2elijah said: tuztones said: Nice innerview by TAVIS but I was a bit stunned by PRINCE'S reaction to PRESIDENT OBAMA. I understand that as a JAHOVAH WITNESS Prince does not vote and that is cool.....but I felt that PRINCE'S reaction to him was a bit off. Our new PRESIDENT is working very hard on tackling our everyday issues concerning the economy not to mention a whole lot of other things. Isn't PRINCE working on tackling the world that we live in just as well as our new PRESIDENT? I truly do not understand PRINCE'S reaction to him. He acted almost like he could not be bothered with PRESIDENT OBAMA. Both are working to making a better world. One with his lyric's and music and the other with taking on everyday situations at the WHITE HOUSE and all around the country. Both have GLOBAL matters to take on.
I was utterly stunned by PRINCE'S reaction to our PRESIDENT and a bit concerned. Ok.....you don't want to celebrate holidays like Christmas, you choose not to vote, and you have a different vision concerning politic's and religion, but the reaction that PRINCE had was uncalled for. Sorry PRINCE.....PRESIDENT OBAMA is trying to spread and uplift love and power throughout our nation just like you so there was no reason to have the reaction you had when the discussion of our new PRESIDENT came up. Isn't it all about UNITY????? You are both on the same page there PRINCE. Where was the conversation about the new 3 cd set and how he got in with TARGET? How about a conversation concerning the current sales status since it is being sold only with one outlet other than in joining in on the website. STAY TUNED UNTIL TOMORROW FOR PART 2 of this innerview. Peace.....Nicky Tuzio e-mail: tuztones@optimum.net Not everyone voted for President Obama. Nowhere in his interview did Prince insult President Obama or said anything disrespectful about him. He stated how he felt about the presidency in this country period and went into discussing other areas of that. His feelings about President Obama, was not the only issue discussed. He also discussed some of the lyrics in his song "Dreamer". Which is what I was hoping he did during that interview, although Tavis stated he had 3 of Prince's songs that he wanted to ask him about the lyrics, which will be discussed in part 2 tonight. For the song "Dreamer", Prince spoke of Dick Gregory, activist/author from the 60s, who was/is one of his mentors and friends, and mentioned that he was the inspiration for writing "Dreamer". Prince talked about the "Chemtrails" issue. Prince stated how after listening to Mr. Gregory speak at one of "State of the Black Union" (SOBU) conferences about "chemtrails", and how it was Mr. Gregory, who is a friend of Prince, is responsible for his awareness on the issue of "chemtrails." Only thing is I don't recall Prince mentioning the book title of Mr. Gregory's book, in which I wish he did, but he did suggest that people go over to Dick Gregory's site and check it out, so I guess that's what I will be doing, checking out Mr. Gregory's site. Tavis also asked Prince who his mentors were throughout his life, and Prince mentioned the late boxer, Jack Johnson, as one of his mentors based on Mr. Johnson's strength and perseverance as a boxer. He stated that during Mr. Johnson's time, and during those tumultous times, that no matter how many times Mr. Johnson, as a boxer was knocked down, he still got up, and he admired Mr. Johnson basically for his strength and perseverance. On the subject of "critcism", Prince basically stated that he doesn't mind "constructive criticism" especially when it is regarding his music, especially when it comes from those who are your loved ones or friends, as constructive critism is done out of love, and advice given to help one improve either with self or specific areas of interest, like his music. He mentioned Miles Davis as one of his friends who gave him constructive criticism regarding his music, but yes, Prince did say the other kind of criticism, the kind done out of malice, with a twist of sarcasm and ill-will, that comes from those those who don't really know him or are his supposed friends does hurt. In my opinion, in discussing the latter, apparently the criticism he speaks of that seems to hurt him or any of us, is the kind of criticism that is definitely not from an inspirational or improvement standpoint, when one gives a friend some advice on how they can improve either with self or some other specific area of interest, but moreso out of malice and disrespect. He discussed being epilectic until the age of 7, which is when he stopped having seizures. He discussed how he felt about the "State of the Black Union" Conference, and how he's had an interest in many of the issues discussed in the conference, and also mentioned Dick Gregory and Cornel West and the many talks they've had when he gets together with them, including Tavis to discuss those issues. There was a lot more said on that, but I'll wait for someone else to mention it. All I know is during the discussion, Prince apparently has a lot of concern for the black community as well or I doubt he would partake in the SOBU discussions with his friends mentioned in this post. In closing I found the interview interesting and Prince opened up quite a bit about himself and of his concerns/interests about other issues. Part II continues tonight, and I can't wait to see what else he has to say. duplicate text edit [Edited 4/28/09 9:19am] Wow 2elijah u r so on point. U did not miss anything. I totally enjoyable every moment of it and looking forward 2 part 2 Thanks, appreciate it, but it really doesn't need to be a sticky, since it's in a stickified thread already. I was just giving a quick take on it, although it's a long post, but I was trying to remember all that was said in the interview, in case some members didn't get to see it or just didn't or don't have access. I didn't realize until after I posted, that other members were/are discussing last night's interview in the other "Tavis show details" thread in this forum. I saw the sticky thread and posted my take on it here. By the way towards the end of the interview, Prince became very delighted with a smile when Tavis mentioned Bria being interviewd on his show as well. [Edited 4/28/09 11:44am]

My local PBS had a server failure about 10 mins into the program. So I was told that PBSWorld reruns the Tavis programs the following day. Luckily I have that station in my cable package and both segments will re-air tomorrow morning. The order will be reversed though, so the one with Bria will be first & Prince's second.

I'll put a more comprehensive reply after tonight. I'd already started my set of comments and feedback and whatever else I got from the interview.
I already got a lot and my conclusion was: I could do this all this time listening to Prince talk about just about anything cuz it seems to be coming more straight-forward than in his music You'd think this means you don't have to think as much, but my mind was experiencing brief, tiny explosions just because I was getting so much out of it and trying to figure out what to take from it had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

popgodazipa said: The most interesting and insightful part of the interview was when Prince spoke about criticism. He pretty much stated that he's good with it as long as it offers something and doesn't just seek to belittle and degrade based on personality or the writers' lack of creativity. He actually even admitted that some of the things his heard was actually hurtful. Should be required viewing to all on the org... judge not less thee be judged.
It made me think of this constructively critique we did on planet earth some months ago... remember I said to forego the name calling as it only offends the artist but does not help in improvement. Maybe Prince does visit the org. Hi Prince http://prince.org/msg/7/298978 [Edited 4/28/09 12:02pm]

there are moments I listen to him and go and other times I go and time I am left and then and times I learn something and am challenged and go and I remember why it is I have followed his career so long. He's nothing like me and I find it fun and just wanna him and then there's the music

Tavis usually has all his shows available for full view online, the next day after they're aired the night prior. Considering how few times in the last 30 Years PRINCE has actually spoken for an interview.. I get excited when it happens.
But the Tavis interview reveals a Prince personality I really prefer not to see. Praises of how PRINCE is just LOVE personified from Tavis, yet there is still such a THEM vs. US mentality the PURPLE man is going through. The state of the black union/Dick Gregory acting like the drunk & not so there UNCLE at a family cookout. It's all such a damn shame. A 75 year old man who seen WAY TOO much injustice in ONE LIFE TIME should not be PRINCE'S MUSE! Prince, I love ya man.. but fa reel.. showing white folk the blackunion on YOUTUBE ain't your calling. LOVE4ONEANOTHER is all but faded away. This is the constructive critism you so fondly crave..so HERE u go. LetItGo..!!! A Black Man is president.. the world has changed. MAYBE not as MUCH as we wished but definity as much as it probably could in 40 some odd years. The first lady comes from the ancestors of slaves..and you up on PBS talking about the Presidents that came before AMERICA WAS AMERICA.. lol.. give us a f***in break!!!! I HOPE that you break free from the larry grahams and dick gregory's of this world.. and let all that great music come thru AGAIN that ONLY can come from a history of an abusive father and a bully'd childhood - to a POPLIFE PRINCE PEACE&BWILD

The SOBU conference was very informative and touched on various social/political/economic issues/social ills, etc., regarding not only the Black community in America, but other Black communities around the world. It was aired live on the CSPAN channel in its entirety. It dealt with everything from economics, education, employment, empowerment, crime within, raising awareness on health-related issues and family issues, etc., and included discussions on holding our elected officials accountable for the positions they were elected for by the citizens, and educating citizens in how to get their elected officials involved with finding ways to deal with many of the social/economic issues that plague our communities. It was about "awareness" of all these issues and bringing it to the table, so-to-speak. It's about "concern" about a community. which I don't feel bringing scholars, elected officials, and other professional and members of many of these communities together is a waste of time. As far as Dick Gregory the man was a fighter against injustices back in the mid 60s/early 70s and admired by many. Prince, I guess, gave his take on him as a personal friend, and in relation to him being the inspiration behind the song "Dreamer", that's all. [Edited 4/28/09 13:49pm]

Tavis, why all the asskissing man? Just interview the guy, Jesus.
Act like he is some guy you just met--no more slobbering on the hambone. Prince said some good things, but mostly said some really loony stuff as well. All that crazy shit about Chemtrails--you all know what that is about, right? Conspiracy theorists believe that the government spray chemicals in the black community so that blacks will kill each other. It's some plot to destroy the black race. If Prince believes that he is beyond nuts. There is zero evidence to support any of it, beyond what one man says. Where's your scientific evidence, Dick? Sure, inner cities tend to have more toxic waste dumps and pollution--why not stick with that, Prince? So he doesn't believe in the Separation of church and state? Hey, P, if you want to live in Iran you are welcome to. We are a secular country. Live with that fact or move. "Barack Obama means well." A black man becomes President and that's all you can say? You're as bad as the tea party idiots. Obama is not our saviour, but he deserves our respect. Now he's Jack Johnson? P, Johnson had racist thugs call him nigger and pledge to hang him from the highest tree. I doubt a rich dude as yourself has that issue. He takes criticism well? Does he smoke dope or do I? This guy is the single most anti-critical human in artistic history. He sure has no problem dissing others, especially when they curse. "They need to be critical, but in love." How can I love someone I don't even know? My criticism is in love, because hard honesty is how love stays real. Bullshitting is not love. "there were 8 Presidents before Washington." Huh? Really?? Those JW's need to stop reading comic books as history text. Sheesh. lol All you others say Hell Yea!!
