Lotus is far from commercial, Prince following his muse, not always succeeding, but a far more personal album then the contrived dance-pop on MPLsound.

Let me explain:
Lotus is not following his muse, he is following the commercial shit, which is fine, cause there are fans who like the commercial site of him and his music.

Mplsound, now pprince cant follow the producers popular at this moment, because those producers have copied prince sound for many years, so it cant be Prince copying them.

Lotus Flow3r is commerical? What radio stations are you listening to? Looked at the charts lately?

As for Riverpoet's original post, others have said it before, but let me reiterate: The arrogance and nerve you've displayed here is frankly stunning. There's certainly nothing wrong with stating your opinions and disagreeing with other's appreciation for music you dislike, but you've just about laid a textbook example of how not engage discussion here. Shameful.

Prince is Prince and that's why we love him. It doesn't matetr what instrument he is playing or DRUMMACHine, he masters them all and such a range of vocals. While I understand there is alot of meaning in his songs, what attarcts me first and probably most of us, is the sound. Does it sound good yes it does? I wil listen to it over and over. People try and get too deep and philosophical about it all. When we see him in concert do we anlayse each song he played, bollocks we enjoy the performance and the different versions he produces live. That's why he's so good live. Purple RAIN HAS OVER A 1000 VERSIONS. I love both albums and even though MPLSound is supposedly back to his roots, it is still a new album. It looked like real drums to me played by CC on the Leno show for Old Skool Company. That is one funky ass song and already he has tweaked it for live performance with the bit of Backing vocal used on Come On live. There are lots of similarities between the two albums. Don't you tell me thet '$' couldn't have found a place on Dream Factory or Sign of the Times. While 'Valentina' would of quite easily fit on anything from Musicology to Planet Earth, even though it's supposed to be old skool Prince.
It's Prince and we love what he does thta's why we keep listenming to him. Stop analyisning and enjoy. Spread the word, 'He is the greatest musician of all time.' Real drums, sometimes that's me. Powerr to the people. Suckers!!!

I don't know if Prince has another great album in him from beginning to end however, I can't wait to get into Lotusflow3er. I've been stuck on MplSound for a couple of reasons.

1. 'Here' is an incredible song, the drum programming on this song and many others is pretty impressive. Have you ever tried to program a Linn or any other drum machine for that matter? Not easy to make it sound like he does and a fantastic melody with beautiful lyrics.

2.'Valentina' is clever and catchy, nice hooks.

3. Ol' Skool Company is fu(kin' SICK!!!!! It's sooo funky that you don't even realize how slow of a tempo the song really is!

4.No more Candy 4 U, Sounds like it could have been on Controversy somewhere. Very different for him in many years.

Anyway, I'm sure I'll dig Lotusflow3r the same way once I get to it. It's funny, I don't care for the first 3 songs on MplSound right now. Box of Choc. is growing on me a bit but I prefer the "songwriting" songs and not the dance song for the sake of a dance, although this might be a different point of view in about 3 months.

Anyway, it's about the songs, not the programming or the synths used but just the songs, the music. So shut up already and enjoy your music. Let's stop being so critical of something you haven't even had enough time to get to know.

Its not that I personally see Lotusflow3r as a musical masterpiece, but compared to MPLsound it almost is.

On Lotusflow3r, Prince shows he is still 'hungry' about how his music should sound, he is still trying new things, and still seems to dare himself.

MPLsound appears like a calculated attempt to copy his followers, without a lack of understanding what made his music great in the first place.

No single programmed linn-beat or composition on MPLsound can measure up with what a great electro-funk album like 1999 has to offer.

The fact you can hear a linn drum, or some cheap sounding synths on the album, doesnt make it comparable to an album like 1999, it first of all shows too many people are way too easy jumping on, based on superficial elements.

1999 is a great, innovative, very influential album: 9 out of 10.

MPLsound is a disaster: mistaking bubblegum dance-pop with great, innovative dance-music, offering very mediocre compositions, and lacking any funk. To put it simple: 4 out of 10.

So fill me in...

What exactly is "Prince music" all about since apparently YOU are the expert.
To me, Prince is about diversity, and a WHOLE shit load of different genres and styles...
Both albums are apparently what Prince is all about. He has always dabbled with many different sounds and genres.
Maybe you are unsure, really, what Prince is all about. That'd be my guess.
You like LF better, so what???? So your opinion is the word?
Yeah, sure....
To answer your question, It's just you.

I think it's great to share opinions on the music or discuss why (or why not) we personally like (or not like) Prince's albums or songs, but why can't people just like what they like and enjoy what they enjoy without their opinions being used as a measurement of their "appreciation" of Prince or to somehow categorize them as fans?

Well I'm glad someone else got around to this post so I don't have to write the whole argument.

I agree with the original poster.

I don't think that 1999 became a funk masterpiece because of the way Prince programmed the linn drum, though. For me it's always been about the content of the songs. They have message and emotion and depth, and that is what inspires the good album to follow.

What I hear on MPLSoUND is an attempt to attach content that is not heartfelt at all to some previously existing decent funky beats and grooves. But that doesn't make a masterpiece. It sounds... empty.

In fact what I think MPLSoUND is (intentional or not) is proof that Prince should not be trying to go backward, even if it seems delicious to us fans in theory. It's almost like it's an album that is meant to be side by side with LOTUSFLOW3R. While MPLSoUND can have it's funky moments (and at least old skool company on Jay Leno was CRAZY funky.... sad it doesn't have the same flow on the record), I can't help like this feels like... the really bad parts of the Emacipation era. That stuff you know just was... iffy at best. In fact, I'm pretty sure "Never Be Another Like Me" is another prince song from the mid or late 90s that I just can't put my finger on. But add a Linn and a Woooo at the beginning and now we are partying like 1999? No.

I hear references to the internet all over MPLSoUND too. Though there are a couple good tracks, I feel like this is what Prince gave his fans who were always wishing for the good old days, in that same way he gave WB some mediocre tracks at the end. Not all bad, but not much effort either.

And then..., LOTUSFLOW3R, someone said not a masterpiece but compared to MPLSoUND it seems like it. I can't agree more.
LOTUSFLOW3R isn't the best thing I ever heard, but there are many, MANY songs that are good... and you can tell it's from the heart. Those songs do have content, really try to deal with various issues, and the good instrumentation does indeed follow.

If you find yourself really really loving MPLSoUND, ask yourself why. Do you really want new musical experiences, or do you just want the good old days?

StephaniePlum is right. Some people may like Prince's songs because of their originality or creativity. Others love his songs simply because they make them dance or bob their heads. What one person views as being crucial to judging a song might be comepletely irrelevant to someone else.

Why do you feel the need to belittle people for liking what they like? Like you are an authority on Prince music? You need to get over yourself with a quickness. At least there are people here who still like what Prince is still doing and we should be happy for that. I'm one of those people who loves the hell outta MPLSound more than Lotusflow3r and I really dig Lotus a lot. MPLSound is the type of Prince album that reminds me of why I'm still a Prince fan. Great funky beats, great dance songs and just plain old fun from start to finish.

I don't treat music like its a biology project the way you do. I treated this CD like it was its own CD and I didn't compare it to 1999. If I noticed anything from that era, then cool but that was not my intent but it seems like it was yours and it's no wonder why you didn't like it. There's no point in me comparing the 2 cause I will lose the value and the fun of the current project by living in the past with an old project. For you to say that we don't know Prince's music cause we approve of MPLSound over Lotus is wrong and it shows us more about you than it does anyone in here who likes MPLSound but it's no surprise to me cause I've seen you do this before. Have fun with Lotusflow3r or 1999 but I'm going to enjoy ALL of Prince's music, INCLUDING MPLSound cause "There'll Never B Another Like" Prince. PERIOD.

I agree with Riverpoet, only because All The Midnights in The World is a better written song! Two different songs to not even compare, One is a well written song the other is a .....well... I need more time with this one however, it's a dance song, for the club or party, it's kinda mindless like a dance song is. It's a fun song.

Oh absolutely not. Prince and his band sound bored in almost every song on NPS, and it's transparent that he's pretending to have fun. That's why Wasted Kisses is one of the only songs on it that sounds sincere.

Dance 4 Me is perverse fun, and it has a seductive beat reminiscent of IIWYGF.

I remember Prince music being charming and fun, and I remember it making me feel good about myself and life in general. MPLSOUND makes me feel that way again.

I will be buying mine tomorrow

I love the minneapolis sound clips that were released

but this week the best night was Dreamer(Thursday)

I'm going to enjoy both albums, because I have been waiting for a (Rock) album from Prince (I love him on the guitar like he was from For U - Purple Rain)

And I love the minneapolis sound that became (HIS SOUND) not James Brown Jimi Hendrix Stevie Wonder George Clinton or whoever else

I don't think he is there yet. But I think he is returning to the music/sound that he(and those with him) developed during the 1978-1987 periods

See, and this is where I would have to disagree with you. Ol' Skool Company is pretty sick in the funk. I do think the first 3 songs are okay, they're not anything that great, at least to me so far. But there are a couple good tracks here, not a great whole album but some lil' gems.

The last half is pretty good in my opinion. Everything after U're Gonna See me. Should have never redid that song. It was the best song on One Nite Alone. It also feels out of place on this project.

I agree with 1 thing Prince sang on "Ol' School Company"

"Every other song on the radio = Me!"

I laughed when I heard that line..

These "hip-pop" producers and Timberlake/Land, Dream, Diddy, Neptunes (at points) etc..

I knew that he would do something to address that..

Before 2004, I was reading about alot of Hip-hoppers wanting to work with him.. So, I guess their labels created Prince-like production teams...

MPLsound simply is a turd. Weak songwriting, weak compositions. An album full of calculated, generic dance-pop, lacking funkieness, innovation and soul.

OK... I'll make it simple for you. If you simply had said that YOU thought that the album was "... a turd. Weak songwriting, weak compositions. An album full of calculated, generic dance-pop, lacking funkieness, innovation and soul."

Then I'd have little problem with you having your opinion. Everyone is entitled to an opinon. But that is not what you said. You said, "... people who approve MPLsound over...Lotusflow3r, have no idea what Princes music is originally about? Or to put it more blunt, don't even understand what good music means?"

Who the hell are you? (on a side note... how old are you...?)

That is more than just stating an opinion... it is tossing out a condescending insult towards any one who likes the album. Who made you an expert on what Prince's music is all about...? Only yourself in your own mind.

That is the definition of being arrogant... ie thinking more of yourself than you should. And it is ignorant... because you really don't have a clue.

The real nature of music is that it is subjective. You can be objective in analyzing the structure and how it is made... but the most objectively sounding music and still sound like crap. What moves one person simply may not reach another. What one person looks to get out of their music is not what another person looks towards. To not understand this is very narrow minded and shows a large degree of musical immaturity. You have no clue what moves me or the next person. You may be looking for some deep esoteric meaning in lyrics while others are looking at a tight head banging beat. Or just the simple fact that you just don't get it... so you choose to judge based on your own limited scope of music. And you have convinced yourself of some fine tuned sense of what music is.. which only exist.. once again... in your own mind. This is a limited scope about music.

You have issues with imposing your personal criteria and taste into situations and not only making them out to be supposed fact... but also belittling the personal criteria and taste of others at the same time. I have seen you do it before.. and you are doing it now. You haven't learned a thing yet.

p.s.

Wouldn't it have been easier to type one less letter... BigDaddyHQ... rather than BigDaddyetc...?

You could be psyche analyzed for doing things like that.

Riverpoet.....gotta kinda agree with your original post.

Then again, I have met all kinds of Prince fans and what Prince has managed to do with this release is please a lot of us at the same time. I guess that makes sense, since the new website is open and he needs our money.

There are a lot of Prince fans - and unfortunately for Prince, most of them are not hungry for new material from the guy. Probably why he made the price of a 3 record set so low. Also probably why he still has to do the hits - like he just did for his first show in L.A.

Keep in mind, there are people who just love anything the guy does. That is how much they love him (even though they do not know him). Call them crazy or whatever but they are here and not going away soon.

Mplsound, now pprince cant follow the producers popular at this moment, because those producers have copied prince sound for many years, so it cant be Prince copying them.

Unless either of you guys are Prince or his muse, you have no idea whether Prince is following her (him?) or not. From the fact that he has changed his style so many times and had many different levels of commercial success, I would say he's certainly not making his music for the money alone. He has shown time and again that he isn't making it with the end goal of getting approval. He is making his music for him (and, Jehovah apparently).

I am one of the ones that like MPLSOUND a great deal more than Lotusflow3r. That may change as I listen to each of them more.

Oh ... and whoever it was that said they didn't like Delirious ... How is that even possible?
Look at me, Baby! What can I say? Ain't no other fish in the sea!
