I hear that....There's R&B and then there is R & Cheese. Exactly! some people love their music smothered in cheeese. and to compare the minniapolis sound to R & B is funny too. it was kinda the anti-R & B sound with elements of rock, funk, and new wave. If this sounded like a Marvin Gaye album i would totally love it too. It has nothing to do with lables, it has to do with the actual music in it. The folks who make such proclamations have issues that have nothing to do with the music itself, but rather are insecure and like to put things in their own little defined boxes. | |

I only heard both albums 1 time, so this is not a 'full review' yet.
On first impressions, my thoughts about MPLsound are: Kinda what I expected: Prince uses key-elements of his 'original style' (the period 1981 - 1984 most obviously) to create new songs with: the linn-drum, the prominent 'cheap' sounding synthsounds, expanding songs with a (semi-) instrumental coda to turn it into dancefloor-type of material. A big complaint about how he uses those elements on this album is, is that it is often far from creative. Its NOT the linn-sound that made Princes music so great back then, its how INVENTIVE and brilliant the beats were he created with that drummachine. On the album i havent heard a single programmed beat that can be compared with the brilliance he offered with, lets say: Automatic, When Doves Cry, Raspberry Beret or the Ballad of Dorothy Parker. The same goes with how he uses synths that are VERY obviously suppose to sound like synths, and not like other instruments. In his 'older' arrangements they were often cleverly arranged to offer a kind of campy or 'outlandish' flavour to his songs, on MLPsound they often sound misplaced or gimmick-ish. So far, my complaints about the sound and the production of the album. Another big let down of this album for me is that most of the compositions underneath that gimmicky 'retro-sound' lack any real punch, strong hooks and riffs or real funkieness. Songs like Chocolate Box and Dance 4 me sound like Prince doing old-prince songs through the ears of Prince-inspired producers like The Neptunes, Timbaland and Missy Elliot, but then worse: Chocolate Box reminds of filler from a late Britney Spears album, or, something as ridicolous like 'My Humps' by Fergie. And anyone who dares to call Dance 4 Me 'great funk' needs not only his or her ears checked, but his or her brain also. Flashlight by Parliament is great funk, Automatic, Le Grind and Hide the Bone by Prince are great funk, Dance 4 me is mediocre dance-pop. A huge difference with the early eighties is that, back then, Prince mostly used strong, well composed 'skeletons' to create his innovative music. Compositions that could compete with the best funk-stompers and the most 'hip' new-wave compositions at that time. On MPLsound his compositions are mostly copies of empty bubblegum dance-pop / producers-pop. Is it all bad? well, lets be generous, the last track: No More candy 4 U was kind of a pleasant surprise. Campy, computerized rockabilly / new-wave that reminded me of Delirious and Jack U Off. But... for the rest? Why, please explain? Isnt Hide the Bone 'funk' or something? Personally i find it one of his best hard funk-tracks from the nineties. The lyrics might be cliched and all, but groove-wise its great: that big, hard drum-sound, that classic guitar-riffing and vocal chants. Huh... I remember how much hate there seemed to be for 'All the Midnights in the world' from Planet Earth, coming from the R&B camp, while personally i find it one of his best songs from the 00's. Anyone who knows a bit about (and enjoys) 'the perfect popsong' (Beatles, Crowded house, Matthew Sweet etc.) does understand that song isnt bad at all. Oh, and when it comes to R&B/funk vs Rock, you are making an assumption that just doesnt make sense. I love rock. I also love funk, but i generally hate contemporary R&B. Traditional R&B (read: Rhythem and Blues, by the likes of Otis Redding, The Neville Brothers and James Brown, to name a few) was often great, but most contemporary R&B is nothing more then producers-pop / teenybopper stuff, lacking soul and very generic. In fact, that anyone even dares to call MPLsound funk is absurd IMO. Indeed, it has some funk-elements, but both composition- and productionwise its mostly sounding like plastic dance-pop, like most of the contemporary R&B unfortunately does. | |

Ok, I never write on these sites, but have been a member of the org for some time now and a very log time fan of Prince. This new album - MPLSound - has brought me to just having to post. THIS IS THE ALBUM I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR!!! I am in love with the man all over again. Thank you, Prince for making it so freakin' funky. I have bought all of his previous stuff and felt like there were many a toss-away track on each. But this one - the jams keep coming! Even the slow ones! I love "Better with Age". I love the whole thing! No More Candy for You - those crunchy chords! Come on! It just doesn't get any better...for me at least. Can't wait to see him live!!! | |

There is this french horn thats sounds like "DanaDanupa" (say it as if its a word) Zapp used to use that all the time in their songs. Around Parade when I heard Girls & Boys I nearly fell out of my chair when Prince used that throughout the song! There have been other times as well. I think that Dance 4 Me definately has a Zapp feel but Prince like so many others styles that influence him makes it his own. For example half way through Dance 4 Me Prince brings out this fuzzy guitar thats behind the mix a bit... that totally changes the feel of the song (IMO) to guess what? Well.
I just played MPLSound from end to end for the first time, on headphones, at work and on my bike. And then I got back to my house and played 'Rebirth of the Flesh' (first tune that came up afterwards.) This tune has crazy syncopation, surprise, joy, some genuine surprise, a demented horn section and a SICK ensemble feel. And all of these things are missing from MPLSound. [Edited 3/27/09 8:55am] . good to see someone who talks sense....i agree with almost everything you said ....prince's recent output is lacking in really strong melodies with the odd exception but prince has a back catalogue second to none....his days of making inovative music are gone and i think he is now content with being a still great live act....i still enjoy his new music but i dont expect him to top sott Yep dancy generic dance pop... and then you say No More Candy reminds you of Delirious never a more dancy pop song written in the 80s and Jack U off which is just a complete mess and probably can be catergorized just garbage along with Ronnie Talk to Russia You see I'm on to some of you... you trash songs that are on Mplsound and then site more traditional pop tiny bopper based songs that Prince did 30 years ago as being better. Ok after 3 days, here is my review
(There’ll Never B) Another Like Me - Uh... skip Chocolate Box - Love the beat and energy of this song. Could do without the panting, which is somewhat creepy, but I cannot sit still when this joint is on. Love Qtips rap as well. I did not like Discojellyfish by itself it did not make any sense. I realized it was an extension of CH Box I just did not know how it fit in. Hearing it here mixed in it sounds really good and works. Nice bangin dance track from the kid! Dance 4 Me - Loved it immediately. Prince meets Zapp/Roger Troutman. Two excellent dance tracks back to back. This is clearly the best dance track Prince has put on an album since the lase 80s easily. U’re Gonna C Me - Took a second listen to hit me... Love the bridge on this joint. Here - Same as above it a couple of listens before I could hear it. I think his vocal treatment of the song is nice too. One reviewer said Prince's falsetto was missing from these discs. After listening to these songs, I was scratching my head thinking did she even listen. Valentina - Funny tune and a groove... I like the Santana like turn it takes in the middle there.... and that voice that he raps sings in... I really like Better with Time - eh... don't really have a lot to say. Maybe it will grow on me. I'll leave it at that. Ol’ Skool Company - Funky like doo doo... simply ridiculous. That brittle guitar is killer and certainly Minneapolis sound! I blasted this joint in my car on the way home from work the other night. I kept playing it over and over and over again. I felt lik my eardrums rolled out of my head and I had to stuff them back in I thought something was missing from the performance of this song the other night (even though it was still good) P might have to work on a way to transfer that linn programming to the live performance because I think it can be fuller/heavier live. Excellent track though IMO No More Candy 4 U - This seems to be a favorite for many especially those that prefer LotusFlower over Mplsound. It didn't hit me at 1st but has grown on me. The drums start out similar to Hey Ya and I thought that was where he was going. He then made a hard left. After a few listen I like it now... funky and different sort of like $ if different on Lotusflower Overall - Very strong effort from the man. I'm very happy it’s been a while since I feel like I have been able to listen to a whole Prince album and really enjoy it.
