Nice to hear him talking about Andre Cymone and how he became driven to succeed. Bad to hear him complaining about record sales and the industry that has made him 100's of millions of dollars. 99.99999% of human beings to ever live on this planet has never had it so good, so why is he so miserable all the time?

My initial thought was that he made mention of soundscan because of the ??? surrounding Lotusflow3r sales.
Listenin to him I learned something new about the sales of albums.
Damn!...the music industry disbelief
With regards to him being miserable all the time...jus cause he said wat he said about record sales, that means he's miserable all the time?
Dude just doesn't like the shit that's happenin and when one understands the runnings of the industry, I don't like it either! hmph!

Every time I look @ the back of the CD I think of how pissed P would be about that. Then I think, maybe he doesn't know? Would you want to be the lucky employee to break it to him?!

He certainly isn't bringing it up because he needs the money - please??
Its about the principle, put bluntly why should his talent and his talent alone be making other people rich?? Exactly what have they done to deserve that money,
nothing right? But that's what's basicly happening, they're not being honest with the figures so they can skim off the top!! It's a joke that they've gotten away with it for so long - maybe things will change now that P has outed them, people listen to Prince, he's know's what he's about and people respect that, good for him, he's not afraid of the big guns. They should watch their backs in future!!! cool

If, as some say, Prince is using interviews like this to "educate" others about the evil ways of the business, he could be a little more pedagogic, and not merely discuss in terms of his OWN problems. I don't think everyone, especially non-hardcore Prince fans, would agree that educating others is foremost on Prince's agenda. There are other ways to go about that. However, my main point is that this obsession or preoccupation with the industry, sales, etc. clearly has distracted Prince from making truly inspired music and evolving as an artist. That's the sad part for me - I've been a loyal follower since 1983.

The solution is simple: Press and release his own physical CDs through NPG Records or go fully digital. Track the sales himslef and stop whinin' about being ripped off. His frustration is rooted in the fact that his music sells relatively poor and he needs a scapegoat.

I, too, think P's music would be "better" (a VERY relative term) if he didn't have to worry about how he was being cheated, but come on people, if you were in his shoes, you'd want to quadruple-check sales records for everything you put out, too. He doesn't do anything else; he has no side-job. Let him go about the business of keeping track of big business. In the meantime, coming from a fan since 1980, I don't think he has been "distracted" in any kind of major way. I mean, I'd put up "A Colonized Mind" against any song by any artist out there, and what's more, I would put it up against, say, "Guitar," and I'd put Ol' Skool Company up against, say, "Head." Give the guy a break. I mean, if Jimi Hendrix had lived into his fifties or sixties, there's no telling what kind of music he would have made. We know, from what Eric Clapton has said, that Hendrix was talking about heading in a totally different direction near the time of his death. I'm sure people wouldn't have held him in such high regard as they do now. What a bitch: the guy had to die for people to continue to immortalize him. It would interesting to see what would happen if, God forbid, Prince were to die. Who among us would cherish his more recent CD's????? I know I would.

Imago

god, do I have mixed feelings on the subject of Prince's beef with Warners lol

First of all, whether Prince is being selfish or not isn't too much of a concern of mine. There isn't a single Prince release that I couldn't get for free on the Internet, so if I felt he was ripping me off, I'd rip him off just as easy if I wanted.
But, I pay for his albums. I pretty much buy whatever he releases minus the ridiculous 21 nights vanity photobook and of course the Opus. But fact of the matter is, I still support him financially as an artist.

My problem is not that I think Prince is wrong bout being ripped off. The dude got ripped the hell off--All artists get screwed that way. It's a business like any other isn't it? Your companies that all of you work for are ripping you off. They're ripping their customers off. That shirt you bought at the Gap required some 15 year old girl in Saipan to sew it, working 15 hour days at slave wages. Everyone is getting ripped the fuck off.
Prince is absolutely correct about this.

I guess where I don't sympathize with Prince is that regardless of what his positions are with the music industry, he is first and foremost a musician--and artist. I would much rather hear about how he created this or that song than about his plight against WB. I'd much rather see him release the 4 or 5 albums a year he's capable of than wait a couple years between the albums for so-so albums he could belch in his sleep.
Prince is capable of being the artist all other artists envy. There's no reason why Justin Timberlake shouldn't be too afraid to diss him in a song. There's no reason why MJ shouldn't just give up calling himself that ridiculous "king of pop" title knowing Prince is the true king of pop.
Prince is , and always will be (at least in my lifetime), and unrivaled genius. What he isn't is a great spokesperson for religion, political views, or the music business. Every time he opens his mouth about those subjects, it's like reading one of pplrain's pointless threads....tedius.

But on the flip side, his constant championing of artists rights and the unfair system of the music industry may be very important--who knows. I mean, if all those angry fags had not fought back rudely during the stonewall riots, the gay rights movement would not be anywhere near where it is now. Sometimes, being cordial, polite, and well liked might as well be like waving a white flag.

Who knows. Prince may be playing an unpopular hand. But one that pays off for everyone. He's pulled off some crazy shit in his day--I wouldn't put this past him.shrug

Did he actually answer interview questions with straight answers this time though? lol
He annoys the shit out of me when he pulls the "the spirit came 2 me in a dream about daffodils" bullshit. lol

Jesus dude is discussing the sales of his past recordings and what is an ongoing problem in the industry for other artist. It should be obvious that he is not going to have money trouble with Lotus because he received a big chunk of money from Target. Get a fucking clue.

In addtion, P is over 50 his records are not going to sell well due to lack of radio airplay.

He has been putting out music and touring since the WB thing started so he has not been distracted and he does talk to other artist about what is going on as he has mentioned this many times.

And yet you have act like AC/DC and the Eagles signing exclusive deals with Wal-Mart and still managing to go double platinum despite no airplay. wink

No age is reality. P is not AC/DC or the Eagles he has never been looked at as a rock act. Rock acts have longevity when it comes to sales. Pop and RnB artist don't have a history of continuing to sale millions of records into their 50's.

You do not have a Pop/RnB cd like "The Wall" which stayed on the Billboard top 200 chart for 15 years

In addtion, AC/DC and the Eagles are not pissing off radio and the music industry with critical comments.

Considering all the hate P throws at radio and the music industry he is lucking out to sell 250,000.00 copies which today is considered successful.

This Lotus project is the best stuff he has done in a long ass time and he should be proud of the positive response he has received sales wise.

It will be interesting to see if the CD set has any legs beyond this month.
But an artist of his stature should be moving more units even in a down economy. It's a good thing the smart folks at Target are using 'Lotusflow3r' as a loss leader.

What people fail to realize is that PRINCE was the first "mainstreamer" to take this plight on his own shoulders. NO ONE stuck by him back in the middle 90s they were all to scared of losing their deals to rise up and speak up. Every last artist at that time KNEW exactly what PRINCE was talking about and they stood by and called him crazy and NOW they are the ones still signed making ZERO and not owning shit. No one realizes what PRINCE sacrificed to get out of his WB deal, alot of the money he signed for in 92 he gave back, he funded himself at that time, created in his own studios and paid for it all from his own pocket. The thing with PRINCE that no one gets is that prince makes it and then funnels it right back into the creation. Sure he owns a studio, a house and things like that, but compared to the FOOLS out there now, selling a zillion ringtones and then buying 3 cars, those assholes are gonna be broke in a month.
