That Chris Rock thing on VH1 didn't happen until 1998, if memory serves (at least that's when I saw it).

No, the Chris Rock interview happened in February, 1997. Prince was the "VH1 artist of the month" that month and the "Somebody's Somebody" video had just came out. I remember it all like it was yesterday. I was dating this girl, Heather, and we had just gotten the Emancipation promotional stuff, too. Ah, memory's.

Sorry, went way off topic. lol
Anyway, the new Tavis Smiley interview looks to be great.

I remember the Artist of the Month now. Feb of 1997 wasn't a good time for me with television, but I'm glad it I caught it much later. It must have rerun in late 1998, because I was at my boyfriend's parents and recorded it there. It was winter, and probably Christmas week.

"Somebody's Somebody" was out in the summer of 1997. I lived in MPLS at the time and worked at Record Town in the Mall of America. That video was on one of the video tapes we got to play in the store over the TVs. I later took the tape once we got a newer tape; just so I could have the video.

By the way, I have that Emancipation mobile. I had two, but sent one to a friend (it was faded, I kept the better one).

First interview I've ever watched of his. Calm, collected and giving thought to his replies. I must say I'm impressed. Just why can't he learn to talk to us like that? An explanation of his choices. Communication is key to all things. Leave people in the dark with no answers and they start to create their own.

Man I wish he and Michael Parkinson would sit down and chat for an hour or so. Clever questions posed with consideration and respect for the guest. That is what is so often missing from tv hosts.

So he did an interview after all...! biggrin It's really nice. He sound so down-to-earth. Like he still belong to us "little people" who always have to try to fight the "big guys" that want to bring us down, and that fame has not changed who he really is inside. I don't belive it's about the money when he speaks about the record-companies. It's about trust and honesty. I'm really looking forward to see the entire interview. biggrin He looks very good in those glasses! Like a familymember of mine. Both my mum and sis wear those kind. wink I'm sure Bria will do fine, aswell. She must be really secure to do an interview. I'm sure Prince has found a matching partner in her. She probably is more woman than a girl(like the others).

As I don't know enough about the interviewers in the US, I can't comment on them, but I'd love to see this happen.

A little UK promotion of Lotusflow3r by going on Jools Holland for a night, tearing the place up as only Prince can, then a one-off special with Parky coming out of retirement to interview someone he must have had an interest in.

We can but dream.....
So look into the mirror, do u recognise some1? Is it who u always hoped u would become, when u were young?

Yeah, they replayed it a lot in 1997 and 1998.

"Somebody's Somebody" was out in the summer of 1997. I lived in MPLS at the time and worked at Record Town in the Mall of America. That video was on one of the video tapes we got to play in the store over the TVs. I later took the tape once we got a newer tape; just so I could have the video.

The "Somebody's Somebody" video came out in February 1997, The "Holy River" video came out in March 1997 and the "Face Down" video came out in June 1997. And the Jam of the Year tour started in July 1997, too, and me and Heather saw him in September 1997 when the tour came to Portland, Oregon. This isn't all just from my memory. The Uptown magazines verify the dates.

By the way, I have that Emancipation mobile. I had two, but sent one to a friend (it was faded, I kept the better one).

Cool. I still have mine, I don't have it hanging up anymore though.
Goodnight, sweet Prince.

The record industry does NOT like this type of truth. Prince better watch his back.

Prince ain't part of the conglomerate that is the record business. Besides, WB tried to sink him long ago, and he's still here.

Bigger picture.....

His surroundings and circumstances were different too. 1997 saw him having a bit liberation from WB, and he was definitely celebrating that, and promoting Emancipation for a year or more.

And nowadays he's still free from any record label contracts, right ? So why is he not so fly like was at the Chis Rock interview. He once again was extremely shy and insecure.
Now he's older, more relaxed, sure of himself even more, and he's on a TV set.

He is not half as secure than he was at the Chris Rock interview. That's my point. And I'm asking why.

Another good interview was the one with Kurt Loder.

Nothing to laugh about record company’s hide the profits of albums and cd all the time. They simply do not show the real numbers to the artist so they do not have to pay the artist the contracted royalty rate. If you don’t believe look up some of things that Tom Petty had to say about his long ordeal to try a get a proper accounting of his record sales.
He never received any information from the record company and settled with them for an undisclosed fee.

i actually think his points on the industry are good ones, but he missed his real opportunity during the "Slave" era. Instead of walking around with that he should have been talking like this. might have helped some other artists to hear it straight like that from him. Especially since that industry is pretty passé now.

nod

I heard a lot of talk about $, and not a lot about his art.

confused

Perhaps when we see it in context, it will come across in a different light. But yeah I felt the same. And he really needs to eat some fried chicken.

I hope he speaks the actual truth in both of these interviews with no sugar coating of the issues he feels strongly about because it'll be a waste of time. I mean he's 50 years old, got millions of fans worldwide that will stick by him no matter what, has an abundance of "friends" in the industry and the best lawyers money can buy...what has he got to loose? I think it's about time! The mystery thing and "riddle me this" type of speech when it comes to his personal beliefs is tired and he needs to give it a rest. He should speak his truth and not be afraid to open up about his feelings on whatever subject Tavis throws at him.

The last Tavis Smiley Interview was one of the best interviews he's had to date..let's see whether or not he delivers in these or beats around the bush.

Simple: Barcode number in states = sale 4 Prince
A different barcode in a different country = revenue 4 record company, and no sale 4 Prince. Get it?

Yes,

but i don't really see why he can't make some deal overseas anyhow.
But it is of course also OK to once again distribute it through a newspaper or so. That would make him more money than his current deal (wich is non existent)
