sure, fuck the competition: Prince is # 1 in originality.

but -unfortunately- not in sales - and that's not fair, he deserved better: Parade, SOTT and Lovesexy should have sold a lot more

I guess the casual record buyers can't keep up with Prince's music,

his ever changing image and sound, his rude attitude in the 80s. etc.

maybe Prince's strengths are also his weaknesses ?

Never mind let Jacko hold the record for best selling albums: Thriller, Off The Wall, Bad those are great also, but Prince is so much more interesting - so much more diverse as an artist. MJ could never had created the SOTT masterpiece almost all by himself.

Jacko is an amazing performer/ singer - Prince is also an original producer/ musician.

sorry for mentioning MJ as "competitor"..... Stevie, Hendrix, Santana, James Brown.. those are maybe more interesting, but it always turns out to be MJ who's Prince's closest "competitor". Right???

I think Prince nailed it right on when he said in Don't Play Me that his only competiton is his own past. His work is constantly compared to his earlier stuff, and I think it's a little frustrating for him.

Some people are just very versatile with what they do, to mention only a handful: Prince...Cher...Madonna...Carol Burnett...Bette Midler...Some entertainers are just very multi-dimensional as performers.

I wonder who draws the comparison with his competition.

As mentioned Prince seems to only view himself as his own competition.

Do we as fans get too hung up on old skool media driven rivalries, when maybe the artists themselves respect and drive each other on?

Comparison of artists is always a dangerous thing, as you need to clearly establish what you are calling on as a base to compare. And then you have to be willing to cop the hits as well as the props when they fall.

I much prefer to see Prince in isolation and appreciate his own career rather than compare or contrast it to another. Likewise with the artists I follow.

But please. Prince is so far in another league compared to these guys it's not even funny.

I can listen to any of the artist above and immediately say "that's Bowie" or "That's Madonna", but I can't tell you how many times my friends have listened to a song they liked and said "Really? that's Prince?" or "Prince wrote that ?"

He is the music first.
