Jay and Dave never patched things up. Jay is a good dude and always try to end it but Dave is still a punk. Jay sent him a letter when dave had heart surgery and Dave never responded. Plus, Dave wanted Leno to come on to his show on Monday (Conan's first night) and Jay wouldn't because that would be rude to Conan. Dave is a punk for even tryin' to do that. Dave is a punk...Jay knows it, Prince knows it and must of us know it. That's why Jay has killed Dave for years in teh ratings.

Basically Letterman doesn't kiss Prince's ass as well as Leno does. Prince should certainly be treated with respect, but if you change your name to an unpronouncable symbol, expect someone to call you on the absurdity. Just don't do their show if you don't like it, but saying someone else is "better" than thim because of this is just childish.

Both Leno and Letterman do vapid, boring shows that only people with low IQs watch regularly. If you care about what Paris Hilton is up to, then you are the problem not a late night talk show host.

i prefer letterman, at least back when he had some edge. he might have taken the piss out of his guests, but he was smart. he knew that to get the flyover states to accept personalities like grace jones, pee wee herman, sandra bernhard or john waters, he'd have to make fun of them the way the viewers would want to. he treated them like freaks, they laughed it off, and america saw that these weirdo freako people had a sense of humor and might be allright after all. so in that regard, i see letterman as a very important supporter of artists, at least back in the day.

leno is an asskisser. he's the comedic/broadcast equivalent of hospital cafeteria applesauce. of course prince would like that. lol

I could not have said it any better. Leno used to be wicked when he was Johnny's guest host on The Tonight Show in the 80's. Once he got the full time gig he softened his edge. Dave has softened since his heart scare. I know for a fact that Paul is a Prince fan. Letterman always seemed proud to have him on the show.

I remember Prince was on David Letterman's show in 1994 singing "Dolphin" and 1996 singing "Dinner with Delores" and both times Letterman made fun of Prince's symbol prince that Prince was using as his name. During Prince's last appearance Letterman introduced him by saying, "Our next guest is one of the biggest names in music. Unfortunately nobody knows how to pronounce it." After Prince sang "Dinner with Delores" and went off stage, Letterman said, "What's the deal with Prince? Where the hell did he go? Did you see? He just ran out of here. He just took off! I think he's scared. I think he's frightened of me." Prince obviously got offended by that and hasn't been back on Letterman's show since. Prince started appearing on Leno's show instead beginning in 1998 singing "Come On" and Leno made no jokes about Prince.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

Big problems with hosts in Cali like Jay kissing way too much ass. Example, after Mel Gibson got busted driving drunk and thru a hissy fit slandering the jews. He goes on Jay's show and Jay kisses his ass to no end. No tough questions. No nothing. You could put a serial killer on his show and if for some reason that serial killer was somehow popular!!! Jay would suck his ass and give him soft questions. Larry King is not much better.

Sorry Prince, if ur gonna change your name to a symbol and go on a show that is all about comedy. You are gonna get your balls broke. Grow a set of balls and go on the who fucked who shows like Stern. Go on Letterman and screw it if he broke your balls. You changed your name to a symbol...a lil out of the ordinary??

No one gives a fuck what Prince wrote, shit half the people could not read it. Half like Leno, half like Dave. So fuckit. And if LENO HELD UP A SIGN SAYING "PRINCE IS BETTER THAN MICHAEL JACKSON EVERYONE KNOWS IT!" Ohh the shit - Prince would be pissed, his fans would be pissed, MJ was pissed. But somehow Prince feels like he can throw eggs in the late nite fued and every is happy.

Either that or Prince was just joking around and we are reading into this too much!!! HAHAHAHAAA!

I think that Prince did a wonderful job with the atmosphere of the set on The Tonight Show with the club feeling and the painting but unfortunately Somewhere Here On Earth is a song I don't care for at all. I'm glad for all the people who got joy from the song, I just didn't.

I think Letterman was just rude to Prince and made fun of him. It's one thing to be joked about (like Ellen and Jay making clothing or shoe jokes), but Letterman was just on a line of being disrespectful, IMO. Maybe it didn't start that way, but it ended up that way. I can't blame Prince for going to Leno to do shows instead of using Letterman.

And Prince isn't the first artist who has thought Letterman was unrelateable and phony. Annie Lennox and Cher both have similar stories, to name a few.

I agree...I like Dave but he was an ass to Prince, especially when P was on the show the same night(usually they tell jokes about someone when they're not on the same show). I'm glad Prince played on Leno throughout the last 15 years, Jay gave him a lot of leeway to perform songs that weren't even released(like Turn Me Loose).

Hmm, wasn't Prince about seventeen years late? Surely the "late night feud" has cooled over the years.

I think it's pretty likely that Dave never even sees what Prince wrote and if he did I doubt he would respond. Let's be honest here, Prince "dissing" you in the year 2009 doesn't have the same impact that it would have in 1985.

As far as Prince not appearing on Letterman goes I think we all know that the little guy is very thin skinned and Dave has a low tolerance for celebrity BS so they don't make a very good combination. I'd love to see Prince appear on Dave again but it seems extremely unlikely.

Mels racist rant was more than a DUI.

To Let Mel Gibson blame alcohol on the entire incident was insane. Jay didn't call him out. That is a problem in the media. I would think if Mel called the cops niggaz and he was to go on something like Tavis Smiley show things would be different - he would get called out. I have low expectations for this homophob Leno.

No one mentioned the rant and I forgot about it. I was just talking about Jay bringing up the DUI that happened last year is stupid. That's all I was talking about....I forgot about rant. Even though....let it go.

We (black people) do stupid stuff and we want to be forgiven and contiune our art. Life's to short...I ain't worried about Mel or any other fool out there. If you don't like him then don't buy his stuff.

If 50 cent (or any other rapper) was on Leno would you be mad because Jay didn't grill him about calling women bitches and ho's? That makes me more angry that we have a rich, powerful black man calling our babies bitches and ho's.

Look at it this way...

Jay = Warner Brothers/RIAA
Dave = Prince

The whole backstabbin', politickin' late nite war obviously affected Dave deeper than any of us could realize. Think of it this way - Dave was a huge fan of Carson's. TONS of respect between the two. Carson did eveything but come out and bluntly force NBC to make Dave his successor Carson when he was retiring. There was TONS of backstage stuff that went on between the NBC and Leno/Letterman (some that we were made privy to, others we'll probably never know). And it ended up with Letterman getting screwed out of something that, by all accounts, should've been his.

Now. We all know most of what's transpired between Prince and WB/RIAA. It's been a while now since it's happened - yet Prince, to this day, will not let it go and keeps singing about it. Is he being an a$$? Shouldn't he let it go too?

About hosts delving into personal business...

Well, you, I and a few others might care about people's "art", but it's a forgone conclusion that they will be asked about it and they know it (especially for someone engaged in a "pop culture scandal" - ie Paris' home movie, Hugh's divine blowjob or Mel's holocaustic sugartitty meltdown). Leno lucked into the whole Grant thing because Grant had already been scheduled to appear to promote "Nine Months" and Jay took advantage of it. Now, that's not to say that he'd ask about it but in a softball-type of manner, but it's all about ratings, man. It's all about ratings.

It must be terrible to play second string to Jay. I perfer his monologue and his selection of guest is better than Dave. It will be interesting to see the ratings with the new time change as he is up against Law & Order and CSI, both tops in their time slot. Will Jay be able to pull the ratings or on top in the ratings on off-law days/times.

Didn't read through all the posts but did anyone else catch Letterman's poke at Prince this week?
It was a joke about how it's becoming rare for a small in stature man to be head of something or another, then he said Prince was the only control freak left.
Forgive me for not quoting.
