preach.

i do wonder what these sounded like before mastering. is prince 'mastering' these himself? does he just run it through a protools eq plugin to max out the volume? what's going on? there are some good songs on here but i can't blame anyone for not being able to tell. even the first track wouldn't sound so bad (the latter half is actually pretty interesting) if the chorus wasn't so dissonant as to be painful to the ears.

i wonder if his work from the last ten years still exists somewhere in its pre-mastered form.
it's time for a new direction / it's time for jazz to die

It gets on my fucking nerves when i see someone saying Prince should save the best of the 2 albums so he could do a classic album. Fck off with classic albums, times changed. you still got the great songs! Why the hell edit out more than half of the songs? I would prefer Prince to release all his throw away songs, i am sure we still would find lots of great riffs solos and melodies.

Yup. The funny thing is, a lot of the people who say that are the same ones who'd be clamoring for those songs if they were unreleased.

We want him to 'free the music' and when he does put out a bunch of stuff at once, it's then 'no, you fool, it could've been one CD!'. lol

LOTUSFLOW3R and MPLSoUND are the first Prince albums in I don't know how long where I'm not pressing the skip button. At all.

After many listens, I am convinced that any Prince fan not digging these discs may as well call it a day and just stick to live performances from now on, because I doubt you'll ever be happy again with his studio work.

Agree, if u dont like this i dont think u'll ever will like what he does, its the best he's had out for a long while. im really digging these albums i didnt skip on lotus and havent on MPLsound eek even the ballads are good! No more candy 4 u is funny lol loving it!

Not to mention the fact that a lot of the time they're talking about dropping some of the better cuts as the "throwaways." Isn't it obvious just by reading this site that *every* song is someone's favorite. Why does another fan have to lose out because they don't have the patience to appreciate anything but "tha hot trax! OMFG!!!"

I'm with you on that. What's so cool about this set is like what you said, there is something in there for everyone. I would love for the people who are not feeling these albums to give it more time cause as we've seen here, those that have given it more time are starting to dig it but if they don't, then that's fine too. Somethings aren't for everyone and that's not wrong. I just hope that we are all enjoying this CD to some extent cause I know that I am. biggrin

What do you think about songs like "Love",

I absolutely loved the song "Love". It was an uptempo danceable jam with none of the horns and jazz elements that Prince has been using for years. Also, the song had lyrics with a melody that were sung and not rapped, and best of all, it had no shit hop feel to it whatsoever. If there were to be an updated version of the Minneapolis Sound, this would be it.

"Strange but True",and "The Funky Design"

Are those album tracks? I don't think I've heard them or maybe they are tracks that I've skipped over for years.

"18 & Over",

I absolutely hated that one. It's everything I despise in music today. It's stripped down midtempo shit hop sounding music that's only good for head bobbing. The only time head bobbing is not dull is if you are naked. Ass shaking is fun.

Seems like there's a theme developing here between the rock vs. funk crowd, the rifts that seem to divide them and the songs they enjoy.

A lot of people misunderstand who it is that's against shit hop. The biggest haters of shit hop are from the funk crowd, not the rock crowd. Shit hop is not funk and there's not a thing funky about shit hop. It's because of shit hop that there's no funk today. Shit hop is the enemy and for a funk lover to embrace it is like someone embracing the person that killed their family member.

I am still soul searching MPLSOUND. I have mixed feelings. The songs are fun. I like that. That is about all that I expect out of an album... it's just entertainment in the end.

Is it going to be as memorable to me as 3121? I don't know yet. Let you know in about 3 years.

people stuck in the past need to be quiet....and don't refer to hip hop as "shit hop" and disrespect.

this is the old updated for the new...get with it, this is the new Mplsound.

It would of been terrible if he released the old school Mplsound.

I'm just calling it what it is and will continue to do so as long as it dominates. As for disrespecting it, it's a disrespectful form of music. If they can't take disrespect, they need to stop dishing it out.

As for stuck in the past, I'm quite the opposite. I'm the one that wants to move on. Shit hop is the one that's stuck in the past. It's dominated since the early 1990s and hasn't left yet. Next.....

Qtip is hip hop...he had one of the best and most creative albums of last year.

to completely trash a genre of music just because some make a fool of themselves doing it, LIKE IN EVERY OTHER GENRE, is disrespect and ignorance at it's best.

And i think you will find that indie rock is the dominant genre in mainstream today.

I don't judge the whole genre by the stupid actions of a few. I judge the whole genre because it's all slow to midtempo, stripped down of instruments, and dull as hell. If a rap song fits that description, then it's "shit hop". If it doesn't, then it's "hip hop".

I made up the term "shit hop" to distinguish from the two. Go back and listen to some rap from the early 1980s such as Soul Sonic Force, Egyptian Lover, Dr. Jeckyl & Mr. Hyde, etc. It's not slow, dull, and stripped down like that shit that started dominating in the early 1990s. And they didn't carry themselves like criminals or thugs either.

My example above, Qtip, was not stripped of instruments, it had a full band...even if it didn't and was synth heavy (which is still an instrument) but was still creative, then it's all good.

I know the examples you gave, i am not looking to go back as you keep doing and now trying to get me to do, i concentrate on the now. Sure, alot of corruption came out in the nineties like now too, but that was in all genres, not just Hip Hop. As with all genres today, you have to dig to find the real deals.

I am not looking for repeats but, something new or up to date and at the same time, doesn't cater to the disease of the industry. The new Mplsound does this well. I would want nothing less then a Prince stuck in the past throwing Erotic City 2, Controversy 2, 1999 2 etc at me for a Mplsound album.

let me echo some sentiments being thrown around here about how prince should condense his releases in2 a 10 song album yada yada BULLSHIT! with someone that has over 500 songs in that vault dammit i want 2 hear every single note that's within them. and if u don't, then that's ur choice, but i would love it if 4 every multiple disc release this wouldn't happen. and if i'm correct, lotus and mplsound r 2 DIFFERENT RELEASES!!

another topic that has been getting under my skin is those that r "funk masters phd" folks that will try and birate those that find tracks funky but then being told IT'S NOT FUNK it's SHIT HOP ..what is so wrong with just bobbing ur head 2 a groove and getting that funky face while doing so? it's funky 2 me and it's funky 2 others. there shouldn't b a need 2 be critical of those that find this music as funk. yes i'm a old school hip hop fan and i don't like a lot of current hip hop, but it doesn't mean that there is not hip hop still out there. it's this same mentality when ur looking at prince's music and saying oh it's not funky like how dmsr is compared 2 dance 4 me.

leave ur xpecations at the door and u just might have a better liking of his current music.

peace
man, he has such an amazing body of music that it's sad to see him constrict it down to the basics. he's too talented for the lineup he's doing. estelle 81

I couldn't agree with you more especially the last line. And I wonder, why are people STILL comparing Prince's past with this current stuff? Why can't MPLSound or Lotusflow3r be it's own CD's? Were fans who were with P in 1982 comparing 1999 to Dirty Mind or Controversy back then or was it a whole new experience? I never expected MPLSound to sound like 1999 or Purple Rain, I just hoped it would be a good album and it went above and beyond the call of duty for me. I found many songs on there to be funky and I loved them. I don't know, I just wonder if people are looking for things to criticize when it comes to Prince. It's not science, you either like the music or you don't. I hope I don't come off as belittling or condescending but I've always thought that if I compared the past with the present with music from my favorite artists, I was doing myself a disservice but that's just me with it. Different strokes for different folks.

Also, why do fans feel the need to knock other fans for liking these songs on MPLSound? Calling us "fams" and looking down on us because we find it funky. I see it happening here and even in the Non-Prince section where this CD is concerned. Like what L4OA said, just because you love Funk does NOT mean you're an expert and me thinking something is funky on this CD that you don't is not grounds for you to look down on me and others, thinking that we'll kiss Prince's ass cause we'll like anything he puts out when that's a lie right there. You don't get any points for trying to have a superior attitude with that thinking & that's immaturity at it's best right there. I will respect you for disliking what you don't like but DON'T disrespect me for liking what I like. We can agree to disagree and call it a day.

see some of the posts above. when people say things like "people stuck in the past need to be quiet" it doesn't come across as simple enthusiasm for the new songs. why isn't okay for some people to not like the new songs?

I think that "Here" is becoming my favorite song off this CD. The beats, the music, the lyrics, they all fit on this track and it just stays in my head like it's nothing. That song is FIRE! music

And if anyone is stuck in the past, it's Prince on Mplsound. I've never heard a more desperate attempt to rekindle his former glory. The irony is, the people who incorrectly assume criticism of Prince is tantamount to someone wanting him to make Purple Rain II are the first to drool when they hear the linn used for the millionth time or the Camille voice played up yet again.
