I hated that album when it came out. Now I'm just merely disappointed by the banality of most of it.

Space, Race, and Pheromone are way better than Letitgo, Papa, and Dark. And Loose! was a bonafide club hit that year.

Where are your fucking ears?

Space is one of his weakest compositions ever, Totally bland verses, lacking a chorus.

Race is prince-funk on autopilot. The kind of song he could write in his sleep.

Loose is copying what European dance-music producers were doing at least 5 years before him (dated at the time of release it is). And the composition is utterly generic.

Pheromone: how much boring you can be with 2 chords?

In my defence...

Letitgo offers nothing new, but is at least well composed aka he is actually trying to write a chorus.

The minimalistic arrangement of Papa is bleak and daring, fitting the lyrics. But i can do do without that Hendrix-like coda, a forced happy end.

Dark i see as one of his best and overlooked ballads of the nineties, Just traditional R&B kept as sober as possible.

Totally agree, but otherwise NO.

There are a few albums that are devoid of a song I love (no songs would make my homemade greatest hits), but that's not the same as disliking every song.

No.

Not even on his worst album, Rave un2 the joy fantastic. There U can find gems like Man O' War and Prettyman (actually, this last one is the song that saves the whole album in my opinion).

yeah, it just gave me the impression that he was not in a positive place at that time and that same vibe carried over into some of his other work. I appreciate the talent and effort put into all of his music, I just dig the more positive experiences - like PE wink

I guess I missed something here. My point is that just because someone doesn't like the specific albums mentioned above it doesn't mean they don't like Prince piano or Prince drum machine stuff in general.

are you serious? it's always interesting to see how oppinions differ and
what songs people like and for what reasons.

me, i'm a big fan of the entire come album and the gold experience and
all the songs that were left off both records.

for example, i think "space" is one of his best post lovesexy ballads lol
and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

I have to say "Come" and "New Power Soul" were both weak to me. Dont hate the whole cd's, but truly worth listening to very few on both. I actually just put "Come" in my car to give it another play- do this periodically to see if I missed something (that was truly genius) on my dozens of previous plays... can truly say I didnt!
I thought so little of New Power Soul I got rid of the cd and just made a mix tape/cd of songs I felt were worth keeping. I cant even recall what songs are on "New Power Soul" today and havent played that mix tape or mix cd in years! Yes, I do still have mixed tapes that I just havent had the time to bother getting onto a mixed cds.

Anyone who doesn't like Everlasting Now or Last December should not call themselves a Prince fan.

Same thing for Empty Room on C-Note.

Well, I can see you not liking "smooth jazz" Prince, but come on, those projects you listed are not bad. I could see if you had said Karmasutra was boring. confused

I do think "Come" and "New Power Soul" were periods were P just was not being true to himself and the music just seems forced, w/ no feeling. The lyrics are lame, they seem to reflect a detachtment, an attempt to be something he is not and to show a toughness and disassociation- which to me is the exact opposite of anything he has ever done otherwise.
He seemed to want to be this gangster rap type character (rap being popular then), but we all know P is no rapper!

In some ways, the New Power Sampler is a stronger piece that all three of those New Power Pack albums.

And Come is a great Cd. I like the flow of it. The whole thing is moody. There was a story about Prince calling up Michael B and Sonny and Tommy one weekend (possibly a holiday weekend), and asking "What are you guys up to?" which basically meant, "Let's record some music," because Prince was bored and had no one around. A lot of those songs were done that weekend.

Or am I totally thinking of Chaos and Disorder? I still like the COME CD.
