I have absolutely zero doubt that if Prince were to die young (and I certainly hope he has a long and enjoyable life) it would be claimed by some people on this site that he had been hated to death.

LOL OMG! That might be true!

I'm glad Prince has stuck around this long. I really think if he hadn't of started the WB fight and got the attention on that subject that he did, a lot of artists would not have considered being independent an option. Sure, there were people like Ani Defranco etc out there, but Prince was one of the people that really brought record independence to the forefront. Even more with exclusive deals like the Target venture.

As an example: Eric Himan, who is from my home town, is an independent artist, kind of has a John Mayer/Eric Hutchinson sort of vibe to his music. He's always been independent as far as I know, and has a half dozen disks out, and not just singles either. Full on albums. He distributes them from his hometown, controls his content, is interactive with his fan base, and even had his stuff on iTunes. He started as grass roots, unlike Prince, but he made the independent side of the record industry work for him. The list goes on of people directly or indirectly influenced by the very idealism of being a free agent.

I think its highly arrogant of ernest to dismiss people's feelings in this way. You have to assume responsibility for your actions (specfically here, ernest and his enormously artistic and humourous picture of prince dead in a coffin) and, ernest, you are intelligent enough to realise that it was going to provoke a reaction from some people. Just because you don't agree with their point of view on the subject, you shouldn't dismiss it.

Death shouldn't be taboo - we all have to deal with it at some stage...but that knowledge doesn't make it any easier. And whilst it shouldn't be taboo, or not discussed, neither should it be mocked so carelessly and with little fore or afterthought. Does it not occur to you that some may find it a challenge because they lost someone close to them recently? People's individual circumstances form their perspective on everything they deal with - you don't know what that person may have had to endure, so you shouldn't brush their reaction aside. Why should your viewpoint dictate theirs? Maybe you are lucky enough not to have experienced losing someone who means alot to you.....I suspect that if you had, you wouldn't be quite so glib.

Pictures and statements of any kind have an effect on people, whether you agree with that or not. A year ago or so, there was a massive furore globally from people who took offence at some dutch (if I remember correctly) cartoon featuring the prophet mohammed. You may not agree with the fact that a cartoon, which was comical in intent (and, perhaps, inflammatory also), should provoke such a vehement reaction...but it did and, as such, responsible action that takes in to account everyone's feelings, as much as is possible, ought to be sought. Some attempted that (public apologies made, images withdrawn etc - some felt further provocation and defence of freedom of speech were more important).

I think ernest knew full well the kind of reaction he was going to provoke with his "bit if fun" and I don't think it serves him well to now be saying those people shouldn't be so sensitive and "it's only a pic" - or am I crediting him with too much intelligence?
[Edited 5/12/09 6:58am]

No you are not crediting him with anything. You are speaking nothing but the truth Mindflux and I thank you for saying all that you did just now. Look, I am not against people talking about death and Prince. I said it before on this thread, it's going to happen sooner or later but for me and others here, seeing Prince in a coffin like that just isn't cool.

I'll be completely honest and open with you right now. My grandfather just got diagnosed with cancer in February. While he's alright at this moment, it's been hard to see my grandfather go through what he's going through and I know that death is a real possibility and it sucks so bad. I hate it, so seeing a photoshopped pic of my favorite singer like that yesterday really got me mad as hell. I stated in my last thread that I overreacted, I'm sure I may have been mixing all the stuff with my grandpa with Prince, I don't know. I just know that the pic offended me and Ernest's arrogant response to it all didn't help matters any.

I don't take myself seriously but this was just one of those things where I reacted the way that I did and I don't regret it. It was a bit much but it was real. Besides, the pic and a lot of what was said on this thread had nothing to do with what the OP had posted. It was all about celebrating Prince's music while he's still with us and not focusing on what we don't like or wish Prince had released instead of what he did release. We went FAR off base with what the OP had in mind with this thread. That's all I have to say. For now.

Oh BS, my father just died from Cancer almost five months ago, and I'm not all up in arms because of the pic. confused

So because it didn't effect and upset u that makes it ok? Do u not know how to empathize (sp) with somebody else's feelings? Why anybody showing anyone else in a coffin would think that was cute is beyond me.

If this thread's title carried a NSFW disclaimer, every orger that is up in arms about Ernest L Sewell, IV's pic would still have clicked on it.

Morbid curiosity. We all have it to some degree.

but for now, why not embrace everything that's released and enjoy it for what it is?

sitting back and enjoying the ride, even if you think it's not the best you could have, is certainly better than complaining about everything you're thinking isn't there.

you can press your nose harder against the tree-bark and cause yourself more pain, or you can step back and appreciate the forest, even if it's not the magical forest you were hoping for.

I'm going to bring this thread back what it was intended for. I am grateful for all the years of Prince music that I have. If this thread has shown me anything, it's to be grateful for what I have and I'm glad that I have all of Prince's music. Whether it's good, bad or indifferent, it all makes up Prince's history and I look forward to many more years of great music from Prince.

Strangely enough the photo looks more dignified in the coffin version. Not because of the coffin but just the color tones or something. Pretend it's not a coffin. Pretend it's some kind of 1980s Michael Jackson Kraftmatic adjustable bed. Prince looks relaxed.

part 1

i agree with the author of this thread that the music is y we all we got involved in the 1st place. yes some just care about the 80's music and if u like any of the current music, ur looked upon as dumb, don't know what music is etc etc..then on the other end, those that DO like the other music label others as stuck in the past etc...the bar has been set so high that what i have realized is that no matter what side of the fence ur on, everyone has some type of xpecations of his latest material. now this can either b a good thing or a bad thing, imo it's mostly bad. if u go searching 4 the same thing in everything in life instead of just chilling out and take the ride it will b just a loop. if i can offer just a simple word of advice, stop looking 4 quality, stop calling things filler, stop saying ur living in the past..take each song as a new xperience.

part 2

some have objected 2 a certain photo in this thread and then some say lighten up. sorry but either the mods or the creator of the photo should take it down themself.

peace
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81
