i don't get the radiohead worshiping. nor can i understand why anyone like's u2 or u2 copycats (cold play). their music is just so bland.
all three are descrbed -or have been described at one point - as the best rock bands ever. so thats why i have mentioned all three. but they are so dull and so mainstream. (granted radiohead probably weren't at one point, but they are now). i randomly brought amnesiac because i thought i might like radiohead after thinking kid-a was ok and liking a cover of fake plastic trees. it was, without a doubt, one of the worse purchases i have ever made. though i did like the furry album cover. like u2, everyone likes radiohead. but i just don't get it? i have a very eclectic taste in music. anything from king crimson to tori amos. but i just don't get radiohead. am i missing something? Prince's continual refusal to be true the original songwriter's lyrics prevent him from ever doing a cover justice. i agree, prince's version was just terrible

Your sig speaks the truth, then. No matter who does a cover IMO you should always make an effort to become familiar with the original. "A Watcher scoffs at gravity!"

Achtung Baby is one of the greatest albums ever made imo. but idk, you either like it or you don't.

Radiohead is incredible, but I think Creep is possibly their most generic, lackluster song and I know they're aware of that. Prince definitely kicked the intensity up a notch with his version.

If you criticize can't you do it in a mature way that actually brings over a point without making you sound like an adolescent whining jerk off. [Edited 3/31/09 12:11pm] Well I am able to criticize without the name calling. Maybe you should take your own advice for mature posting. Thanks. Now let me simplify my point for you: Creep was written by a young Englishman with an inferiority complex. It's the prototypical song for a young band still finding their way as they come out of their adolescent years. To then suggest that a man in his 50's did a better job covering a song which deals with the specifics listed above is ridiculous. But obviously we're on a Prince board so a good many people here will simply think it was the greatest cover version since Prince thumped through Play That Funky Music or his Sly Stone medley for a billionth time. so a man in his 50's cant have an inferiourity complex either? i dont think its too far-fetched. also most people are judging the overall live performance in comparison to that of radiohead's. i personally liked Prince's better but radiohead is still strong on performing this as well.

It was cool that Prince gave a nod to Radiohead by doing "Creep." He did his thing with his version and I enjoyed it but I think the original is better. More times than not originals are better than remakes anyways. [Edited 3/31/09 14:14pm] I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Its a gorgeous "version" of the song.
I was just listening to again it a couple of days ago, and yes i love the orginal, but this is a whole other take on the song so you got to distance yourself from the original. Prince pretending to be radiohead, would be sad. I agree with wall on the changing of the lyrics for a "Prince" song. It works! He wishes YOU were special! lol.....that's Prince and i for one admire him for changing the lyrics, calling you all CREEPS! Fantastic cover of the song! [Edited 3/31/09 14:16pm]

My point, which obviously I'm doing a poor job of getting across, is that the song is the prototypical angst-y concoction of a young man and his band just coming into their own. It's mopey stuff that one matures out of. It's angry and aggressive, all those things one associates with 'misunderstood' youth. Perhaps Prince plays a finer guitar over it than Radiohead but it's hard to separate the original intent of the song with its creators. When someone says Prince did a better job with a song that couldn't be more tailor made for a man and his band in their 20's, well, that to me smacks of fandom run amok. The Rolling Stones might have done a better job moving people with a blaring rendition of Uptown in 1980, but it would still just be a cover of a song that they'd be a little out of place treading through. No hard feelings.

Exactly and I would dare say that I don't think it was his intent to do a better job than Radiohead with their song. I just think it was cool that Prince was willing to play a song that no one in the world would have dare thought he'd do. I love it when Prince goes left field like that. It's the 2nd time i mention Radiohead on this forum (last time was years ago) & i came 2 a conclusion:
Considering how people around here think Prince does just average music & that Radiohead is THE band, wouldn't it b wise 2 rename this website Radiohead.org? Also, i don't think that any of the people here that looooove Radiohead so much were there in the early 80's because Prince's rendition of the song is so much like his mythic 1983 rendition of Joni Mitchell's "A case of you", that dirty guitar sound he uses is related 2 that era (new wave & post punk bands) which was so emotional compared 2 modern, overproduced pop-rock. That precise over-produced sound that electroclash & nudisco musicians have been trying 2 avoid recently (thanx god). Where r the diapers??? . [Edited 3/31/09 15:31pm]
