Is it sometimes lonely for you being a Prince fan?

I have to admit, I don't know anybody in my life right now who's a Prince fan and it gets lonely sometimes, actually more than I want to admit.

For example, right now with Prince's new album coming out and his upcoming appearances at The Tonight Show and his concerts next Saturday, I was so excited about them but really don't have anybody around me here whom I can share my excitement with. Every time I mentioned it to a friend or family member, they just say, "Really?" and that's it. I can't even ask anyone to go with me to a taping of The Tonight Show or go to the concert with me next Saturday. I do know I'll see likeminded Prince fans there and this place is a haven for me to just chill with other Prince fans but I have to admit I wish I have friends here that I can share my passion for Prince's music.

I've tried to get my friends/family to Prince's music but to no avail. I guess being a Prince fan is a unique and special experience and I actually like that aspect of it but still it gets lonely for me. How about you? How do you deal with it?

I'm with you! My friends like Prince, but they are not sold-out fans. My musical family appreciates his talent, but would not go out of their way to see Prince. 2 of my happy children (teens) would see Prince, if and when it was not a 21 year and older venue. lol

Yes, I suppose. For 5+ years I was with someone who was as into Prince as me (maybe moreso), and so were some of his friends and family.

It's a little weird not being surrounded by Prince lovers. It was something of a comfort, I guess. A common language and experiences, etc.

The next time around, I'm not sure if Prince-mania is something that is a pre-requisite or not. It'd make things easier, but I don't know if it's a wise path to go down again. lol

Lonliness is something we have 2 learn 2 do...I don't believe anyone gets comfortable with the feeling. Although I have 2 say that Prince's music has been comforting, because I found and believed in a friendship through the airwaves. cool

i dont even try with my significant other anymore. whenever i bring Prince up all I hear is random crap about him wearing makeup and high heels and butt-out jeans, the whole 90's weirdness and all 2 million publically embarrasing things Prince has done since 1978.

if i wanna talk about Prince i gotta come to the Org sad

NO. For the most part everyone around me likes Prince's music.
I dont really associate myself with people who don't respect him as a musician.

Depends on my different circles of friends and acquaintances, either ways I never reached the state of so-called loneliness.

Hell, I feel that same loneliness when it comes to love of music period! I hear stories of the '70s in which just about everyone was excited when Led Zeppelin came to town, when you could talk to random people in your high school classroom about their favorite bands, etc. I don't know but it seems like music isn't a priority for anyone in my social circle except for me. I mean everyone digs music to a certain extent but most people I know give the static reply "I dig everything" and download a catchy song or two they hear on occasion. I have known fellow "music geeks" but they tend to be fanatical only about certain styles of music; specifically art rock/punk (which I love). But I don't really know any other people who are into extensively reading biographies and obsessing over trivial things about their favorite musicians. In some ways, I can't blame them because people do tend to need to get their lives together and sometimes find less time to listen to albums but I also think that it's a blessing to love music so much because it provides such great emotional release and comfort. I really can't imagine any key moments in my life that go without a song.

So yeah, I digress. It is hard enough finding other dedicated music lovers let alone Prince fans. I have however been able to get my closest friends to reevaluate his music since I listen to it so much. smile That's probably why I'll be spending more time browsing through these forums. Where else am I going to discuss my love for "Forever in My Life" and have anyone know what I'm talking about?

It used to be but in the last 5 years, I have friends in L,A and here in NYC who are as big a Prince fan as I am if not moreso. It's great for me here cause if I wanna hang with my "Purple Friends", I'll hop on the subway and hang with them. I can't wait to see my L.A. Purple friends too cause I miss them a lot. I love having them there to bounce my stuff of on them, lots of things I don't discuss here on the board and vice versa. It's a great support system that goes beyond Prince but thanks to the common bond, it brings us closer together and I am grateful for it everyday, I really am. I pray that all of you who doesn't have that now, will have it in the near future. Hell, holla at me and I'll be your friend, no question about it. nod
I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Tame: I totally agree, lonliness is something we all have to learn to do, and sometimes is not pleasant at the time, but in some cases being alone for awhile can be healing to the soul, sometimes it can be very spiritual. Such as in the many times, Jesus went off to be alone, just to be with his father in prayer.

Lonliness can be a positive experience or a negative one, it all depends on our mindset.

I know what you're talking about, I'm only 15 years old and most of my friends doesn't even know any Prince song except Purple Rain. Everytime I even mention Prince all my friends are like "Don't start to talk about Prince again",bcuz I talk ALOT about him lol:P
My sister is the only one that puts up with my Prince talk, even though she loves Michael Jackson, we have a lot of discussions on who is the best of them both, and we all know PRINCE OWNS MJ!!!
my friends call me old because of my musical taste, I mostly listen to 80's music. hehe

You'd think so, wouldn't you?

However, I'm with the OP on this one. Been a fan for 25 or so years and in that time only had one friend who was a fan and not one lover.

Right now, I'm gettin the usual excitment about the new release, but don't know a soul who gives a shit.

You get used to it.
