"Best ________ in years" threads Why is it that with each new Prince album there is a proliferation of "best _____ in years" threads? Without fail, there is always some thread that proclaims Prince's best ballad in years, best melody in years, best studio recording in years, etc. What is the fixation with adding the "in years" phrase to these statements? Why don't folks just say, I like this ballad, or I like this melody, etc. Just wondering. perfection is a fallacy of the imagination...

I think it's more about the excitement of a new album, a new ballad, etc. Time is the true mother of the truth. Because in a couple of years, most of those raves turn into "Oh, I forgot about that one." Interest wains, which is oddly similar to Prince's interest in his own projects.

it's the same reason people can't stop themselves from talking about how much better prince is than everything else on the radio, or current musicians, etc.
face it: there is no positive without negative. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

There's a lot of excitement when a new album arrives and if someone really likes the album or a certain song it's natural to proclaim that it's the best in years. Also, as ernestsewell pointed out "time is the true mother of the truth": Sometimes the "best in years" comparison is a placebo effect that will wear off in time. When it comes to Colonized Mind I would say that after having listened to it many times it's one of his best in years. I don't say "one of" just to be cautious, but because there are equally impressive tracks like Future Baby Mama, but Colonized Mind is a very impressive track.

Because people have varying opinions and when those people feel that a certain song off of a certain album is the best in years, they probably really feel that it is...to them. -you ain't funky at all, you just a little ol' prude!
