"Here" Appreciation thread

Alright... so it took me a minute or so to warm up to "Here".

When I first played it, I heard the intro music, and quickly dismissed it as a throwback. The music reminded me of "Delirious" at first, and I thought Prince was channeling his old music. I had no interest in the song, and turned it off after about 10 seconds.

Then something happened, and I wore out Boom, and Crimson and Clover, and $, and popped in the other CD and sat back and tried to listen to Prince's "direction" of that CD.

I liked U're Gonna C Me, and then Here came on again. I don't know why, but I gave it a chance. lol (I do that sometimes. I'll fall in love with a song or songs, and forget about the rest of the CD until I want to puke when that songs I love comes on again, or when I lie down at night and I can't get the song out of my head.)

Anyway, so Here comes on.

This tune has grown on me, and is arguably my favorite song on the CD. It's a "conflicting" song, where Prince struggles with his emotions... much like "Eye Hate U".

I love the fact that he doesn't want to see her, or want her near him, but there's an inner turmoil battle, and his interest/love comes out, and he has to have her there with him. I LOVE that struggle, and the music has grown on me to the point where... it's another amazing song, in my book.

I'm not crazy about the whole "I'll cry" verse. (Come on dude, you're 50+ years old. Put away the tears and grow up! I can't play this song for a chick and be like... "I'll cry and love you like crazy".)

But nonetheless, the song is brilliant... musically, emotionally, and for the most part... lyrically. (minus the "cry")

Great tune... prob my fave on Lotus Flower, which goes like this now.

1. Here
2. Crimson and Clover
3. Boom
4. $
5. U're Gonna C Me

I hate when people rhyme 'baby' and 'crazy.'

I find it really lazy. Like a line people use in songs when they really don't have anything to say.
They don't even rhyme technically.

I liked teh song, but haven't played LotusFlow3r since april ... only listened to it the first week or so.

I guess I am like Prince, he doesn't seem to be interested in the whole concept anymore as well ... No site activities, no t-shirts, no promotion, no concerts !!

Guess now we have to wait for the next album to appear ...

The Lyrics on this track are soooo good. I totally love it.

The 'intro' music is some kind of descending synth (or is it ascending?) I think, and for sure I feel the track would be improved if Prince had used an acoustic piano (or an acoustic guitar...drool) in place of the synth, or maybe just left it out all together.

surprised they haven't linked this to the recent Here appreciation threads. Instant top 5 Prince song for me. I JUST stopped playing it repeatedly everyday this past week.

It's a song, poetry if you will, don't take the "cry" as a literal thing. it's an expression to convey the emotion of the idea of just how much he will love her. Better now huh? I didn't listen to this whole project in it's entirety for a month cause I got stuck on that song!

"Here" and "$" are the best songs on this whole set imho.

I don't care for it when people think that a rhyme has to rhyme a certain way for it to be a justifiable rhyme.

I'm in. It's the only song that has stuck with me on Loutus so far. The lyrics are feminine for a dude, but I'm feeling the song anyway.

I noticed it, and I almost tried to make the entire post 'rhyme.'
I'm apparently even lazier than people that use 'baby' and 'crazy' as rhyming words, though, because I couldn't even be bothered to think of another possible rhyme.

But really, if you're just using 'baby' and 'crazy,' why not re-record one of the other million songs that resort to it?
It's overdone.
And it's still not a 'pure' rhyme.

Where Prince and his lover are concerned...The crying is literal. I know that much about Prince...to tell you that when he feels "Love's arms wrapped around him, for all time...never wanting to let go..." Prince is going to cry.

The Love that Prince sings about from the bottom of his heart is very sentimental. Prince is a sweetheart. cool

absolutely love it. it's a little tough for me to hear when i pay close attention to what he's singing, as it hits a little close to home for me from time to time.

but it's a favorite from this set.

It has nothing to do with "knowing" Prince. It's has alot to do with writing a song. Besides, I never said that I don't take it literal however, I do leave it open to be whatever I want it to mean, It could be different day to day. It's a song/poetry. Take it for what you want but don't think that it's always face value.

Everything is overdone, if that was the case we wouldn't really see to much new music at all. What hasn't been done before? Also, who cares if it's not a 'pure' rhyme! When you're telling a story with a rhyme scheme and phrasing is also involved, you do what ya gotta do.

i LOVE Prince's song "Here". But i think that what Prince is saying in this song is that Karmicly he has to be with one woman while he is IN LOVE with another Woman who is with him always in thought but at a physical distance from him on Earth.

to me, he's saying that he's keeping love at arm's length because he just doesn't want to be involved at the moment, but he can't resist it.

could be about a new love or a past love.

No, i disagee completely, he has a woman he has always been IN LOVE with and she is on Earth with him but at a considerable physical distance, and because of Karma they have to be with other Lovers, but they are ALWAYS thinking of each other and therefor always have each other spiritually while with other Lovers until they can get together on the earthly plane. i'm a Rosicrucian so i understand alot of the spiritual and physical planes very well and can go into great detail. But that would take alot of thread space.

He doesn't want the Lover who is there, he wants the woman he is IN LOVE with Spiritually and who exists physically but in another geographical location. He is pining for his SPIRITUAL LOVER that is who he wants "HERE" he doesn't want the physical Lover there as Much as he want his Spiritual Love but he wants to furfill his Karma, so want who u have and u've got to live with it, but u really want someone else. Everybody has lived it to some degree and extent.

I think you've made this waaay too complex.

I think Prince is struggling with his fears of having her near him. She makes him weak because of the level of love he has for her. For that reason, he doesn't want her "Here".

But when it comes down to it, after he thinks about her, and what they could have, his desire overcomes him, and he wants her.

That's all. Pretty simple.

Wonderful song!

u r way wrong, Prince doesn't have fears of having any woman close to him. He has had so many woman because he Loves woman he very simply is IN LOVE with a Woman who exists on Earth but is at a considerable physical distance. u just don't like that fact.---- i have to go to bed because i have kids to tend to tomorrow and i need my rest.
