and now we have 2 icons left in music.....

pop music has lost michael jackson at only 50,now theres 2 left prince at 51 and madonna turning 51 in august,now i wonder will these 2 great artist get the same treatment as we are seeing michael getting tonight....true these are 2 different artists and im sure the media will attest for that..they might say of prince of being eccentric,weird etc..and madonna as reinventing herself every year...on michael my personal take is only his music and what he leaves to the world,the other stuff i leave that to the media et all.....it reminds me a little of the night elvis died in 1977,everythiong stopped,there was no cell phones,computers back then mnostly telephome and television,now you have twitter,facebook,my space,you tube tying up all communication...notice now that were not even talking about farrah fawsett nor ed mcmahon...farrah just totally has been pushed aside 4 michael...like it didnt happen..shame in a way....rip michael

i dont think people pushed Farrah Fawsett aside we knew she was sick. yeah im sad about her death too!.. it's just more of a shock that MICHEAL JACKSON die suddly.

I can understand the op's perspective of two Icons left, if you are talking specifically about the 1980's. I think I would make it three including Springsteen in the mix. While there are many "icons" left in different fields and different generations, Michael, Prince and Madonna defined the 80's style and sound. It has been a long time since I considered myself a real fan of Michael Jackson having stopped buying his music after Thriller but having everything from before back to the j5, but I find myself grieving with surprising depth tonight. The whole world loves a comeback and Michael was so close to at least trying.

your absolutely right ..my apologies to all who replied to the statement..there are more than the 2 icons just mentioned...dylan,springsteen,mccartney,aretha,smokey,little richard,chuck berry and more..i guess getting caught up on the media yesterday i thought of the 2 biggest ones in the mid 80's(1984 i called "the triple threat of michael.madonna,prince )taking over music in that year.....

Madonna yes, she will get that star treatment. Prince will for one night in my opinion and have his music go all weekend. In my opinion in the 80's it has been. 1. Michael Jackson 2. Madonna close second 3. Prince 4. Lionel Richie 5. Whitney Houston.

gotta say-not seen much of any mention of Prince's name in all the stuff I been watching. No comparisons. Nothing. Yet akll the others mentioned earlier like Springsteen, Dylan , Elvis etc-have been mentioned constantly. I seriously don't think the press-well Sky and the BBC and all the folk they spoke to consider Prince as an icon like MJ at all which suprised me-but i guess it would as im biased./
The only mention was by Trevor Nelson who said nobody has come close to MJ's sucess-mabey Prince for a short while-but nobody else of our generation

I do agree tha there are only two icons left from the 80s but there are a lot of icons from 60s who are still living - Aretha Franklin,Mick Jagger, Diana Ross, etc. I was thinking to myself last night about how the media would cover Prince's death and I got sort of sad because I feel that he would get less mention of any major icon. I just don't feel that Prince's art is understood and appreciated by people. Also, the fact that people just dislike him. I noticed that a lot of people have been saying that there will never be another great entertainer after Micheal. I was wondering how someone can say that when Prince has been doing these amazing shows for the last couple of years. Its as if what Prince does gets not attention. Oh well, I'm glad that Mike is getting his due in light of his recent controveries and pray that Prince will to when his day comes.

To address one of your questions...Prince will never ever ever recieve the type of coverage from the media when he passes. He will get a mention but no way will he have entire shows discussing his legacy like we are seeing now with MJ. Madonna on the other hand will get the coverage we are seeing for MJ.

Not that I agree with it but as sad as it is Prince just isn't as respected or glorified like MJ and Madonna. MJ does deserve this type of coverage because he was one of the biggest entertainers of our time and he will be missed.

Prince will get what he deserves when it is time. Prince's talents are a lot more 2 digest because his skills are really more about the music than the visual. When Prince does leave this place, a lot of people will actually discover who this great talent was.....a lot of them 4 the 1st time.

I would add that I hope Prince's death doesn't elicit this kind of hoopla. One of the things I've always loved about Prince is that he purposefully keeps himself just outside the realm of pop culture. It's what drew me to him in the first place.
