I'm a big Radiohead fan, but I'd have to agree that Prince's version of Creep is much better than the original. Radiohead is incredible, but I think Creep is possibly their most generic, lackluster song and I know they're aware of that. Prince definitely kicked the intensity up a notch with his version.

The fact that, out of all the incredible Radiohead songs to cover, Prince chose what is essentially an immature adolescent whine shows what a lack of discernment he has when it comes to popular music. A 50 year old singing the lyrics to Creep is nothing short of hilarious and half a kilometer beyond out of touch.

Again you with this trolling. Can't you and japanrocks just leave these forums?
If you criticize can't you do it in a mature way that actually brings over a point without making you sound like an adolescent whining jerk off.

Well I am able to criticize without the name calling. Maybe you should take your own advice for mature posting. Thanks.

Now let me simplify my point for you: Creep was written by a young Englishman with an inferiority complex. It's the prototypical song for a young band still finding their way as they come out of their adolescent years. To then suggest that a man in his 50's did a better job covering a song which deals with the specifics listed above is ridiculous. But obviously we're on a Prince board so a good many people here will simply think it was the greatest cover version since Prince thumped through Play That Funky Music or his Sly Stone medley for a billionth time.

Although The walls assessment of the situation is borderlining on nasty, Lovesymbol2 should really see if there is a brain cell donor in the neighbourhood

wouldn't it be boring (and pointless) to do a cover that is identical to the original?

so a man in his 50's cant have an inferiourity complex either? i dont think its too far-fetched. also most people are judging the overall live performance in comparison to that of radiohead's. i personally liked Prince's better but radiohead is still strong on performing this as well.

My point, which obviously I'm doing a poor job of getting across, is that the song is the prototypical angst-y concoction of a young man and his band just coming into their own. It's mopey stuff that one matures out of. It's angry and aggressive, all those things one associates with 'misunderstood' youth. Perhaps Prince plays a finer guitar over it than Radiohead but it's hard to separate the original intent of the song with its creators. When someone says Prince did a better job with a song that couldn't be more tailor made for a man and his band in their 20's, well, that to me smacks of fandom run amok. The Rolling Stones might have done a better job moving people with a blaring rendition of Uptown in 1980, but it would still just be a cover of a song that they'd be a little out of place treading through.

you make a valid point on your take of the intent of the song, but i guess some people just don't care about that. i didn't really pick up on it because i was more focused on the actual live performance when comparing it to radiohead which i enjoy too. and judging by the excited reaction of the crowd on the clip they did as well.

Exactly and I would dare say that I don't think it was his intent to do a better job than Radiohead with their song. I just think it was cool that Prince was willing to play a song that no one in the world would have dare thought he'd do. I love it when Prince goes left field like that.

Me too. Prince covering Radiohead surprised the hell out of me. I love surprises. smile

nod Usually, anyway. Straight covers, no matter how lovingly done, are just boring. What's the point if the new version is going to be note-for-note identical? One that comes to mind is Sarah McLachlan's take on Joni's Blue. It's very pretty, but because it's almost a carbon copy it's also very dull.

On the other hand, a cover does need to be respectful to the original performer and the intent of the song IMO, even if the newer version does alter the meaning, a la Prince's version of Creep. nod

What you are saying is that a 50 year old man suddenly stops having angst and worries. I would say it gets worse with age!

It's just not acceptable to go around bleating on about it!

p barely even sings the song, especially the hook, how could this even be considered? lol it's fine enough though, great guitar work, etc. i dig it cool and extra cool points cuz i'm a big radiohead head giggle also. p can sing anyone's songs live, i generally don't care as long as i haven't heard him do it before giggle. as far as live prince covers go, the only one that is fuckin' with the original really, imo, is just my imagination, cuz that shit is the shit and will always be the shit, end of story lol lock.
