This was the first Prince album I ever bought (I even remember the date; Dec 17, 1992), so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I abdicated the throne in Ithaca, but now I am...

Fantastic. Outrageously complicated, but somehow controlled and pointed.
It's the only P album IMO, where he displays everything he's got up his sleeve. P at the peak of his powers.

I just listened to this two nights ago, and went through COME, Exodus, and TGE last night. SUCH a great time period. If people ever wanted him to repeat his prolific and creative mid 80's period, well....he did it from about 1993 until 1996. Enjoy.

I was listening to it over a week ago... so many good songs here and together, they represent the many dualities that Prince uses in his music.
I'm just gonna leave it at that cuz if I don't, I'll be writing forever its become one of my favorites to say the least had 2 run away... pride was 2 strong. It started raining, baby, the birds were gone

No...no, it isn't.
Any brilliance that might have been had in that album was sucked away by Tony M. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

So you consider, Arrogance, the Flow, Segues, Three chains of gold, The sacrifice of victor his best songs
I thiunk the album is ok rather than good. I like The Continental, Blue Light, Melt with You, Damn U, Pretty Baby, and Sexy MF I just love the Morning papers, Seven (The only song that sounded like a TOp40 single, and it was a hit at #6) and Love 2 the 9s, but the rest is excreable including the songs at the top. Not his worst or even a bad album, but not his best either. Its a solid 5.5/10 [Edited 4/24/09 20:46pm] So what are u going 2 do? R u just gonna sit there and watch? I'm not gonna stop until the war is over. Its gonna take a long time

i agree some good tracks on the album but not my favorite... maybe 5 out of 10 for me....Sexy MF, My name is Prince, Damn U, Melt with U, were the highlights for sure... oddly enough and most will probably disagre but The Gold Experience is one of my favorite Prince Albums...at least in my top 3

'and god created woman,' '3 chains of gold,' and 'the sacrifice of victor' as a sequence is among his best work, yes. [Edited 4/24/09 20:53pm] it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

I love the sequence of "love 2 the 9's", "The Morning Papers", "The Max", "Blue Light", "I wanna Melt wit U" and "Sweet Baby".

How in hell can one be short-sighted about an album that was released almost 20 years ago? We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

You've chosen one small part that apparently makes the whole album take a nose dive. Short sighted. In your opinion. I think there is some very nice songwriting on the album. But there is at least one song that could have been great (Love 2 the 9s) that was absolutely ruined by the utter nonsense that commences at 2:14. Damn U is great until 4:09 - at which point it falls prey to that nonsensical "rock opera" bullshit that is threaded throughout. Out of that entire album, I'd say only three songs - The Morning Papers, And God Created Woman and Blue Light - are unabashedly delightful. 3 Chains is an overwrought ripoff of Bohemian Rhapsody. I bought this album the day it was released and have listened to it any number of times since. I think my criticism is valid - and I bow to no one who thinks their opinion is superior to mine. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

for many people, prince's music after 1995 (or after 1988) is their 'tony m.' it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

so either you are a hater, or nobody is. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

Agreed... completely brilliant. This is one of the few Prince albums that I completely enjoy from beginning to end without reservation.

Of course it's my opinion. Sorry if I gave the impression I was omnipotent. Up until this post I agreed with you that it would indeed be difficult to be short sighted about an album released almost 20 years ago. But it seems you've made liars of us both. Oh, and good for you for refusing to bow. Very inspiring. Almost sways the whole argument. For clarity's sake, this is my opinion. (should I bold certain parts to make it easier in future?) (...It's also my opinion that you need to re-listen to Bohemian Rhapsody.)
