Wow, two great albums in one go. I pretty much second all the other positive comments here but would just like to add one other thing I was thinking. Recently, some of the more contemporary-sounding Prince songs have made me imagine Prince saying "the kids these days, they love the rap!" while he made them but I didn't imagine that this time. He managed to make MPLSound contemporary-sounding, but this time he was able to make it his own and not sound like he was just jumping on the bandwagon. Definite 8/10 at least.

What did you want him to say Fuckas!! He said Suckas because thats what 50 year old black men say. Prince trying to sound urban? You guys are so funny The Time used words like "sho'ty"? For the record, I fucking LOVE MPLSoUND, the record is hot. My criticism is the ONLY thing that pulls me out of the flow, but it is a small thing--like I said, the record is H.O.T. Let's be fair though, give me the most urban, street, funk ass lyric from a Time song and we will go from there. I'm waiting. Dude stop letting hip hop shape what your idea of what urban is. Also lets face it your use of the term Urban is just a code word for black. Prince is plenty urban ok. Not trying to be combative I just don't like the fact that I think you are buying into how hip hop defines that. By the way I saw your comments regarding the fact that you like the disc... so do I. Thats not the issue I was raising. I'm 42 and when I was growing up here in DC sho'ty was a common saying and still is among black read urban males my age. Hes not trying to be urban... he is urban.... and that is a common word used in the black community as for the Time... of the top of my head immediately the song Release It from Graffitti Bridge comes to mind. Morris Day uses the term "Stella" which in the urban (read black) community is a term for a fine a$$ woman. Now that is just immediately off the top of my head Dance... Let me see you dance

Luckily Prince did this as a dedication to Salma Hayek and her daughter. Well, now you notice how much I paid attention to it! LOL Maybe on a few listens I could get into it... follow me on twitter - Lovenharmony1 aka @DAPfan2c

this "plugged" arrangement of 'u're gonna c me' is making me yearn
to hear the plugged version of "welcome 2 the dawn". 'u're gonna c me' is the only song on one nite alone that lingers a bit too long imo. but he's turned it into a beautiful song this time round. it was beautiful before but i like this reworking too. i didn't like it when he re-recorded "dark" and i especially hate his reworking of "the dance" but this re-recording is beautiful. and true love lives on lollipops and crisps

The first "new-era" Prince album I've listened to that hasn't made me long for the Prince of old to return...he hasn't gone anywhere!
- E-mail - orgNote - Report post to moderator |
TNBALM - What twisted, vindictive Necromancer thought it was a good idea to ressurect the NPGMC-era sound? No redeeming features whatsoever - Run for the hills, pray for respite from this evilness, bind it with a spell of silence, put a hex on it, call an exorcist and kill it with fire.
Chocolate Box - Prince continues to try and play catch-up with last seasons trends in chart-impacting pop/R&B with his take on 'My Humps', etc. I think there's a level of Hell in Dante's Inferno where some poor souls are forced to listen to this for all eternity. No doubt I'm heading there myself if I don't eat my greens. Dance 4 Me - Urgh, is this really only track 3? I've already had more than enough.... would slot on NPS in between the title track and Freaks On This Side. U're Gonna See Me - Syrupy but mildly enjoyable. There's nothing here Prince hasn't done before, it's a ballad and sprinkled with those chord progressions Prince uses post-Emancipation to make them sound sentimental, maudlin, but at least different to your average syrupy ballad. Nice, but neither strong nor individual. Here - Oh no, not another one. 'U're Gonna See Me' has a slightly uglier twin. They'll never find a date sitting together all glum, sagging down the middle of this already depressing album. Valentina - What's worse than a Prince track that tries to sound like an R&B/pop dance hit? That's right, a Prince track that tries to sound like a mid-tempo R&B/pop hit. At least this one comes in under 4 minutes, 'Chocolate Box' was an excrutiating 6 minutes 14 seconds :-/ Better With Time - Starts out and I thought it sounded like 'Still Would Stand All Time' if it was recorded for Emancipation. The vocal is extraordinarily weak (a criticism I have with many of Prince's recent albums that I think is more a product of age than effort). The track is sedate, enjoyably so - and that's a first for MPLSound, so that's something. Ol' Skool Company - Sped-up vocal takes the edge of another drippy hip-hop influenced R&B drawl. Reminded me of 'When Will We Be Paid' (which is a much better track). No More Candy 4 U - Silly and throwaway. Like John Waters and Little Richard orchestrating a chorus of circus clowns in a rendition of 'Choas & Disorder' - best track on the LP and quite special. Overall: Prince has been very considerate with his latest release, he's put all the crap on a single disc. Now, I don't know about diamonds in the rough, but dig through MPLSound and you might find the occasional QVC diamonique ring like 'Better With Time'. It's amazing how few twists and turns there are on this album, basically once you've heard the first 20 seconds of a track, you've heard everything they have to offer. MPLSound is to Prince as Hard Candy is to Madonna. [Edited 3/25/09 11:15am]

I'm shocked. Not only do I *not* hate it, which I was expecting to, I actually kind of love it. The worst 2 tracks are the 2 that were used to preview it. The rest of it is either really good or really fun. I'm blown away. I don't know if I like it as much as LF, but it's possible, because it doesn't have the slight issues of unnevenness that the other one does.

Dance with me is my favorite! aside from the ultra lash and christian dior rap UGH, but the song is fun. Love old sckool company and HERE is what a girl loves to hear!!!! Beautiful song. Not quite feeling the better with time song, its a bit Queen bohemian rapsody for me. Disappointed with TBALM and Choc Box and Valentina is not relatable and plus the woman is Married LOL Erks me when i hear it. Lotus flower is leagues above this but it still has some classic fun moments. On its own, it would not go over well at all.

Wow. Good job, Prince. You finally figured out how to do these kinds of songs again without making me want to hide under the table. This is great! I feel the same way... Dance 4 Me incoporates the best of old & future. And unlike Kirky J's plastic/tin production on Newpower Soul, the beats a rubbery bounce, the bass is thick, the rhythm guitar licks are skintight, and the key synths have that snake. Add some flanger effects, stray rim shots, and the return to Camille... this is a solid outing.
