I don't see it as homophobic or putting homosexuality in the same category as drug addiction, the lyrics are pretty clear to me.
I just think it's an example of Prince's recent awkward phrasing in songs, awkard in terms of how it sounds, not the intent of the lyrics themselves. | |

Reminds me of when my friends and I would go out clubbing in the 90s and we realized that giving guys fake names and fake telephone numbers was not an effective broke-back scrub repellant; mainly because if you went back to the same club, you would often run into the same guy and he would approach you and inevitably say "I called you but I must have writen the number down wrong...."
At one point we adopted the practice of telling broke-back scrubs "sorry I'm gay" that usually worked but the stigma of that was guys you might be interested in talking to might not approach you (believe me guys talk); same thing with the "I'm taken" line (although that didn't always work -- we're talkin cat-daddy skrizzle). Ultimately we grew up and finally determined that the best course of action was to say, "no thanks". How simple was that! | |
