Okay, let me preface this by saying you get a whole different perspective on this disc by driving to it. The first time I listened, I was at my desk at work - and was doing some other things at the same time. While driving, the album had my undivided attention. My impression of it was not improved, frankly.
The first two songs are both too long. I didn't much care for (There'll Never B) Another Like Me when it came out earlier...and all I could think while I was listening to it was that it could stand to be about 2 minutes shorter. Same with Chocolate Box. That one's funky as all get-out - and I loved Disco Jellyfish. But again...it could have been significantly shorter without giving up a thing. Dance 4 Me - The funky congregation loves this one. Camille voice...Linn Drum...Hallelujah! U're Gonna C Me - I was steeling myself to hate this one. I love the version on ONA and I really didn't care for what he did with The Dance on 3121...so I was expecting to hate this. No, it isn't as vulnerable and sweet as the ONA version. But it has its own charm. And I love the Clare Fischer strings...always. Here - Eh, it's a trifle. Don't hate it...don't love it. A solid C. Valentina - I have to admit, I don't really get this song. Writing to Salma Hayek's little girl? I'm sorry - but that's just strange, bordering on creepy. The song itself is funky...but I'm having a hard time getting past the concept. Better With Time - Very pretty song. Not sure it belongs on this album, but I like it. (Wonder who it's about?) Ol' Skool Company - Fonky. Booties will be bumping to this at Berlin, no doubt. Can't wait to see him do this one live. No More Candy 4 U - He's in full diss mode here - and I love him like that. The song has sort of a Jerry Lee Lewis tinged with punk flavor. (It reminds me of Roll Over Beethoven.) It's kind of odd, but it works for the most part. We don’t mourn artists because we knew them. We mourn them because they helped us know ourselves.

(There’ll Never B) Another Like Me - Loving it! Through and through. That's the Prince, I want to remember. Chocolate Box - Hated it! Dance 4 Me - Camille!!!! Bitch, where you been, how you been doing? This is what earned my money! U’re Gonna C Me - Hated it! Here - Hated it! Valentina - Hated it! Better with Time - Hated it! Ol’ Skool Company - It's Camille and the Prince I want to remember, damn it! Loving it! No More Candy 4 U - Loved the vibe, just ain't feeling the funk! I hated LOVESEXY the first time I heard it. Now, 20+ years later I can still hear it beginning to end and groove til dawn. Try MPLSoUND again, it is better with every spin, I promise u. It really does get better with each listen. I've heard this CD like 4 times already and it's already one of my favorite Prince CD's. I'm listening to Chocolate Box right now! I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

its such a fantastic track. its soothing, funky, sweet and fantasticly composed. reminded me a TAD of What Do U Want Me 2 Do? anyone else agree here that its great? [Edited 3/25/09 16:46pm] Right here! The melody and the drum beat stick in my head like mad! I must say with the drum beat, it's so thick, if that's the right way to say it (I'm not a musician ) and heavy that it makes me fall in love with the song based on that alone. It's a hot song, period. I'm not a fan of "old Prince". I'm not a fan of "new Prince". I'm just a fan of Prince. Simple as that

Hes going to get paid huge given his fan base and this website subsciption. Look at the two threads on the Lotus and Mplsound. 95% of them are positive. These two records are the albums that most of us have been waiting for. He doesn't have to be nor will he be on anyones charts. He will make a ton of money from this project then go on tour and make some more. Forget Billboard and turn your volume up on the music because for the 1st time in a long long time Prince made a complete and high quality record. Now enjoy it! [Edited 3/25/09 19:53pm] Dance... Haha! I will tell you this now, and it is 100% the truth: In my slightly younger days, I used to work in clubs, as a dancer. herb4 said: Probably it's also because that every time I see a thread about a song I like, I post in it because I love it and you post in it because you hate it (and vice versa). That's the only time I see your post(s), and since we mostly disagree on what we enjoy from Prince, everything I read that you write comes off as negative. I comment on both stuff I like and dislike, I think you just take notice of the latter! herb4 said: What are your top five favorite Prince dance songs off the top of your head?
Wha? That's crazy, I dunno - Erotic City, All The Critics, Automatic, Escape, Shockadelica, my username is from LE GRIND! That kinda stuff, is that dancey enough?

I really, REALLY am liking what I'm hearing on this one. LF needs a few more spins before I can start to form a real position on it but I think this CD is almost a home run.
I think it's biggest fault is a weak opening track but, overall, this album is his most successful at capturing that 80's "solo Prince" magic. All the mistakes that marred Rave, the "High" era productions, Musicology & later are deftly side-stepped here. Tracks like Chocolate Box or Dance 4 Me immediately remind me of those fabulous 12" releases we got in the 80's. Valentina reminds me of how easy it used to be for him to write an infectious pop song like Pop Life, etc...

My Review of MPLSound
(There'll Never B) another Like Me: Not too good, though by no means terrible in and of itself. It is, however, a terrible choice for the opening track, and sounds like it should have been on Chocolate Invasion. The only song on the album that doesn't have something "great" about it, IMO. Chocolate Box: This song has a BANGIN' beat and is great for what it is: a booty-shakin' club tune. Sure, the autotune and the "I'm A Slave 4 U" panting is a bit cheesy and copycat, but hey, if it's trying to go for mass appeal, then it's gotta have that. I'm THRILLED that he added the "Disco Jellyfish" guitar solo at the end; that really makes the song for me. Dance 4 Me: "Glory, Glory, Hallelujah!" Camille is BACK in full effect! Best track of a VERY strong album. Wow...words can't explain how much I dig this song. It had me grinning, bobbing my head and even doing my funk face! THIS NEEDS TO BE A SINGLE, LIKE, YESTERDAY! Everything about this track is infectious! U're Gonna C Me: When I heard this classic ONA track was to be reworked for this album, I didn't quite know what to think. I adore the original, so coming into this one I tried to be as open-minded and unbiased as I could. I really dig the Linn on this (gives it an SOTT-type vibe), but I wish he would've kept the tempo the same and subdued the backing vox farther into the mix. I will probably skip this on future listens and swap it with the ONA version on my Zune. Here's a thought: Could someone dub a Linn into the original to see how that sounds? Here: This song stood out to me on first listen. I really dig but I can't say exactly why. The melody reminds me a bit of "Alexia de Paris," while the vocal phrasing has a bit of a "Soul Sanctuary" vibe to it... Valentina: Laid-back, sort of a Kanye/Santana hybrid in terms of vibe. Will be better live than on record, since the guitar solo is wicked! The drums sound like "Delirious" on valium, which is très cool! Better With Time: Solid ballad, nothing spectacular. Would make a good B-Side with "U’re Gonna C Me" as the A-Side. Ol' Skool Company: Slick funk from the reborn Camille. Total head-bobber, with the "funk face" on. Another sick guitar solo. Nice! No More Candy 4 U: Straight outta 1981! Instant classic...funny and fonkay! https://www.youtube.com/@PurpleKnightsPodcast

(There’ll Never B) Another Like Me - That song has grown on me
Chocolate Box - Hot beat, Like this one Dance 4 Me - The song took me to church for a minute U're Gonna C Me - Like this newer version Here - This song brings out the humble side of Prince Valentina - cute song, nice beat Better with Time - Beautiful ballad Ol’ Skool Company - By far one of the best tracks on this cd No More Candy 4 - Love the scream in the beginning, nice rock, little bit of chuck berry sound [Edited 3/25/09 22:32pm]

I just have to say, MPLSOUND is the record that Prince was suppose to make since he left WB, I mean emancipation was ok, but this album has the potential to be a real commercial success, because the sound of the album is what "Prince" is supposed to sound like in 2009.. if I look back to 1984 and I say if I could see the future this is what Prince(the man who made controversy, purple rain, 1999 etc) would sound like at 50, real talk Prince if you read these boards congrats, this was is one of those albums you were born to make!
what do you guys think? -Dolphinking23
