Thanks in advance The best thing is to check your local listings and also your local PBS website. In Minneapolis, it's on early today with Tracy Ulman and later today (really 4:30am tomorrow) with Prince. It's then repeated a few hours later and followed by the Prince/Bria interview again at 4:30am. It's also not on the main PBS station, but a second tier of PBS. Ya gotta do some homework on this friggin' show. If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I love when P interviews w/Tavis. They are good, good friends from years back and it makes for a more true and informative chat with such respect between them. Thanks for the info. PRINCE IS UNFUKWITABLE!!

NO ONE stuck by him back in the middle 90s they were all to scared of losing their deals to rise up and speak up. Every last artist at that time KNEW exactly what PRINCE was talking about and they stood by and called him crazy and NOW they are the ones still signed making ZERO and not owning shit. No one realizes what PRINCE sacrificed to get out of his WB deal, alot of the money he signed for in 92 he gave back, he funded himself at that time, created in his own studios and paid for it all from his own pocket. The thing with PRINCE that no one gets is that prince makes it and then funnels it right back into the creation. Sure he owns a studio, a house and things like that, but compared to the FOOLS out there now, selling a zillion ringtones and then buying 3 cars, those assholes are gonna be broke in a month.
Nice! Good point. I'm afraid you're wrong. George Michael was the first to stand up for these kinds of artists rights, and he took it further: He actually took Sony to court to get out of his deal. And where do you get the idea that Prince gave back anything? Most of it never changed hands in the first place, being tied to future sales figures, projects that never happened and some serious inflation in the first place.

The monetary figures were always tentative and based on sales. What wasn't in question was the album contract - he still owed WB so many albums, regardless of sales.

Just got through watching Part I of the Tavis interview -- I loved it! Prince had some really interesting things to say on a variety of subjects. RIP, mom. I will forever miss and love you.

or so we assume. we're working with a whole set of slightly conflicting assumptions here:
- what was reported in the press - what we assume, correctly - what we assume, incorrectly all we know for sure is what was reported in the press. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

Yup. I have it in my head (though I may be wrong on the figures) that he was supposed to sell 5 million of each album in order to receive $10 million for the next. Se7en said: The monetary figures were always tentative and based on sales. What wasn't in question was the album contract - he still owed WB so many albums, regardless of sales. No one's said otherwise, but others in this thread have argued that Prince gave back or "sacrificied" money by waging his war against WB, a claim that isn't accurate, given that he hadn't yet earned that money, and most likely wouldn't have anyway.

what a load of crap...prince is so full of shit. i don't know how he can keep a straight face while he's saying half that stuff.
The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. The musical notes taken out of a hat. The glass. The toy shotgun painting. The things he found. Therefore, everything seen–every object, that is, plus the process of looking at it–is a Duchamp.

it was prince's p.r. people who hyped the "$108 million" figure anyway. even at the time, some voices from within wb quietly tut-tutted the claim. it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

Indeed they did. I'm sure there were other details fudged as well, but Prince's people went out of their way to make it seem as though the $10 million figure was guaranteed. That alone would have totaled $60 of the reported $108. There was also supposedly going to money for a second label venture, which again was likely reported at being the maximum amount Warner was offering. In reality, that funding was likely due to be spread out over a number of years and tied to performance. For all the fudging, I don't blame Prince's oraganisation for making those claims: the early 90s was the age of the mega deal, with Michael Jackson, Madonna and the Stones all announcing simiarlily ludicrious (and likely also exaggerated) contracts at around the same time. WTF is he talking about 8 presidents before George Washington? I cringe when he starts the religion babble, it makes him sound really, really stupid. The check. The string he dropped. The Mona Lisa. Don't see what that has to with religion exactly (though I hate that shit too), but in this case, he's got some facts to back him: There were 8 different men who served as the President of the Continental Congress before the ratification of the Consitution. There are many historians who argue that they should be counted as the first Presidents of the USA, despite the fact that country technically didn't exist yet. So, there you go. Not quite as crazy as some of the other claims he's made over the years.
