PURPLE VS. DIRTY MIND

Ahhhhh, the battle of the albums.
Admittedly when I think of Prince albums battling themselves out, it almost feels like Greek gods duking it out for control of Olympus. This of course would be better than yet another Prince vs. MJ battle, which always feels kind of like watching the surviving members of the Golden Girls in a bitchslapping fight.

I've chosen two of his earlier, but contrasting albusm--Dirty Mind and Purple Rain

Dirty Mind

Which one is better? Why? What criteria are you using?

Please don't just pull a "Dave1992" and say "because my cock is golden and your pussy is mine" type of thing. I need convincing!

why did you choose these 2 albums, I wonder cuz they are so different imo, it's hard to compare them.

I heart both deeply, but if I had to choose: Purple Rain then, cuz it had the biggest influence on me, I was absolutely in love with this album when it was released back in '84 cool

DM is raw, almost demo like, and very nasty in the lyrics, the first 2 albums sounds a bit like Stevie Wonder, DM was the first with a real funky "Prince- sound",

on the other hand, PR is the ultimate Prince album, grandiose, every track is a classic, shows Prince as a master in everything, singing, playing, producing, great tour, band, and movie too.

For me: Purple Rain, but both albums are masterpieces.....

Purple Rain, because my... uhm.. because when my golden tongue starts to have a sip of your pussy juice it would even make Darling Nikki stop masturbating, because she'll want to save all her sex just for me!

Happy?

Yeah right lol

Okay, I may be a ho, but I have a heart of gold too, so:

I feel very sorry for Dirty Mind, not just because I'd always support the underdog when he's compared to something as huge and famous as Purple Rain, because every fucker knows that album and I'd like to show people that Prince is actually much much more than that (and SOTT and Planet Earth) and I really adore Dirty Mind - its light hearted, revolutionary sexiness helped me through some hard times -, but an album like Purple Rain just leaves me no choice.

Musically, it is without any doubt one of the best of his. Every song is a masterpiece on its own, a new idea to bring across certain emotions and thoughts in a breathtaking way only Prince could do it.
And even though I was born some eight years later, I kind of still feel that 1984 vibe when I listen to it and I can identify with that album a lot.

If all this wasn't enough for Purple Rain to have the upperhand, we've still got the fact that Prince (unfortunately) is Purple Rain partly, at least for many people who know him, and without its success he wouldn't have been able to produce the completely different, surprising Around The World In A Day and he wouldn't have been able to build up a somehow closer relationship to his true fans, who also knew the lines of, let's say, Uptown (just because it fits right now), which resulted in his fanbases feeling like a real unity. 'Not better, not bigger, just an alternative', remember?
I'm sure every good artist has a hardcore fanbase like Prince has, who knows every one of their songs by heart, but in Prince's case it's something special, as his music - which includes all albums, not just Purple Rain - had an influence on a whole generation.

Which means, without Purple Rain, I don't think many would appreciate albums like Dirty Mind as much as they do. For them (including me), it's a crazy little underground alternative to the big monster called Purple Rain, but it's what it is: A big, purple, perfect monster, musically stronger than Dirty Mind.

I'm totally not joking here: In some ways, I feel a little bit sorry for fans who are too young to remember the purple Rain days or the 80s.
Being a Prince fan back then generated so much excitement. You were always in the middle of some really strange rumors and the buzz around Prince was amazing. The release of a Prince album used to be a huge deal, and the rumor mills always kicked in prior to an album's release. And the fact that he was releasing them every year with lots of singles and b-sides as well was just amazing.

Though I'm older and more jaded about music now, I do sometimes wish I could feel some of that excitement again.

It may be hard for me to imagone, but as I said, the album just gives me a bit of that feeling of having been there every time I listen to it. But hey, don't feel sorry, I have witnessed the breathtaking release of Planet Earth!

That's like asking a Jackson family member if they'd like a nose job. You just know their answer is yes.

Of the 2 Dirty Mind was the better. The reason being, IMHO, is that is wasn't trying to accomplish anything. It wasn't trying to impress the masses. It was for those that got it and those that didn't...fuck 'em!

Purple Rain had something to prove. IMHO, it was intent from conception on catapulting Prince to super stardom. It succeeded and by doing so it alienated Prince and the base that truly just got it and things haven't been the same since.
I knew from the start that I loved you with all my heart.

I think they are both masterstrokes in their own right.

Purple Rain is just flawlessly paced and all the songs (excepting maybe Take Me With U) are utterly genius.

I love Dirty Mind for its restraint (30 minutes), minimalism and sheer exuberance.
There is nothing sweeter than the keyboard riffs of "Dirty Mind" and "Do It All Night", the prompt and perfectly tender "Gotta Broken Heart Again", the nasty and quick "Sister"... everything is quick, catchy, funky and just seemingly effortless.

In all, both amazing albums, and easily two of his best... But to me, Purple Rain is the more impressive achievement.

Both are among my favorite Prince-albums. Purple Rain is overall musically stronger with songs like When Doves Cry and The Beautiful Ones, but Dirty Mind has an edgier sound and a sexual honesty that I really like. Uptown and When You Were Mine are great songs. Also, Dirty Mind is his best album cover ever, portraying him like a sexual rebel.

Love both album, but to me Purple Rain went there, the music and feel of the instruments full represented Purple Rain

Dirty Mind was hot and some of the songs really made you feel like you were in his mind while thinking dirty... but I think it was still a bit safe.
the song Dirty Mind to me is hot but safe
Do It All Night is hot but safe

Sister & Head went there

Party Up is a hot dance song

Now if Lisa & Tick Tick Bang were included or replaced another song then I think Dirty Mind as an album really would have felt like the I was opening an adult magazine for the 1st time

I personally enjoy Dirty Mind more. I love the raw "basement" sound of the production, and the attitude of the lyrics (as embodied especially by Uptown).

Same thing with the respective tours. Of the pre-1987 stuff, the Dirty Mind shows are probably my favorites. Even though it wasn't a song from that album, I love performances like Why You Wanna Treat Me So Bad where he'd start a killer guitar solo at the end with: "Bitch!". Everything about that album and tour was totally raw and fresh.
