I was into Prince since Dirty Mind, when I listened to a friend's cassette walkman while he was jamming to it in High School. So I bought the vinyl Dirty Mind and then Controversy LPs, enjoying the perfect blend of punk/new wave/funk - the genres that I mostly listened to at the time.

Then the 1999 LP came out. The first time that I heard Little Red Corvette was a turning point, or a no-going-back point for me concerning Prince. It was the perfect song. It was everything I could ever want in my auditory color palette.

I heard a story of a Johnny Cougar(his name back then) concert where Mellencamp came out during his set and played Little Red Corvette from a boom-box into the PA. He had a need to bring the song to the attention of as many people as possible. At his own damn concert.

The song is that good. A classic. A masterpiece.

Don't get me started on the 12" Dance Mix.
If prince.org were to be made idiot proof, someone would just invent a better idiot.

Brilliant song, I love it and the dance mix, Love watching him perform the song in the 1985 live video (Prince and the Revolution). I often have the song on repeat, its impossible to listen to just once.I love the lyrics, A body like yours ought to be in jail cuz its on the verge of being obscene, move over baby give me the keys.

I pointed this out in some other thread
I guess I must be dumb cuz U had a pocket full of horses
Trojan and some of them used

So she had used condoms wrapers.. hmm
But it was Saturday night, I guess that makes it all right
And U say - "Baby, have U got enough gas?"
Oh yeah!

Enough gas is a metafore for "money" ?
So in other words she was a Prostitute
Prince is cheap woot!

Hey Nurse... great topic wink hug I put my hubby through the excruciating pain of watching the sign O times DVD yesterday lol he is not a Prince fan but... he likes "little red corvette", " purple rain" and "1999". So I told him Prince has many more hits (hello?).

Used condoms in her pocket? hmmm Wasn't this song written about Vanity?

"Baby, have U got enough gas?" ? I think he was asking her if she had enough stamina to "do it all night" typical Prince line.

I heard/read about this to. He wanted Prince to do co-lead vocals on Pink Houses, but I think Prince declined.

This is one of those Prince songs that not only doesn't sound like anything else he's done, but also doesn't sound like anything else anyone has done.

I would say it's his best song ever, but history would probably say that When Doves Cry is. That's OK - those 2 can share the title.

LRC has a very special place in my heart. It was my introduction to Prince.
Was watching a music video channel and the VJ said they were about to play a song by a real up and coming talent that has the whole music industry buzzing.

They then played the LRC video and I was like "damn"!, "wtf"? and "omfg"!! all at once. The song was great and Prince was just so damn cool. I have been a fan since.

The song itself, is brilliant, and yes the 12 inch is just plain filthy.

Definitely be spinning it today at work.

Yeah, I was pumping it on last saturday evening - the "dance mix" too. Needed something to get me in the right mood before a date, and it seemed to work wink

I remember when I first heard it on vinyl - this was ages ago, mind you - and how incredibly cool and warm the opening chords sounded through the headphones. I was literally mesmerized by the mood. Then the guitar break in the chorus! Let's not forget either that the version on the SOTT concert movie is a really great take on it too, especially the square-wavish synths instead of the OB-ish strings.

Listening to both versions now.

Man, this song really takes you back to where you were when you first heard it!

I remember rocking this from a Realistic mono tape recorder after taping it off the radio through the air . . . strapped to the rack of my 10-speed bike riding around town. cool eek
