In the context of the song, Prince doesn't seem to be saying gay is a bad thing, just that he's being declined by a chick, so obviously she must not like dudes or she's on dope.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

I feel very bad for kids when it comes to peer pressure and bulling.
BUT it is the PARENT'S responsibility to fully education their children.

If this child was constantly being bullied, what where the parents doing to stop this? Was this child able to speak freely to his parents about this? some parents don't have an open door policy with their children and this is sad.
Take the lyric any way you want. If you find it negative, skip the song. There is ALOT worse out there...
Say it's just a dream...
U open up ur eyes and come 2 realize
u simply imagined this
So u lean over and give her a kiss
Here on earth, here on earth,
with u it's not so bad
Here on earth, here on earth
eye don't feel so sad
Stay right here

It's a corny line driven by a hetero male ego that can fathom any reason (other than homosexuality and/or drug use) why a woman wold not be into him.

Prince articulated this much better in "Bambi."
"That...magic, the start of something revolutionary-the Minneapolis Sound, we should cherish it and not punish prince for not being able to replicate it."-Dreamshaman32

The parents could have had a completely open policy with the child but that still doesn't necessarilly mean the kid will talk to them. It may have been their fault but it's wrong to automatically assume it. Maybe the kid didn't have the words to properly express the magnitude of the situation.
RIP sad

Exactly!!!!!
yeahthat
I have heard several people comment on that line and I am just like...wha???
It is obvious he is being turned down by a girl, and he is like...what's up? You must either like girls or be high to not be down with the brown.

Thats how i think he meant it. It is really a guy thing to say but not offensive imo. It's like the opinion that the right guy can turn a girl straight in Bambi. Yeah right but still a rocking song.

Good point, after all the bible promotes drug addiction (the non synthetic kind at least).

Imagine my disappointment when I realised I misheard, what I thought was, my favourite line from this track.

"This discothèque is 'bout 2 make me erect"

Since he's a 'fancy lesbian' wouldn't she be gay if she didn't refuse him?

Maybe the black album wasn't shelved because of an evening on ecstacy - He'd know that she was more likely to be 'loved up' after poppin' pills!!

It's not negative at all. It is art. The beauty of art is that there is a blank canvas for an artist to fill in with whatever he wants. No censorship. Prince can say whatever the fuck he wants. If he wants to say "All anorexic girls should kill themselves" then he should. It would be beautiful. He the artist. It's not his fault if you are offended.

Having said that, I personally don't think anorexic girls should kill themselves, and I do think being gay is almost BETTER than being straight, although I am straight.

But in the context, I also don't think he's referring to gay in a negative light. He's just saying the girl must be gay if she's not into him.

Speaking of art being a blank canvass of freedom...

What would be GENIUS would be...

Since Prince has made it clear in the past couple years that he no longer curses and is "family friendly"...

If he put out a CD called "For Kids" with a little cartoon picture of a red doggie on the cover...

And then the entire album was nothing but curse words...

Genius and the true freedom of artistry!

And the ultimate jerk-out.
