True on both counts. But think about it....you never missed the longer versions of "Delirious", "take Me With U", "Darling Nikki", "Computer Blue", etc etc because you never knew them back then. You knew what you were given and it ended there. To think about him editing something NOW is ridiculous to even consider, but back then, we would have never known.

Moonbeam said: I think Prince nailed it with the single choices for this album. And "Delirious" was a top 10 hit, people! It's one of the catchiest songs on the album, and makes total sense as a single!
As for the "Free"/"Moonbeam Levels" debate, I love both songs a lot. I do prefer "Moonbeam Levels" and think it would have been an awesome closer to the album. I don't see why he couldn't have included both though. Time constraints? It's funny but damn near everybody I knew at the time when the 1999 album was released HATED the song "Delirious". People that I have known since, (not counting anybody on here) still don't like the song. And these are people who are long time fans. Me personally, I didn't hate the song and still don't. But like them, I thought the song was the skip over track of the bunch. As a musician, I was able to dig and appreciate the funky bassline and most people think it's straight up Elvis. Which it is to a degree BUT it's also up tempo old school gospel. It's THAT more than anything. That's what I like about the song. That and the cute Pampers baby voice at the end. That I always thought was such a cool touch to add at the end. So no, to me, it's defiantely not a wack song. There isn't a wack song on the 1999 album. As for the singles, I think Delirious is the weakest song for sure on the album, and yet it was a Top 10 hit, so I guess you can't really 2nd-guess it as a single too much (it charted higher than 1999 itself and nearly matched LRC.) That said, I think LPWM was a mistake because (although I adore it) it was too racy for radio airplay.Automatic would have been my choice. Yeah,"Automatic" definitely should have been a single.I'm surprised that it wasn't a single, since there was a video for it.This should have been the third single, after "Little Red Corvette".It's a stronger, more compelling song than "Delirious".I agree with you about "Let's Pretend We're Married".Excellent song, but perhaps a little too racy for pop radio. In fact,I don't recall ever hearing it played on the radio very much. In the end though, singles didn't really matter with this album, because many radio stations played most of the songs anyway. In my area, our local R&B station placed several songs in heavy rotation throughout 1983: "1999","Little Red Corvette","Automatic","DMSR","Lady Cab Driver" and "International Lover".All of these songs were played as if they were the singles.

I thought I was the only one on here who truly dug this song. I've written at least 3 threads about the song in some form or another. But that can be said about most of the threads I've written about the 1999 album alone. So yeah, as many times that I have championed the song "Free", no, I don't think it should have been a single. Like I've stated on here in the past, the songs that I think should have been the singles from this album are :
And in this order... 1999 Little Red Corvette D.M.S.R. (instead of Delirious which to me is the weakest song on the album. Didn't really need to be a single though because black radio played it TOO Death anyways!) Automatic (instead of LPWM) An edited 45 version of this song would have been bangin' and not only would it have gotten much airplay on black radio, it would have gotten much airplay on the pop stations ala Little Red Corvette. KROQ Radio which is out here in So Cali, in the 80's, were the leaders of New Wave in the U.S. They played Automatic anyways. If it were a single, it would have done very well. Much better than LPWM did anyways. That's what I'm talkin about! Agreed. "Automatic" was the cut on 1999 I played the most, along with "Lady Cab Driver" and "DMSR". In fact, "Automatic" pretty much made me a Prince fan, and 1999 was my first Prince album. I then went back, and got every other album from the beginning, one by one... saving whatever money I could, and running 2 the record store. I was just a kid in 1982 when 1999 was released... already listened 2 Hendrix, Santana, Parliament, James Brown, Stevie Wonder, Fela, King Sunny Ade, John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman, Jamaaladeen Tacuma, Stanley Clarke, Defunkt, Peter Gabriel, Albert King, Albert Collins, etc, etc. Not 2 go on 2 much, but the point is that I was already steeped in a rich, diverse, and talented musical web of influences before I heard Prince. It took quite a bit 2 impress me back then, even as a kid [quote] Yeah, at 8 years old, I was already into Parliament-Funkadelic, Hendrix, KISS, David Bowie, Zepp, Sabbath, The Ohio Players, Bootsy, The Isley Bros. And I just progressed onto heavier shit as time went by. So I was prime ready for P when he first hit. I wasn't on fire about his debut although I dug the song Soft and Wet. That's the reason I bought the album. The only other track I liked on there was "I'm Yours". But I REALLY liked his second album. Loved Bambi and Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad and the rest of the album was very cool too. Very Todd Rundgren meets Hendrix meets The Emotions. Very cool combination I thought. So I was fully on board by then. Dirty Mind was cool. It had that Rolling Stones "Miss You" vibe along with The Cars, who I also loved. But it was when he hit with the single Controversy that I was truly convinced that P was onto some "OTHER" shit. That song truly sounded like NOTHING else on the radio at that time. . It's a good song....fun and catchy. It's just that the other songs are superior I wouldn't say that. I think the disapproval it gets has more to do with the genre than the quality of the song. It continues the automotive theme started with "Little Red Corvette" and contains some classic Prince lyrics. It's got a catchy, bouncy synth line and a great chorus. "Delirious" is a light tune.It sounds like something that he didn't spend alot of time on.Nothing wrong with that.I just find the other songs to be a whole lot more interesting, lyrically and musically.

Youre right, as much as I hate the song delirious, it was a top ten hit and helped promote the album. How many great bands/muscians are out there that youve never heard of because their albums dont have a hit tune? Brilliant songs like Automatic and Something in the water need catchy pop numbers like Delirious to get them out there and heard. For all that I still cant stand Delirious. Sorry My name is Naz!!! and I have a windmill where my brain is supposed to be.....
