i'm glad the full segues weren't included on the album. i like the storyline much better as a vague sketch.

I agree. If all of those segues had been included,it would have messed up the flow of the album.

This was the album where Prince lets loose from his Lovesexy piety that ran from '88 to '91. During that period his sound was sterile, plastic, hatched in a vacuum. With the Symbol album, he goes spastic. The vocal delivery on the opening track is gutteral, like he's foaming at the mouth. And the songs are prolix, meandering beasts, bent out of shape and bursting at the seams. My guess is, he had a very serious boner for Mayte and it pulled him out of his ascetic cave. He blew his creative wad with Symbol. And predictably, the next album is a bit of a downer. Come is dark and moody and emo. Post-coital emptiness.

I think Lotusflow3r represents the same sort of busting out as Symbol, this time from his JW strictures. So I predict P's next album, in 2010 or 2011, will be a "Come"-like letdown: A morose, gloomy thing.

I agree with this. The music on 'Love Symbol' is more vibrant, more louder and more relentless than the two albums that preceded it ('GB' and 'D&P').It was as if Prince was truly inspired again, with a a whole new purpose and a story that he wanted to tell.I remember thinking that this album would be a hard act to follow and sure enough,'Come' was a letdown. It has a few good songs, but it's not nearly as powerful as 'Love Symbol'.

WOW eek That makes me.., er, you old... lol

Smooches;)

Ummmm...the date an album released is just a fact. If it makes anyone old, it'd be Prince. confuse

Like most products, albums date. Very few remain timeless. We have some comedy that never ages and other that finds itself bath-chair bound in no time at all. Some songs are truly timeless and pinpointing their age is often very difficult. One album I can think of that to me is ageless is Dark Side of the Moon.

Anyway, there are some great tracks on Symbol. Arrogance and The Flow are the only two duffers.

I must admit that I actually disagree with this. The album flows much better
WITH the segues. However, I don't think the segues were very good, mainly
due to the voice actors (with the exception of Kirsty Alley) being too deadpan
and reading-from-a-script sounding. So when they were removed (which I
agree was the right decision) I think that the running order of the album
should've been adjusted slightly to make it flow better.

What would your adjusted tracklist be, Boris?

I'm sorry, I overreacted, listened to it again today, this album HAS actually aged well with time. Its incredibly funky and some of the songs are really well written. Three Chains O Gold is actually entertaining.

I stand corrected "aow"

it's right up there for me, and i'm a solid '80s prince' guy. i've always thought it was a really good summation of his career to date, perpetrated in a fittingly off the wall, prince-like manner.

i've been having a thought lately. several times over the years, prince has seemed to try to fit his love interests into an abstract narrative of his female counterpart. i think it's interesting that he has borrowed melodic lines (and sometimes entire songs) from the material he originally worked on with anna fantastic for later projects that were built around his later girlfriends. carmen electra's album and 'o(+>' (which prince claimed was inspired by mayte) both dip into this material. mayte recorded a couple of songs that date from around this period as well. to my mind, 'elixir' revives some of the slick production last heard from prince on 'o(+>.'
it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

It would have made a good NPG album, instead of Goldnigga.
