don't understand the people who say it doesn't bother them. More power to ya and all that, but really...I don't understand. Then there's the music. I like one of his two new albums a lot but am horrified by much of the other one. And then there are the preachy lyrics and whack interviews. And more and more, I find it hard to accept his hypocritical contradictions (e.g., "Hey, look the other way while I blatantly 'borrow' this Hendrix riff without crediting it," when you know he wouldn't take too kindly to anyone doing that to one of his riffs). So yeah, I might be a former fan...right now, anyway. He's still the best live performer I've ever seen, even if he doesn't respect his fans enough to start his shows at anything close to the advertised time. I'd go see his live show in a hot minute. They're awesome.
All that said, he could win me back in his corner still. I'm not irretrievably gone yet. But I'm certainly not happy with him right now.

YES!!!!!

I was contemplating to myself-am I too far gone now? the answer is no. He could still win me back in his corner but I have lost faith in him and his studio music.

Some of the other things he does, with him not letting us in on those motivations, leads to misunderstandings, like it would in a real relationship.

I'll never be a former fan..one thing about following Prince is he showed me how to open my mind and appreciate all types of music which admittedly led to me love other types of music..I stopped drinking the "purple koolaid" years ago, which makes it easier to critique him and recognize his flaws. But he will always be my favorite musician..even if I listen to Santogold all day and Esperanza Spaulding all night, I'll always have room on my playlist for some of his tracks. For many who grew up with him, his songs are a soundtrack to our lives..each song brings up a moment in your life, what u was doing at that time.. Prince isn't the only one whose changed his taste in music, or at least brodened it as he got older. I just read someplace that Iggy Pop is a jazz fan, yes Iggy Pop.
When any of you ex-fans mention that some of his new stuff does not meet your standards I'd appretiate your taking time to list examples. I can't agree or disagree with your statements if you just say "I don't like his new stuff either" or "one of his new albums I don't like" which one and why? I really would enjoy reading your thoughts.

I really would enjoy reading your thoughts. Sorry, that was me. I meant MPLSound because I think the funk is very, very weak, does not represent the Minneapolis Sound, and has some of the worst lyrics I've heard in a long time. The standouts on the album are "Dance 4 Me" and "Ol' Skool Company" ("No More Candy 4 U" has its good points as well), but even the standouts are seriously flawed and only stand out against what I consider to be very subpar material. The lyrics to the first three songs on the album are embarrassingly bad and set the tone for an album that really misses its mark.

WOW.....i thought i'd give whoever a chance to defend Lotus.....read not one decent defence yet
kinda funny seeing someone thats been a member for a month telling folk to take a hike.....im glad Prince has taught you SO MUCH-fortunatley in the UK we have schools n stuff for that so i just go to him for sounds-unless i need to learn about greed and ignorant silences when the shit hits the fan-that I could learn that from him I guess..... with NOWHERE else to discuss-certainly not on the official site-with nowhere else-why shouldn't folk moan if they aint happy Mabey we should all sit and HOPE he takes pity on us mortals and throws us some scraps.....YEAH FUCKING RIGHT-get some self respect-he just plays n writes tunes-FOR ALOT OF FREAKING CASH-IT AINT FOR LOVE NO MORE he aint that great these days-and yeah he may be great live-does that seriously mean he can do ANYTHING and get away scott free..... ? it s singing a tune and playing a guitar for fucks sake-not world changing politics. Man he takes himself way too seriously AND OBVIOUSLY-SO DO SOME OTHERS PS-all these folk defending him-you did all join-right .? Cuz im guessing some talk the talk-but I'd bet you all didn't put your money where your mouth is and joined.....I didn't wait till this place said join-i took a leap of faith on day 2 (2 avoid day 1 prioblems) and paid up-so thats why im mad-and im entitled to be so please-if your gonna defend his current actions or lack of-leave the emotional worship bullshit at the door please-some of us are wayyyyy past that stage

I don't know if it's been asked but why the hell would a former Prince fan wanna come here to this site? That even includes the Non-Prince section. I can't speak for others, nor do I want to but when Im done with an artist as a fan, the LAST thing I wanna do is talk about that person or go to a site that has to do with the artist, no matter how good the music was for me in the past. It's just something I don't understand. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

i agree on a few things all you guys have said, i hope prince has learned how to treat his suppportes, fans, whatever, alittle more better, after yhe passing of mj.do you think God forbid prince passes that people will treat him the same way, like mj with a memorial like that,he needs to treat his fans with more respect, and not like we are shit,mj, was not like that towards his fans.i heard horrible stories the way prince treats his fans, thank God he wasnt like that with me.he was nice with me, but i heard some horror stories.not being able to look at him in the eye.so on and so on.what kind of crap is that?

You can be a fan of his music, but not a fan of the person who creates the music.
99 percent of us have never met the man,or ever had a one on one conversation with him. Other then the way we see him in the "spotlight" we know nothing more about him. We will never truly understand his "method of madness" when it comes to ticket sales, web sites (including his),and the way he treats his fans. His personal life is just that, personal..... I honestly don't feel like a miss treated fan. I don't like the last minute ticket sales or the long wait in line, but thats really the worst of it. When I get through those lines and he finally hits the stage he always gives me what I paid for and well worth the wait (at times more than two hours of live music). I love that he has a sense of humor as well, and talks to the audience. Come on people, lighten up. I agree that Lotus is a joke, but maybe there where plans that didn't fall through. No promises where made, besides getting a memeber shirt. Shit happens. I could really give a crap about the time it has taken us to start getting the shirts. People are getting them, SLOWLY, one at a time. But at least someone is doing their job. None of his actions should surprise any of us. If you choose to no longer be a fan then mean what you say, move on. But really how many of us are really going to do that? He is an addiction Say it's just a dream...
