Animal Kingdom - Why the distorted voice?

I really dig this song. (I know many of you feel the exact opposite... but that's neither here nor there for the moment. lol)

I was just wondering why you guys think Prince uses that distorted static sound in his voice.

It's kind of annoying, but I also think that it adds to the bizarre charm of this bizarre song.

Quirky toon. Some would say the song is so bad, it's good... but it's one of my faves on The Truth.

Any thoughts on why the distorted static voice?

Kind regards

But it sounds more like static. I see what you're saying, but... after giving it another listen... nahh... still static, not at all an "underwater" sound.

So the curiosity continues on my part. Maybe now that I think about it, he's using that static voice to sound like it's a "subliminal message" telling you to leave your brothas and sistas in the sea.

Hmmm...

it always reminds me of a "narrator" voice, not human/animal
but something different.

"not a human, not a man, something you'll never understand"
kinda thing.

it gives the song something extra. never understood why such
a lot of people hate this song, i think it's very good.

without the distorted vocal track it wouldn't be half as cool
as it is now.

i think he probably felt the song was stupid in the end and decided to distort the vocals. "yeah, it gives me courage, you know, like a veil I can hide behind..."

kind of takes the edge off of the melodramatic vocal delivery.

The fact he distorts his voice, gives the song more gravitas, its a powerful message and its Prince having fun playing with voiceboxes (Remember he went through a voice box phase in the early - mid 90s).
