I don't know really, thus the thread. I was under the impression that "Camille" was some sort of evil alter ego.

Camille is a character. Spooky Electric is his evil side; that little devil on his left shoulder. Find the story inside the Lovesexy programme. It explains more.

In a 1998 yahoo magazine the interviewer tells Prince of his brothers suspicions of Camiles origin and Prince says he is wise. Read it and it will tell you whom the character is influenced by.

A lot of Camille-voiced songs seem to enthusiastically explore Prince's id side: Rock Hard in a Funky Place, Strange Relationship, Housequake, Shockadelica and so on.

Camille wasn't evil; he just yielded to temptation. He found the color black and mustered all the hate he was able, and then allowed the dark side of him to create something evil. But Spooky Electric was really the evil one.

Camille wasn't evil just a different side to Prince. If you notice the liner notes/credits on "Sign O the Times" several tracks are credited to Camille. There was supposed to be an offical release by Prince as Camille but it got absorbed by SOTT. The persona stuck around for a while with "Scarlet P*ssy" and even to this day with the I-tunes release "P-Funk". Always noted by Camille tracks was the higher voice used in the singing style and most tracks with this vocal style get credited to Camille.
When eye go 2 a Prince concert or related event it's all heart up in the house but when eye log onto this site and the miasma of bitchiness is completely overwhelming!

I think you mean hermaphrodite. wink

Camille nis referred to as male. I'm just curious how Prince came to pick a woman's name for a presumably male alter-ego.

Ah, but he spells it Camille -a woman's name.

A mistake on his part? Or deliberate gender bending?

I thought Camille was a woman in Prince's initial conception. But when he needed to make Camille an alter ego of himself, he made her a man.

hmmm I've never heard that, but that could make sense. Keeping Camille female as his alter ego would've really been something though, dontcha think?

This is one of those areas where the expert Prince historians could probably clear it up much faster, but the way I remember it, Prince called Camille a female singer, or at least Rolling Stone did, in their review. Prince was really playing up his male/female sides during SOTT. The first single had Cat dressed up to look like Prince in drag, so I think he was pretty comfortable with Camille being female. My take on it, and it's only my take, is that when he wrote the Lovesexy tour book copy, he took the name Camille but since he was talking about himself, he used "he." I don't know if my explanation makes any sense at all, but that's kind of how I looked at it. I don't think it was a big deal to him at all, since he had been using the O+> symbol for years and later referred to himself as 50-50 girl.

Thank you! Exactly the kind of answer I was looking for. I guess it would help to read the Lovesexy tour book based on someone else's post earlier, but I was only 12 or 13 years old when he did that tour, and I lived in a small town in eastern Washington. Somehow I didn't get one of those books. Go figure. So what is the origin of Spooky Electric then? Where do we first see this one?

Spooky Electric was said to be responsible for the dark, angry, sexual Black Album. This came about when the critics of Prince's work didn't get the picture and he lashed out and created the Black Album. After some thought he created Lovesexy and then scrapped the Black Album. Spooky Electric is mentioned on Positivity.

Interesting. I always think of Dirty Mind as a more dark, sexual album than the black album.
