It's a throw away, just like Xpectation, etc was. I actually played Xpectation at a party once. I just put it on, no fanfare as to who it was or anything. People thought I had on some smooth jazz station and hated it. LOL

Xpectation and C-Note are just plain boring. zzz

Anyone who doesn't like Everlasting Now or Last December should not call themselves a Prince fan.

Same thing for Empty Room on C-Note.

Well, I can see you not liking "smooth jazz" Prince, but come on, those projects you listed are not bad. I could see if you had said Karmasutra was boring. confused

I really didn't care for Kamasutra until I attended an outdoor L4OA concert in 1997. They played the whole CD over the sound system before the show started. It sounded great on those speakers, and from then on I heard it differently. Now I like it.
it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

Yes but it is not performed by Prince per se: Elixir is absolute rubbish.

Prince performed: New Power Soul - even Wasted Kisses and the One couldn't save it from the WTF? pile.

I do think "Come" and "New Power Soul" were periods were P just was not being true to himself and the music just seems forced, w/ no feeling. The lyrics are lame, they seem to reflect a detachtment, an attempt to be something he is not and to show a toughness and disassociation- which to me is the exact opposite of anything he has ever done otherwise.
He seemed to want to be this gangster rap type character (rap being popular then), but we all know P is no rapper!

In defense of COME, it WAS a detached time for him. I mean he had his death date on the record cover for heaven's sake. He was changing his name, a step he knew would cause a major uproar within WB, the media, etc. He knew he still had another 3 years before he could be free to do what he wanted with his music. Exodus and Gold Exp. was the same march to freedom. Some of the lyrics to COME, the song, are clever. At first, I scoffed at the longer time, but then it made sense to me. It really is a journey on that song. Race, Pheromone are brother and sister, as are Dark and Space. I even love that all the songs are a single title (although we know letitgo is stretching it).

He was becoming something he wasn't before. I don't think there's a lot of gangsta rap type stuff on there. "Race" might be the closest to a "rap", but most of those vocals on the album were almost a spoken word type thing, to me.

There is no defense for NPS. It has a few little trinkets of goodness on it, but I really do feel that one is forced and not a real NPG record. It's always curious to me that when people lay out the discography, NPS ends up under Prince, whereas Goldnigga and Exodus fall under NPG albums. They're all three credited to NPG, not Prince. Weird side note there.

I don't know why people rave about "The One" (or even "Come On"). It's a weak ass song (both are really). "wasted kisses" is an odd track.

You know, I'm not really sure . . . I tried to sell it to a used CD store, and they didn't want it. This was before I had Internet (mid-to-late 90s) and I just didn't want it in my collection.

I see it as a bad side project, but I know now that there are a lot of "completist" collectors around here . . .

To me, that era is one the 3 Prince prolifically brilliant eras (the other 2 being 1985/86 and 2001/3). Come, The Gold Experience and the NPG's Exodus are milestones in his career. Underrated by most.

Curious indeed. After Crystal Ball (1998), the first record we have is The Vault - Old friends 4 sale (1999).

I like the idea of the Planet Earth album, but in reality I don't like the album all that much (if at all). I can't remember the last time I listened to it.

I agree, and I think COME is part of that prolific period. I think there's a quad set of great CDs, and you named them. Come, The Gold Experience, Exodus, and I toss in Chaos and Disorder too.

Yeah, but that was a WB contract thing (much like Chaos was). It was nice to have those songs in full though, but the altered OF4S made it a bit cheap. In reality, if we thought of albums Prince endorsed, the next one would have been Rave, not Vault. But it's semantics really, we have both. I love the mid 90's period, it's second only to the 82-87 period. I'm not thrilled w/ the 00's. It's been a bummer decade for me, although it could be argued that Prince put out more music in the 00's than any other decade. I'm too tired to count though. haha

Mine would be a bit more narrow. I'd go from The Hits - Chaos. Almost the same span, just a shift to a bit earlier.

In reality, if Prince had retired, it should have been when Chaos came out. I would have been more than happy with that whole catalog.

I'd argue N.E.W.S., Karma Sutra, and Xpectations are his most underrated. For some reason, if Prince isn't singing, people kinda tune out. Yet, these albums demonstrate his arrangement capabilities to vocalize emotions through the power of instruments.
