the vicki vale mix is hot shit!
and in the unreleased version the 1st beat change is slamming! man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

What are you talking about? It copied M/A/R/R/S 's 'Pump Up the Volume' but it was deserving of being a #1 single. Just because it came with a movie doesn't make it a hit. How many no 1's have Bond films launched? The over/under is about 3? (Take the under.) Brilliant production to meld soundbites from the movie with samples of the other songs on the soundtrack. Daringly brilliant. And what does right and wrong have to do with being a #1 single? Is it wrong to buy it or listen to it before it becomes a #1 single? I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

If i was going to bitch about a Prince song hitting #1, i would nominate "The Most Beautiful Girl In The World" or "Cream", now those are two Prince songs i hate! [Edited 4/12/09 19:00pm] 'Cream' is the embarrassment that made good. I never would have made that a single. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

I guess I could mention a lot of others that deserved better too, overall it's not really fair Prince often has been really poor in selling records. Back in 1985-1988 he deserved better, Especially Lovesexy not hitting in US was a big shame. Purple Rain deserved number one, but given that Let's Go Crazy and When Doves Cry were number ones, I don't think it was realistic. Raspberry Beret and U Got The Look were great songs, I wish they had been number ones. Lovesexy is a very good album, Alphabet St. could've been number one and maybe Anna Stesia. Was there a quota on 'Purple Rain'? The single didn't top the chart because we'd all seen the the movie a dozen times and played the album out. I don't want you to think like me. I just want you to think.

In the history of billboard? Are yo MAD??!?! Have you listen to what's gone number 1 in the past 15 years. F**kin Jughead is more deserving to be number one then. whatever song is number one right now.

What I loved about the whole Batdance/Batman thing was that it showed Prince could just pull off mainstream in the wink of an eye. I'm not saying that the album is too simple or anything but that for him to go from something like Lovesexy to then write Arms of orion which mainstream artists would love to sing, was really exciting at the time.

Batdance was so 'current' at the time I thought WB made Prince take on a producer or something. It's a fun song and deserved to be the massive hit that it was.

Just check out the same year, 1989, chart toppers by Madonna ("Like A Prayer"), Martika ("Toy Soldiers") or Janet Jackson ("Miss You Much"). Do you really think "Batdance" had even 1/10 of the mass appeal those hits had?

Without the movie backing, radio wouldn't have touched it. Sorry but there's no debate in that. there's all kinds of debate in that.it's a great song.it inspired trent reznors work on the natural born killers soundtrack(hell you could say it inspired his early work period) and if the song wasnt any good it wouldn't have sold over 1,000,000 copies(thats in the u.s. alone)regardles of what movie was backing it.

Batdance is nothing short of a masterwork, imo. Honestly, I sometimes think that if Prince had recorded it apart from the Batman film with no dialogue interspersed, people would be tripping over themselves at how creative, risky and innovative it is. It still strikes me as a stroke of genius after 20 years, with the tempo changes, hypnotic beats, haunting synths and fiery guitar work. Prince was definitely "on" with this one and he deserved a number one most absolutely. It's one time he deserved it and actually got it, thanks to the hype of the film.
The video clip is also one of the best Prince has done. Very creative idea, well-executed. Stand at the crossroads, and look, and ask for the ancient paths...(Jeremiah 6:16) www.ancientfaithradio.com

I love Batdance
And if the song isn't that spectacular for others, that wicked guitar solo sure does make the song I would have loved to hear each part made into an individual song, especially the part with the guitar solo... I love the Future as well...I listend to this one all the time [Edited 4/27/09 12:02pm]
