I agree that Dave has "softened" up a bit. I remember when he was edgier, so to speak, and I didn't care for him too much. I also saw the show with Joaquin Phoenix and it was a bit strange and seemed to annoy Dave and he did make jokes about it. I laughed through the entire segment, but over the past few years Dave seemed to have calmed down a bit.

I have noticed that Dave has sort of a short temper. But since "none" of us can speak for Prince, but only "speculate", and at least knowing how Prince is "unpredictable", you just never know, like I said, Dave may challenge him to come on his show, although it doesn't mean P will accept, but controversy always sells. I'm wondering if Dave will make any comments in reference to what Prince wrote to Jay though. lol
[Edited 5/29/09 14:08pm]

dave was a comedic tension breaker to make new art seem palatable to the mainstream, and that was a good thing. i remember when grace jones was on there plugging her movie "vamp" and they played a clip of her avant garde dance scene where she's dressed in the keith haring make-up...right in the middle of the clip, you hear dave say "okay, that's about enough of that nonsense" and he stopped the clip, and grace jones just laughed and laughed. stuff like that makes people feel okay about stuff that's beyond the vanilla, because it shows that it's okay to laugh at weird stuff yet appreciate it too. and he wasn't afraid to be seen as the square, if it helped his guest promote their work and at the same time get people to talk about that night's episode of late night. there was a really smart formula going on with that show, it's a shame it all collapsed into pap.

Agree!

Prince has been on Letterman's show at least twice. "Dolphin" and "Dinner with Delores". Why would he go back, especially since he got in bed w/ Leno? Prince doesn't need either really, but he chose to go to someone who respected him. Letterman didn't.

Yeah, he went with Leno who didn't comment on the absurdity of promoting an album with a release date of "never" (at that time, at least) or asking if he was alright after mock "committing suicide" after his performance of Dolphin.

Still, out of the two, Dave calls people out on their celebutardness (Joaquin Phoenix, anyone?). Leno rips 'em apart in his "monologue" and then kisses their ass to get 'em on the show and lob softball questions at 'em. Dave doesn't do do that - though he has softened slightly, as he demonstrated when he had Bill Hicks' mother on the show to apologize for a past incident.

Makes sense that Prince likes Leno.

Ya think Laura? If Letterman was to be replaced I would have preferred if Conan took over that show instead of Jay's time slot in L.A. Conan is hilarious and when I manage to stay up until close to 1:00 am, I try to catch his show. I kind of wish we had Conan do a 9pm show out here in NYC instead of a show close to 1 am in the morning when he had that show. At least we have SNL out here, even though it comes on Saturday nights, and is more of a comedy show, but thank goodness they bring musicians/artists to that show and we get to see them do two performances.

We shall see how it turns out for Conan and how he will be received by L.A. folks. I never used to like Dave back in the 90s, but he's changed somewhat and over the years has had some interesting guests on his show. He lost a lot of his "snubbery" he carried around for a number of years. Then again, David Letterman show is not the "end all be all" show for musicians/artists to make an appearance.

yeah, he did not pick the best moment to poke fun at Letterman although he must know about the Leno/Letterman feud

obviously he did not know that they already patched things up

plus, you could not even read his chicken scratch (on purpose?)

another odd Prince moment

song choice was odd.....nobody knows that song or cares

plus him walking up to Bria throwing a fake punch? wtf?

go Prince!!

right. the mature way to show your loyalty and friendship for those you love is to talk shit about other people.

that's like sooooo 7th grade. rolleyes

What show is Prince going to go on now? Asskissers who loft softball questions are a dying breed on late night these days.

Thanks for info on why Prince may dislike Letterman. Perhaps Letterman thought it was a witty but an innocent joke adn didn't mean any harm. I mean, this is his style.

But Prince on Arsenio Hall in 1992! Wow that was something! I remember the goosebumps!

Also in 95 at the end of Dolphin when o(+> pretended
to shot himself, fell in to Myte's arms and was dragged
ofstage by some big lookin guy. When Dave came back from the
commercial he kept saying to Paul "is he alright? Is he gonna be ok?"
and Paul was saying things like "yeah Dave he's ok, he's fine"
and Dave, laughing, mocks on with something like:
"Paul... the man was just dragged offstage and I just
want to know if he is going to be ok"
Maybe Dave cracking jokes about what surely was a serious
message P was trying to put across at the time really irked him.
Tho it was a very silly way for him to illustrate his point right? neutral

Leno's style is way closer to being a syncophant than Letterman's. Letterman is as dry and sarcastic as they come.

Being nice to a person and ass kissing are different. The same argument goes for being an asshole vs. just poking good fun at someone.

The Tonight Showdown -- Prince Zings Letterman

After playing a three night gig for Jay Leno and performing on his penultimate show, it's pretty obvious where Prince's late night loyalty lies -- but in case you're still not sure, this hand-written sign should drive the point home.

"Jay is the best. Even Paul Shafer [sic] knows."

Thanks for posting this. I've been trying to figure out what the sign said after "Jay is the best." lol I knew his Gemini playfulness wouldn't let me down. I miss the days when he'd do pranks on Leno.

He's been Dave Letterman's band leader since the beginning.

Yes, and Paul Shafer is the one who wrote "It's Raining Men" for The Weather Girls, a major "disco" hit in the 1980s,

first he wanted Donna Summer to sing this song, but sadly, (imo) she declined. wink
