I mean, sure he has had some funky moments (like say Housequake or Shockadelica, and to an extent Erotic City) but when I think of words to describe P's music dry, sparse and colorful come to mind more than funky. I just don't understand this whole " I want the funky Prince" thing.

I just think he's Cool.

It's surely not funk in the traditional sense. Most of his music has a straight pop/rock vibe anyway. In the 80s at least.

You're right, he does have different flavors. The funny thing is when I go back and listen to old albums, I'm starting to realize that Prince's sound was as varied as I thought it was. He basically wrote standard pop/rock and r&b structured tunes that had his own little mark on them. Not to take anything away from that, but I used to think "Prince can do any kind of music" but he really didn't and when he attempted to it wasn't all that great (3 Chains Of Gold anyone.....Bueller.....Bueller??..)

He gets labled as Funky because he is. Heck even when hes rocking out his band is funk and has plenty of bottom. His performance of Fury on SNL was funky like two day old Greens.

Perhaps you need to listen to more music than just Bootsy or George Clinton
