Am I The Only One Who Has Never Thought Of Prince As "Funky"? I mean, sure he has had some funky moments (like say Housequake or Shockadelica, and to an extent Erotic City) but when I think of words to describe P's music dry, sparse and colorful come to mind more than funky. I just don't understand this whole " I want the funky Prince" thing.

Occasionally, you're right. But I've had several of my friends who are non-Prince fans describe his music as funk and I think to myself "They must have never heard real Funk before".

It's surely not funk in the traditional sense. Most of his music has a straight pop/rock vibe anyway. In the 80s at least.

Not even close! I'm 31, been listening to P since I could talk. And I don't think Chicken Grease is particularly funky. Funk is not in the guitar for me, its in the low end.

Exactly! Yet he gets lumped into "funk". Hell, he even exclaims how funky he is during non-funky moments! Just an observation.

Fresh has lots of funky moments, but alot of Sly has an almost "R & B version of" folk feel to it

Prince has a Funky Slice 2 him...Prince has all of these different flavors of sounds that I honestly just give him his own Space on the music shelf. "The Lion Sleeps Tonight...

He clearly isn't one thing... hes funky, poppy, bluesy, rocky he does it all... and he covers more ground than any artist in my lifetime and well Dance... Let me see you dance

You're right, he does have different flavors. The funny thing is when I go back and listen to old albums, I'm starting to realize that Prince's sound was as varied as I thought it was. He basically wrote standard pop/rock and r&b structured tunes that had his own little mark on them. Not to take anything away from that, but I used to think "Prince can do any kind of music" but he really didn't and when he attempted to it wasn't all that great (3 Chains Of Gold anyone.....Bueller.....Bueller??..)

I used to think that also.....until someone put me on to Steven Wilson. [Edited 3/25/09 16:14pm]

Sure Cream or LRC aren't funky but Days of Wild, We Can Funk, and Old School Company sure are He gets labled as Funky because he is. Heck even when hes rocking out his band is funk and has plenty of bottom. His performance of Fury on SNL was funky like two day old Greens. Perhaps you need to listen to more music than just Bootsy or George Clinton Dance... Let me see you dance

We just have an obvious difference of opinion because IMO there was nothing, absolutely nothing funky about Fury on SNL! We Can Funk though.....you got me on that one...its pretty damn funky

Next to George Prince is the funkiest. Sometimes even a lil funkier. That's what I think! To Sir, with Love

I'd put Rick James before I'd put Prince in the "funkiest" category. Hell, I'd put Stevie Wonder and David Bowie in the "funkiest" category before Prince.

You know, I was thinking this past week about funk and was thinking that it's kinda off that label Prince "funky" or a funk artist. Yeah, he's had some funky ass tunes, but as a whole, no.
