exodus hands down!
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

prince wanted to release 'the exodus has begun' as a single. he refused to cut it down. warner balked.

ludicrous choice for a radio single but EXCELLENT song.

I've never heard that. Wasn't the album on NPG records? Why would Warners be releasing a single?

One of his last great moments.
No hard feelings.

WB did releease a single of "The Good Life" in the US after the club mixes sort of took off a little bit in Europe. though it didn't include any of those club mixes, and just the standard Prince/NPG mixes.

it's possible that they might have expressed interest in another single, i guess. shrug

this album was part of the war with wb. there were several configurations, and wb was going to release it, several times, but then at the last minute they would keep requesting changes, and fucking with the scheduling, and generally doing a bait and switch. of course, prince was playing the same games right back with them. during this same period he was going on television saying wb refused to release 'the gold experience,' when in fact they had been begging him for it for months, and he was the one refusing to hand over the tapes.

wb was really hard for 'the most beautiful girl in the world' and 'endorphinemachine.'

eventually, in mid- 1995, 'the exodus' was put out on npg/edsel records in europe. wb canceled the u.s. release (which reportedly made prince extremely angry). i managed to get one by pre-ordering the import through a local record store. i paid $35 for it.

anyway, it's completely awesome and i feel it is prince's last truly classic album. ('the gold experience' was tainted by overproduction, and 'the rainbow children' skirts by on the strength of its inventive musicianship but i have a hard time fully endorsing 'trc' because of what i interpret to be an abhorrent underlying message.)

back in the day some of us speculated that prince was trying to sabotage the eventual release of 'the gold experience' by tinkering with the very same tracks the wb a&r people thought could be hits. he added cowbell to 'endorphinemachine' and cranked up the brittle sheen on virtually everything.

'the gold experience' sold not quite 500,000 copies. it almost went 'gold' -- get it? warner's own personal gold experience with their worldwide superstar. at the time it was by far his lowest selling album yet.

it's probably more likely that he simply couldn't leave well enough alone after sitting on most of the tracks for over two years. but at the same time he was definitely trying to maneuver things to neutralize wb's attempts to market him under their own terms. 'the exodus' concept has fairly obvious rebellious connotations. who knows why prince thought it would be a good idea for it to come out on wb records. maybe he thought it would be hilarious for them to spend money promoting his message that true artists don't need record labels.

strange times.
