Susan Rogers vs Prince Rogers Nelson

I think Susans statement outweights Prince's
I think any artist that lives off his/her art needs to also have an ear or understanding of the people who are consumers. And that doesn't mean compromise...

2002 "Susan Rogers, for the record, doesn't know anything about my music. Not one thing. The only person who knows anything about my music (pause for pointed effect).... is me." Prince talks about Susan Rogers

2006 "Yes, Prince is correct on this, but only in one sense. In another sense, namely the experience of listening to music created by another, Prince knows his music the least. Because creating music and consuming music are two distinct processes." (Susan Roger's response about Prince saying she doesn't know anything about his music)

If Susan Rogers' statement is true, you could say that I know Prince's music better than her. I am farther away from his music than her, and more of a consumer of it.

Ultimately, this is why her statement is flawed and doesn't outweigh Prince's. Her reasoning allows that all of Prince's fans (or consumers of his music) know his music better than him.

It is the age old question about the author vs. audience.

I don't see why that makes her argument flawed. It's true... the people listening to the music do "in one sense" know the music better than Prince.

good points

But I don't think she is saying the audience knows the artist music better but knows from a different side,
I'm a painter and I'm seeing things from one standpoint, I'm always nervous about others seeing my work because I know they are coming from a different place of appreciation or criticism.

From my standpoint I question(ed) weither or not Prince genuinely appreciates "his music" image & vision. Allan Leeds recently made a similar comment on the Family 2.0 site. His music/style was so unique and influential from the pre 1990's.

Well they're both right aren't they. Prince knows his music in one way better than anyone else ever could, and other people know it in a way he would never be able to. As a fan you kinda want both POVs because they each offer something unique.

I wonder if he said it in a snipey way? A statement like that could have been said a few different ways. Each of them to mean something different.

Prince knows that with Susan she saw him at some of his most vulnerable times in the studio, she said he would always sing with his back to her

I envy her, because outside of the band members she was privy to music we have never heard before

Prince seems to always have a chip on his shoulder with his past team mates …. (Susan Rogers, Wendy & Lisa, Eric Leeds ….. the list goes on)

I have never understood why he finds it hard to look back and just marvel at the great work they did as a team. I can only assume that he really wants people to believe it was all him in the studio. People like Susan Rogers give off this quiet confidence. They seem very content with their involvement ….maybe because they know the work they were involved with far out-shines anything since.

Susan Rogers may not KNOW Prince’s music …. But that whole mid-80’s band and studio team knew how to make great sounding records
